RUN FOR YOUR LIFE, THE SERIES
Run for Your Life is a web series (2-3 min episodes) about internet dates gone wrong, at which point the main character literally runs for their life!
Most everyone at some point in their life experiences the PAIN of dating which usually turns into the COMEDY of dating. With the onslaught of dating and hookup sites there is more accessibility, more "togetherness," but also more noise, more work and EVEN MORE STORIES. Ultimately, Run for Your Life is a FICTION show inspired by modern love.
We (the writing team) have 10 episodes written and plan to start by making 4 of them: 1) Granny Oil 2) The Freelance CEO 3) The Mortician 4) The Narcissist. We need your help to get this series off the ground!
SEASON 1 features Celine and Richard. CELINE (33) tries really hard to be nice, but just isn't. RICHARD (38) is ready to be in "conscious communication." Celine and Richard literally cross paths running for their life....until one day.....
Ep. 1: GRANNY OIL: Celine meets Paul (38) a new age dude who she quickly discovers keeps older ladies company under the guise of “just sharing his homemade homeopathic oils.”
Ep. 2: CEO: Richard meets Amanda (39) a “freelance CEO” who once bought a mule for $15K and keeps calling Richard “son.” When Richard tries to lighten the mood, she ultimately calls him sexist.
Ep 3: HAIR GUY: Celine meets Dave (33) a sweet, sexy guy with an unfortunate, uncontrollable hair fetish. Celine tries to empathize but Dave quickly gets defensive, “Would it be weird if I were a leg guy?”
Ep. 4: NARCISSIST: Richard meets Nancy (32) an earthy, beautiful massage therapist/narcissist who won’t stop talking about herself and her co-worker’s boyfriend who she clearly has a crush on.
Each season of Run for Your Life will feature two other main characters in different situations and possibly in different towns....but always running for their life. This will give us the opportunity to explore the wide range of people and places where internet dates can go wrong.
$50 incentive: Run for Your Life specially designed "Fuck Strangers" pin: inspired by the love/hate relationship so many of us have with online dating and hookup culture.
$80 incentive: Private Frame Drum Class No prior musical experience is needed to learn!
$100 incentive: an Animated Run for Your Life Flip Book. It will be like this, but not a cat.
$250 incentive: Run for Your Life Handwritten Zine containing candid stories and research about online dating experiences.
WHY WE NEED $20,000??
We need $20,000 because that's how much it costs to make!
Here's the budget breakdown for FOUR EPISODES:
- Pre-production $4K: casting, production/costume design, camera prep, location scouting, logistics, insurance
- Production $11K: 4 days of camera, lighting, sound, art, hair make-up, actors, transportation, media management, location cost, rentals, meals.
- Post-production $5K: video editing, sound mixing and design, original music (or music licensing), color correction
Our goal with Run for Your Life is to become a highly popular, funny, yet smart inside look on the difficulty of miscommunication with stranger/dates and modern love over all. We want people to gain insight into their love lives and to laugh about it at the same time. We plan to get there in a couple of ways:
FIND SPONSORSHIP: The most effective way for web series to be financially sustainable is to find a sponsor. Once we complete the episodes and prove concept, we will shop the series around to fashion/shoe companies. The show Miss Adventure is a good example of a sponsored show.
FIND THE RIGHT DIGITAL PLATFORMS: We already have connections with some hot platforms....now all we need to do is make it! Also, having the right sponsor can help us land the right platform.
COLLECT RUN FOR YOUR LIFE STORIES: Eventually we will ask our audiences to submit their story to be used as possible inspiration for an episode. Chosen episodes will win award money. This will create a sense of community and competition that, we hope, spreads the popularity of the series.
MARTHA WILLIAMS (CREATOR, WRITER, DIRECTOR, EXEC. PRODUCER) Martha comes from a ridiculously "diverse" background that gives her the creative juice of a mac truck. Preacher's kid, too tall girl forced into basketball submission, saleslady, life coach, sustainability activist, valet car parker...you get the picture. She's been making art since 2003. First as a choreographer and since 2007 as a writer/director for video. Her work has been widely in the US and on screens internationally. For the past 3 years, she acted as the Creative Director for video at NeuroLeadership Institute, making more than 40 videos with her team. She's also the founder of the BugHouse SPIN, the precursor to BugHouse Media. The SPIN was a NYC based live storytelling show that started 2013 in Bushwick and ended at the KGB bar in 2015. Her passion is hearing people's stories, uncovering the unsaid and her very short dog Franklin. You can see her work at MarthaWilliams.info and BugHouseMedia.com.
ASHLEY GEORGE (PRODUCER) Ashley is a director and producer based in New York. Her work has exhibited at festivals and theaters such as Picture Farm Film Festival, GLITCH Film Festival, New York No Limits' Queer Film Initiative, Bideodromo Experimental Film Festival, MIX NYC Experimental Queer Festival, National Queer Arts Festival, Santa Cruz Film Festival, and San Francisco's Roxie Theater and Castro Theater. She's a Gemini firecracker in a sugar bowl and is a sucker for all things 90s. You can see her work at filmsbyashley.com.
RACHEL WERBEL (WRITER) Ms. Werbel/We is from the woodsy suburbs of beautiful disreputable New Jersey. Rachel/Rahel dreamed of living a solar-paneled outdoors life but surprised herself and everyone else by moving to NYC. After years of table-waiting, odd-jobs and doing the “improv comedy thing” Ms. Werbel/We has developed a hopeful cynicism that lends itself to making smoothies, skimming the New York Times, reading self-help as well as writing, directing, shooting and edit-ing little shorts about nothing as often as possible.
JEF TAYLOR (CONTRIBUTING WRITER) Jef Taylor is a Brooklyn-based filmmaker whose work has screened at festivals worldwide; including Sundance, the Independent Film Festival of Boston, Nashville, Guanejuato, HollyShorts, and Sao Paulo. He received the award for Outstanding Achievement in Directing at VisionFest NY for his short film COVERAGE, and was named Best Editor as a graduate student at the Savannah College of Art and Design. His film After You Left screened as an Official Selection at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and was named Best Dramatic Short at the Detroit Windsor International Film Festival. Most recently, Jef released the first season of ADULTS - an original series he wrote, directed, edited, and acted in.
LUCKY CHENG (DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY) Lucky Cheng is a filmmaker and cinematographer from New York. When he’s not out exploring the world you’ll find him behind the camera across narrative, documentary, fashion, music video, and branded content work. He seeks silver moments in the mundane, and likes brass objects and long walks on the beach.
SARAH COGAN (PRODUCTION DESIGNER) Sarah Cogan is a triple threat costume, production and lighting designer. Sarah has been nominated for Best Design by the International Academy of Web Television. Some highlights of her career include assist designing on The Slap (NBC), American Genius (Nat Geo), Last Week Tonight (HBO) and Kevin Can Wait (CBS). Sarah approaches her work from a place of seeking understanding of the human experience and how it relates to the situations within each story.
GRACEANN DORSE (ASSOCIATE PRODUCER) Graceann Dorse is an actor, writer, and producer who is getting the cat in this photo taxidermied. He passed away unexpectedly in January. He was, and still is, the best cat that ever lived. His name is Beeker. You can find out more about Graceann at GraceannDorse.com.
SOME OF US:
Risks and challenges
The risk in completing this project is that we are working with a very low budget with not much wiggle room. The good news is we are working with a producer who has put many of these things together and is a budget wizard.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
