This is what happened. This is how it feels.
This is a record of heartbreak in a hotel parking lot.
My name is Abby, and I am a Brooklyn based songwriter, singer, and multi-instrumentalist who records and performs under the name Ruby Rae.
True Crime is the most personal album I’ve ever written.
Somehow these songs that feel so specific to my situation, have evoked the biggest response from those who have heard them. Heartbreak and the humor that gets us through, are so universal.
In order to successfully tell this story, I've teamed up with a super-talented producer / multi-instrumentalist Lawson White, and an awesome Brooklyn based record label (Good Child Music) to capture these songs and share them with the world. Lawson and I have already been working in the studio to develop songs and record what will be the foundation for this album. We're currently moving from pre-production into production mode.
I want to continue to make the best and most beautiful records I can, and creating music from scratch with this kind of impeccable production level is expensive. AND I've found it's much more exciting to connect with my community throughout the process than wait til the release. So that's why I've previously partnered with Pledgemusic, and now Kickstarter to help fund this project, share progress, and make this the best Ruby Rae record yet!
This will be the sixth Ruby Rae record to be released (third full length). For the past eight years, I've been writing, producing, and releasing music independently in Brooklyn with an awesome team of collaborators and musicians.
The all-or-nothing funding for the new record will go towards the following:
- Part of the remaining production costs: studio time / mixing / mastering
- Album related merchandise
- Miscellaneous costs related to the record (artwork, press, etc.)
Thank you for your time. I'm really excited to get started and share what we've been working on. Please consider pledging; you'll get to go behind the scenes, cool rewards, and together we can create some new music!!

Risks and challenges
What if production takes longer than expected?
By setting the delivery date in late 2019/early 2020, I think there is an adequate buffer to deliver on time!
What if recording is more expensive than expected? (more songs, more personnel needed, additional studio rental, etc.)
I've built a well-rounded financial plan for funding "True Crime" to accommodate for any unexpected expenses. I can assure you that any additional costs will not affect the quality or timeline of when the rewards will be delivered.
What if the vinyl or other rewards take longer than expected?
As I mentioned above, I've built out this timeline to accommodate for potential delays in the various steps of production and distribution of rewards (with the hopes that all rewards will be delivered well before the deadline). I'm confident in delivering all rewards by early 2020 - that being said, I will update all of those who donate if there is any delay.
What if this project is not successful?
I've previously raised over $3k in 2012 for a debut album on Pledgemusic (released album later that year), and over $11k in Fall of 2015 for The Uncanny (released album in July 2016). This all or nothing goal and timeline seems very reasonable to me when considering past successful projects, and where we are right now in the process.
