I'd just like to clarify that this project being in UK (GBP) currency does not prevent you from backing if you're outside the UK. If you're in the US, your pledge will simply be converted.
Update 6/3 - Take advantage of our SPECIAL LIMITED OFFER - Get Safelight at the £50 tier!
Update 3/3 - Lots of great questions coming in about Safelight. I'm add responses to our FAQ section so be sure to check them out.
Update 28/2 - It's been suggested that Safelight could also be used by Illustrators and Graphic Designers as well as Photographers and this is very much true. Just swap photos for illustrations or graphics and you're good to go!
As a web designer I’ve built several websites for professional photographers and each one has asked me for the same thing, a private client area that's part of their website, where they can upload their photos for review. To provide this facility I’ve built bespoke systems as any existing solution that I’ve found either didn’t meet their needs or provided a horrible user experience that dragged the rest of the site down.
I started thinking of a better solution...
Safelight is web software that you can use to sell prints and provide proofing of your work in a one-to-one environment that's controlled by you.
View our latest demo to get a taster of what Safelight can do:
The complete MVP (minimum viable product) will comprise of an admin area, where you can manage galleries and client accounts. Then there's the client area, where your client can view galleries assigned to them, order prints, and communicate with you regarding proofing.
How you use Safelight is really flexible. For example everything centres around galleries. You create a gallery, decide how you want it to behave e.g. a gallery for selling prints. You decide what print sizes you want to offer (as well as whether you want to offer digital downloads as an option) and set the price of each, then upload your images. An obfuscated URL is generated - clients.yourdomain.com/CDdbwy0kiH1q - basically a URL that is unguessable. You can then dish this URL out and people can start ordering prints. Alternatively, you can create a client account in the admin area and assign it to the gallery. The gallery is then secure and requires a username and password to access.
With the primary focus of Safelight being galleries, let's talk about some of the ways you can configure them to meet your needs.
Purchasing galleries allow the client to view and select images and progress through an order process where they can select print sizes/digital downloads and eventually enter their payment details.
This type of gallery would be ideally suited for wedding photographers. The gallery link can be passed around a family for prints to be ordered.
You're in control
We recognise that how your work is printed is very important, and Safelight gives you complete control. For this initial version of Safelight, when your client orders a set of prints you will receive an email listing the order and quantities. You can then fulfill the order however you see fit.
After Safelight has launched, the next thing we’ll be working on is automated printing. We have nothing set in stone at this stage, but ideally we want to give you options, so it's not a matter of being forced to use one printing company that we've chosen — we want you to be able to pick from a selection of print partners, or choose to handle printing and fulfillment yourself.
We also plan on giving you the option to enter the details of your preferred printer, so if you have a local printer that you use for all your work and you have an existing relationship with, you'd be able to enter their details into Safelight, and when a print order is made your preferred printer receives the order from you, through the app automatically.
Proofing galleries focus on one-to-one communication. You upload all the hi-res images and Safelight automatically handles thumbnail creation and watermarking (if you want to apply it). The client flags the images they want additional work to be done on. Revisions are created so that the progress of a images development can be reviewed with commenting also being available. When the client is happy with an image they can approve it and it becomes available for download. You can also enable print purchasing so proofing effectively becomes the first step in purchasing process.
Limited Purchasing galleries
Limited Purchasing galleries work exactly the same as purchasing galleries with the addition of being able to set a limit on how many images can be sold. You have the option of having images that have reached their limit, disappear from the gallery or appear as sold out.
This type of gallery would be ideally suited for photographers offering exclusive shots to newspapers/magazines (setting a limit of 1) as well as photographers, illustrators and graphic designers who want to offer limited runs of their work.
We want to provide an outstanding user experience with Safelight. We want someone to be able to hand their Grandmother an iPad and all she has to do is swipe and tap to select the images she wants a copy of. For this reason the app will be fully responsive and optimised for whatever platform it is viewed on (desktop/tablet/smartphone etc). In addition the interface and the images you upload will be displayed at retina quality so your work is always looking at it’s best.
Rick Nunn - Photographer

So a bit about Rick:
Rick has been a graphic designer for over a decade and a photographer for half a decade. He fell in love with photography as soon as he picked up his first camera and soon realised that he loved taking photos of people over anything else.
"To me the value of these projects is completely inherent in the act of doing them or, more importantly, the act of completing them at a level with which I am happy — to prove to myself that I can."
Publishing his projects online has lead to clients approaching him for photography work, such as independent street-wear brands such as AnyForty, Growl & Grandeur and Vapour Clothing.
What’s the money for?
Building Safelight requires a lot of design and development effort as well as establishing the official branding for the software. This is all stuff we want to get right from the start. We’ve already spent a chunk of time on the interface design and order/proofing processes and now we’re down to the nitty gritty of building a minimum viable product that we’re aiming to ship by September this year (2013). The more we raise the sooner we can start work on our future plans beyond the MVP, and the sooner you get your hands on additional features!
A rough breakdown of how the money is going to be divided up would be:
- 10% Kickstarter fees
- 5 - 10% Rewards
- 15% Branding
- 15% Design
- 20% Front-End Development
- 35% Back-End Development
What am I getting?
You will receive a completely unrestricted copy of Safelight to install on your own web server, with free upgrades for 12 months after we release the first version.
After the project has been successfully funded and built, Safelight will be sold for £149 on a per-domain basis as software to install on web servers.

When can I access the beta?
Upon reaching our Kickstarter goal we'll gather your personal details, email address etc to create your user accounts and send you details of how to access the beta when the time comes. We're aiming to have the beta version of Safelight available by July 2013. The beta will be hosted on our servers during the testing phase.
Our future plans...
The result of this Kickstarter project will be a self-contained piece of software that you can upload to your personal web hosting and use. We also want Safelight to be accessible to as many people as possible so we intend to take that same piece of software and provide it as a hosted service. This will be beneficial to people who don’t want to worry about installing Safelight themselves and just want to use it. So there will be two options, a self-hosted version (this project) and a hosted version.
Beyond the MVP we want Safelight to integrate with printing companies, so that the order process for prints is an automated one for you and the client. The client places an order, you receive the payment, the order goes straight off to the printers and they handle delivery straight to the clients door.
We'll be adding iIntegration with Adobe Lightroom of course!
We plan on providing plugins to integrate Safelight with popular CMSs like Wordpress, Squarespace etc.
Instagram is a massively popular service for professional and amateur photographers alike. We have plans to integrate the Instagram API to populate a Safelight purchasing gallery. Sell your Instagram photos with just a few clicks!
We have tons of ideas. Safelight has huge potential and there are many avenues to explore but most importantly we’ll be listening to the community - that's you guys! Share your ideas with us, ask for features, if Safelight doesn’t meet your particular needs tell us why.
The more feedback we receive for Safelight the more we can make it better for you, and the more we raise on this Kickstarter project the quicker we can start introducing these great future plans.
Ashley Baxter is a fantastic photographer specialising in natural light, portrait photography. She's also a big supporter of Safelight and has contributed invaluable input into it's development. Enjoy!
Rick Nunn is well known for is location strobist photography and inspirational personal projects. He works with client like AnyForty, Growl & Grandeur and Vapour and of course, he's the chap providing the beautiful print rewards for Safelight. Enjoy!
Risks and challenges
As with any web-based project there are potential obstacles than can cause delays and delays are the only real risk with this project.
I'm working with a company called Decode (http://decode.uk.com) who are focusing on the back-end development of the software while I focus on the design and front-end development. Decode are the very best at what they do and collectively we know how to build and deliver Safelight as a product.
We've very carefully decided on our funding goal to ensure that Safelight can be built within it. So backers, please rest assured that if we meet our target Safelight will be built.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
