My Seventh Update

Hi all, Scott here.

The Meetings with the Manufacturers at Gen Con

Because people asked - Gen Con went very well for Palladium on a number of fronts. With regard to RRT Wave 2, we spoke with representatives of several manufacturers and reviewed samples of their work. We are now awaiting refined quotes as we were able to discuss what we want to accomplish with Wave Two. That included confirming with them the level of detail that we are seeking to preserve while reducing part counts.

All in all, the meetings went very well and hopefully we will be making a selection on a manufacturer to move forward with very soon.

The SDF-1 Deck Bases

Thank you to everyone who made constructive comments on the bases. To answer the most cited comment, the digital renders don’t convey it very well, but the thickness of the SDF-1 bases will be comparable to the thickness of the previous RRT bases.

In regard to the bases being too generic looking and making them more "SDF-1 like”, the challenge is that the SDF-1 deck does not have any easily identifiable or signature aesthetic or mechanical cut-lines. For a Valkyrie base or even a massive Monster II base, there is just nothing that we found which would clearly indicate that either unit was standing on the SDF-1 deck. Unfortunately, when reviewing the original SDF-1 there aren't any small UEDF symbols or small patterns that scream SDF-1 deck. We could come up with some details if that is the consensus among the backers, but even so, it won't doesn't automatically equate to being on the deck of the SDF-1.

For the SDF-1 bases, Palladium wants to provide a different style of base for those who desire a mechanical ship hull/deck-like texture that could easily be found anywhere on the SDF-1. This pattern is equally suitable for use on the deck of the Prometheus, Daedalus ARMD carrier, Robotech Factory, space station or battle ship.

If you have any specific, constructive and detailed suggestions on how you think we can capture a more “accurate” SDF-1 deck depiction, please send them in for our consideration. Your input is always appreciated. (So that you don’t have to go back to the previous Update to reference them I am putting the renders here again.)

You know, I can insert a few scraps of things into tables in Excel, use a few "Rand" statements and I can make an "update" generator!
What is really making me afraid is a part of me is serious.
I was a fan of the "BOFH excuse generator"
      http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ballard/bofh/bofhserver.pl
No reason why PB does not have one?
They want their fan-friends to donate everything else, why not this?
They could save themselves a wage... eh, oh, nevermind.

      Let's see how much of the next one I can guess;

      "My Eighth Update

      Hi all, Scott here.

It has been a busy couple of weeks, so let's cut right to the chase.

Manufacturer's Quotes: Still a work in progress! We know you guys are aching to hear something new on this front, but after all the years of waiting we can't risk picking the wrong team for the job. We appreciate that nobody wants to hear excuses about parts counts or delays, but the reality is that this project won't get wrapped up successfully if we rush into things and waste money, time, and other resources. Clocks are ticking, but surely those of you who have waited 4 years for the MAC-II and FPA deserve to have time taken to do those pieces justice?

      We certainly think so.

We've talked to X manufacturers, and have a few highly promising conference calls lined up for next week. We hope that *insert natural disaster here* won't interfere, and that everyone out there is safe during what is shaping up to be a rather rough couple of months around the world.

Take care and we'll check back in 2 weeks!"

Maybe there'll be a preview image of something, which is nice, though parceling out little morsels a bit at a time isn't building much faith that they're doing anything but trying to buy time.

    4. Talizvar on September 25

Some serious creative writing I see being done today.
Maybe some synonym lookup being done if concerned about copy/paste.
This next "update" being the final certainty that what Scott has to say is no different than those before him. I can be so negative "I like it" when proven wrong, because it means something good happened.

Sad really, this face of integrity that was being offered: was it not there to begin with or lost in the weeks during employment with Palladium Books?
More expressing an interest "out loud" than anything else.

Well, if Scott is paid and not a pro-bono "fan-friend" I can at least be pleased his employment will help drain their coffers all the faster. Singing for one's supper here must be rather unfulfilling.

To all others who take the time to post it is a mixed feeling: you care enough to complain, but Palladium Books is really not worth anyone's attention. "Fun" to read your comments all the same.

@Scott You're really going to have to pull something out of the hat for this week's "update", which by me reckoning will be #10, not #8, as your regular "communications" have generated enough antipathy it's almost like they've been written by Kevayne.

I think producing one-piece minis in a bones-like material would be the best option, but I do not want to inflict these PB fools on Reaper. Because not only would PB continue to drag down this KS, but they would negatively influence Reaper's as well.

    14. Jeff K. on September 15

Palladium should definitely talk to Reaper, maybe they would learn a few things about how to run a company. On the one hand, PB alienated a large number of people to the point they won't buy any PB product, and actively tell others not to buy PB products. On the other hand, Reaper has a loyal fanbase that just gave them another 3 million dollars to make figures. Sure Reaper has had issues with their KS, things running late and sculpts not being what fans wanted, but Reaper took their lumps and moved on and has maintained their fanbase loyalty, where PB has ignored their fans or thrown them under the bus along with anyone else they can find to blame.

    21. Matthew S. Tomczak on September 14

Scott - this statement bothers me: "For the SDF-1 bases, Palladium wants to provide a different style of base for those who desire a mechanical ship hull/deck-like texture that could easily be found anywhere on the SDF-1. This pattern is equally suitable for use on the deck of the Prometheus, Daedalus ARMD carrier, Robotech Factory, space station or battle ship." when included with the following: "Unfortunately, when reviewing the original SDF-1 there aren't any small UEDF symbols or small patterns that scream SDF-1 deck."

If there isn't enough reference material to enable the bases to conform to a theme, in this case the SDF-1 Macross, then you either should make them a generic starship base. If you call it something, like the SDF-1 Macross, it is setting an expectation that you're just gonna get hammered for.

Speaking of hammered: "With regard to RRT Wave 2, we spoke with representatives of several manufacturers and reviewed samples of their work.

We've been hearing this song and dance for the past few years now. This statement is falling on deaf ears. We do not want to hear that Palladium, and now you because you are their business manager, have had several conversations with manufacturers. We do not want to hear the reduced part count discussion, as that was something that should have been addressed prior to production. We want results, not the same excuse that Kevin/Wayne keep peddling.

I'm with a number of people around here, I will not support another Palladium Books kickstarter, or partnership, until this is resolved.

I'll say it again - I'm very frustrated with the content of these "updates." I can direct you to comments by Marek Wiernikowski, Talizvar, and many others for my overall sentiments.

And while I don't begrudge the contents of your closing thoughts, they still ring superfluous and tone-deaf given the continued lack of substance in the rest of the "update." (It's difficult to take words of concern seriously when there appears to be a sincere lack of the stuff when it comes to this project, or at least leveling with your backers on what's actually going on...)

I appreciate that you addressed the "SDF-ness" comment on the bases. I'm generally fine with generic, since these aren't the focus point, but they still look sloppy for what they could be. These have a uniform recess depth and no convincing layering that would denote hatches/panels and functional greeblies. The second link Jeremey Gragg provided at least has some repeating features whose styles could be mirrored on one of your bases: https://i.pinimg.com/564x/3f/5d/b1/3f5db1838864d5f932c910a634231519.jpg

So again, where's the relief? Where's the attention to detail that says these are more than just lines scribed into a disk? Take a look at this: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1238621915/space-station-terrain-project-thats-no-moon

      Or this: http://dragonforge.com/for%20sale%20images/dforge%20items%20for%20sale/Gaming%20bases/tech%20deck/25mm%20round%20tech%202.jpg

I get it - there aren't mesh grates on the SDF-1 hull, but these at least aren't a uniform disk with lines drawn in. I belabor the point...

And I continue to have concern about their durability (and that dumbbell thing...)

That's a lot to write on one *relatively* insignificant piece. Does it show I care, or just that I'm crazy?...

That said, if you really are interested in feedback, then golly-gee it'd be great to see some of those other non-insignificant items that you guys have cued/queued up for production "soon" in the ever elusive "near" future. If the bases appear to be an afterthought in quality, I groan to think what the other minis look like.

Bottom line (again): we don't want more words, we want to SEE results on the most important and substantial portions of this project. What about that is so hard to grasp?

And since this is probably just a therapy session, yes I want a refund, even though I have no delusion about the probability of that happening. But I still want a refund.

And-and I continue to have zero desire to support Palladium in the future. The hole you've collectively dug is quite deep.

And-and-and those comments of a group claim for failure to produce? Very intriguing and worth looking into...

      In summary, please try again.

@ David Holley. Don't forget, PB has to pay taxes for the full retail value of the 10,000+ starter sets and other expansions they over purchased that's rotting in the warehouse, so 4 years of taxes is eating into that remainder as well.

Hey, here's a question: have you folks considered having the minis made out of the Bones material Reaper used for their CAV game? The stuff seems to work well enough, and the Chinese firm whom does the work seems to be able to do it in a reasonable amount of time. I only ask as in the time this KS has been spinning their wheels, Reaper has popped out no less than three Kickstarters (Bones 2, 3 and the CAV have finished, and Bones 4 has started on the post-fund-raising phase) with far larger model counts. The Bones CAV suits are well-detailed, and paint up well. Just a thought.

Scott, afraid to say the new guy honeymoon is over.

I would agree you have not contributed anything further than what was achieved six months ago which is still nothing.

I will have to say these "updates" are just a different structure of the same thing: excuses.

You could go into wonderful detail of what criteria would lead to an accepted quote for starters.
Make it public so they do not "waste their time."

The bases are really a distraction, constructive criticism of a disk with grooves in it?
Since you seem to be glossing over feedback I might as well throw mine into the wind:
      - No raised surfaces, a model pose could be anywhere so for added utility keep it flat and if you want anything raised add extra glue-on items for interesting detail.
      - Try to keep the patterns generic since they have a definite facing it would be easy to see the repeat pattern of them... stick-on bits will help to mitigate that.
      - For deck detail, maybe a quick look at the various models of the SDF-1 "for inspiration"?
This might be a good start: https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5106/5548239851_6a8c5cda38_b.jpg

Anyway, see? Willing to give the benefit of the doubt even though every indication and many backers would say I am wasting my time.

I shall now switch over to my litany that Palladium Books has stolen my money, with a ship date of December 2013 and we are now September 2017 and NO REFUNDS but no alternative ship date given and well over a year of "getting quotes".

I have no objective evidence you are "working on it" so I suspect you are liars as well since looking back many items were listed as done and are now being worked on so much explaining is not being offered.

As much as I would like a refund, what with other great KS projects, Star Wars Leigon and Fallout mini games launching soon, I'd rather get what I paid for here. I'm sure I'll get around to assembling and painting them sometime within 10 years of receiving them. I would like to have not yet reached my 50s though...

    43. Marek Wiernikowski on September 13

I repeat: Bases as shown will warp and snap. Especially the 50mm one. Could be done in HIPS / ABS. Cannot be done in resin.

Congratulations are also in order on actually moving backward in terms of any reasonable production process. As a business manager, you're certainly doing a stand up job. No, wait, you're not. You're by all appearances a Kevin sock puppet.

If you continue to rile the backer base, the group of backers thinking about suing may finally decide to get organised enough to pool funds and start a group claim against PB. (Facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/510264239170789/ ) Right now it's been mostly just venting, but continuing shit like this update, or other blatant attempts to shill on product, like the Rifts Board Game will eventually stir folks from the apathy that's been PB's only defence - and someone will know someone who's brother is a lawyer, and then someone else who's publicly known in the community will act as escrow to fund things.

I personally am very close to the point where I'll actively start looking to do this.

There is no way under Michigan law that PB can win a 'good faith' argument in the work that has been done.

It is highly unlikely that PB have the required funds to produce work to the required standard to win a 'good faith' argument in terms of producing and shipping Wave 2. I actually don't think PB have the funds to do so at all, never mind to the required industry standards.

In 2020, Harmony Gold's license with Tatsunoko expires. Tatsunoko no longer have the rights to the 40-odd original character and mech designs from SDF:Macross, no do they have the rights to merchandising or derivative works based on the series. Tatsunoko ONLY have the rights to the physical animation (ie distribution of the series). As such they will not be able to reissue the licence to HG. Big West / Studio Nue (the IP owners for the story, designs and derivative works of SDF:Macross) primarily license to japanese firms (Arcadia, Bandai) and are quite protective of the quality of their brand. It's extremely unlikely that they would be willing to licence HG for derivative works or merchandising. As such, at that point, Robotech, as a franchise, is very likely to die.

Once that time runs out, PB will be unable to fulfill their obligations as part of this kickstarter and will have to refund under the agreement with backers.

So, you're on the clock. Tick tick, more than half way there since the project started.

So, you're on the clock. Tick tick, more than half way there since the project started.

      Final thoughts:
The weather has nothing to do with this project or its fulfilment. Sort your shit out. These little Kev-ism 'thoughts and prayers' at the end of an update are not just irritating, they're downright insulting. We're not here as religious cultists, we're awaiting information (still, after 3 years of bugger all) about a project we put a lot of money into.

Scott, nobody cares about the scenic (ha) bases that you're unlikely to ever produce at this rate. The only info you should be discussing with backers is actual, tangible progress, of which there has been none since you joined this project (feel free to prove me wrong). Alleged discussions with supposed manufacturers don't mean much anymore, we've been fed that line for too long to believe it much anyway.

Well I'm now back to my original thoughts of PB, since it seems unlikely they will ever refund. Either deliver wave 2 or go bankrupt, I don't care which.
