PLANET OF THE ULTRAVIOLETS is a mixed media short film that delves into the world of a tribe of free-spirited fluorescent people, who are attacked by an invading flock of eyeballs that feast on color. It expands on the ultraviolet world of our previous award-winning short PLASTICITY 3D.
Footage from it is also part of a multi-dimensional photo series, capturing models in UV reactive body paint with multiple cameras to create 3D lenticular images and 3D Viewmaster reels that use the body as a canvas for psychedelic art.
How are you shooting this?
The film combines actors in UV reactive body paint, light painting animation, miniature sets, and macrophotography.
Tech-wise we've shot most of this as RAW sequential stills with multiple Canon 5D’s. The effect is like stop motion, but incorporating movement and long exposures to create trails of light.
The resolution of the stills allows us to edit it in 4K and combining the images from multiple cameras creates the depth for the 3D video and lenticulars.
This film represents the culmination of visual techniques we’ve developed on our low budget 3D shorts.
How far along is it?
We’ve shot all of the live action actors and part of the special effects. We still have to shoot additional light paintings, backgrounds, have music composed for it, and drudge through many sleepless nights of editing.
Why should I fund this?
Because we are creating something unique by combining various disciplines - blacklight body paint, long exposure light paintings, stop motion animation and pixillation, and stereoscopic photography - to create a truly unique visual experience, and we need your help to make that happen.
What do I get if I fund this?
In addition to the rewards you can get with individual donations, such as custom ViewMaster reels and lenticular prints, you’ll get updates on the progress and access to backers-only clips, and the satisfaction of helping make some art!
ViewMaster reels and lenticular prints should be ready to ship in December. Blu-rays/digital downloads will be available after the festival premiere of the film.
Where does the money go?
The money will primarily go towards sound design and post-production (stereo 3D corrections, editing, animation), and printing costs (for lenticulars and ViewMaster reels). Any additional funds will be used to recoup production expenses (actor salaries, equipment rental, materials, etc).
Who's doing the music?
The soundtrack will be composed by Alex Mauer, who recently scored the feature film, Motivational Growth, and worked with us on another short film, Horn Quest.
How long will the film be?
Part of our ethos is using depth to add realism to surreal imagery. Seeing a light painting with volume is a whole different experience than seeing it as a flat 2D image. While some say mainstream interest in 3D movies is in decline, there is still plenty of potential in the medium for independent artists to explore. We know most of you will see it in 2D, so we will make it available in 2D with 2D viewing in mind too!
What are you going to do with this when it’s done?
We’ll be submitting the film to festivals and eventually posting it online for everyone to see for free. The various prints will be produced in limited quantities for backers, with any extras made available for sale.
Risks and challenges
Finishing a film is always a challenge, let alone one in 3D with complex compositing on an indie budget. But our team has a long track record for producing 3D shorts that have played at film festivals around the world.
Even if we don't reach our Kickstarter goal, we will push ahead and fund the rest ourselves, with significant delays as we won’t be able to hire as many collaborators. We're committed to seeing this project through to the end!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
