About

Like many Americans, we quickly became caught up in a media frenzy over what really happened during an encounter at the Lincoln Memorial between some high school boys wearing Make America Great hats and adult activists.    For us, it hit close to home.  Our office is in Covington, Kentucky, about three miles from Covington Catholic High School.        Steve created an award-winning documentary for Covington's Bicentennial; he mentors high school student leaders and he teaches young journalists in the Communication Dept. of Thomas More University.

As we watched the rush to judgment play out, producer Ryan Anderson and I immediately knew we had to make a documentary about this strange encounter.  I started shooting right away that Monday morning after that fateful weekend in January.  Since then, Ryan and I have spent countless hours watching videos, pouring over posts on social media, and interviewing people involved, journalists and educators from around the country.

Our goal is to examine the coverage and mob mentality online, and to look at the current state of a deeply divided America that created a perfect storm out of a viral video and photograph that quickly spread all over the world.

Ultimately, we want to get people talking - in a civil discourse - about some important and unresolved issues raised by this story.   We are committed to helping students, journalists, content producers and consumers learn from the encounter. We also hope our work helps to prevent future cases of media mayhem and hate.

Risks and challenges

We feel confident about our approach, interviews and footage. We could really use the additional funds to pay for some first-class graphics and post-production. We don't think we are facing any risks or challenges we can't overcome.
