What we do: R. Riveter makes handbags. But as simple as that statement seems we’ve committed ourselves to a larger mission by empowering military spouses, reclaiming old military materials that are rich with history, and ensuring American Handmade is alive and well.
Our Team: Our team is made up of military spouses, Riveters, stationed throughout the country in places like Dahlonega, GA, Fort Bragg, NC, Fort Drum, NY and several more. We provide mobile employment as Riveters deconstruct old military tents and uniforms and begin the transformation into something new—an R. Riveter handbag.
Our philosophy: A handbag is a personal thing. Whether a simple clutch for an evening out or tote for weekend adventures, we carry the things we treasure with us as we go. Why not treasure the bag as well? Treasure the fact that each bag has a history and story. A story that is told through the handbag that was once a soldier’s shelter, or the personalized stamp of the Riveter who cut, dyed, and sewed each component. It is this story that we value most at R. Riveter—this and the knowledge that our bags are constant and practical reminders of what we stand for.
- Our method: Our model is unique in that we only have a centralized facility for final construction of our products. Staying true to our mission, we’ve enabled Riveters to work from wherever the military deems necessary by drop shipping raw materials to their door. They complete bag components based on our designs. They are then shipped to our shop outside Fort Bragg, NC for final assembly and inspection. We outsource virtually nothing. Military spouses design the bag, prepare the raw materials, and place every cut, stitch, and logo by hand.
What we need: A larger space and more equipment.
R. Riveter is currently producing and selling our one of a kind bags, but we’re outgrowing our means. We need more space and equipment to meet demand, but we need to make and sell more bags to afford the space and equipment—a classic catch 22. We use two commercial grade sewing machines both built during the Korean War…yes, the 1950’s. Additionally, though we’ve upgraded from the garage that got us off the ground, our 600 square foot facility we just moved into is going to be tight this Christmas season. We need you, the Kickstarter community to help us reach our goals. Our target of $35,000 will go directly to these costs. Any incremental funding after this will help us spread the word through marketing and provide us the ability to hire more Riveters to get the job done right.
In return for your generosity and support of our new line, the Reveille series, the gifts will be sent directly to your door when our campaign successfully closes!
Orders going to military members and spouses of military members: Any Order sent to a military base (or APO) or a military spouse will receive a hand written thank you for their service to our country and an extra gift from R. Riveter! (Information about military affiliation gathered in survey at the completion of the Kickstarter)

First things first, our mission.
We make handbags to employ military spouses, not the other way around. Our products are one-of-a-kind, and we stand by them 100%—but in today’s world that’s not a competitive advantage, it’s an expectation. Our mission and uncompromising adherence to the values from which R. Riveter was born create a company that is worth more than the sum of its components. Our Riveters are proud of who they are and what they do.

Risks and challenges
Risks and Challenges
We have successfully been designing and manufacturing handbags for the past three years; therefore we have trials and tribulations of becoming a proficient manufacturing of handbags behind us. During that time we have not taken a dime of debt or financing. In order to grow to our true potential we need the kickstarter community. Our business model will finally come together when we can bring more Riveters to full time positions. Bringing our business model to a much larger community will bring uncertainties. We will always be transparent with our community about challenges, including these:
Ship date: We have built in extra time for the manufacturing process and are confident we will ship by the projected dates, but there is always a chance that things will take longer than planned.
Product changes: As we refine the Reveille line from additional community feedback and more product testing, slight changes may be made. We'll only make changes that enhance the product functionality and aesthetic.
Suppliers: We have well-established sources for military materials and have the inventory already sourced. Our leather supplier is intended for large-scale production. The liner fabric and hardware are also sourced from well-established and credible suppliers that we have been working with for since our inception in 2011.
Large Demand- We don’t outsource anything, so every stitch that is sewn will be at the hands of our team members. Part of meeting our Kickstarter demand will include a well laid out growth plan for equipment purchasing and bringing on more Riveter team members. There is no question of being able to fulfill a kickstarter promise. The very things we are asking from the kickstarter community will help us to more efficiently produce our reveille line.
Variation in product - With a product that comes from so many different makers in many different locations, there will be a slight variation from handbag to handbag. Actual colors on the handbag may be slightly different from what you see on your computer monitor, smart phone, any device that you may be using to browse our website.
Each R. Riveter bag is truly one of a kind—no two will be exactly alike. The canvas that we use was once used by a soldier as a tent; we up-cycle the material by hand cutting, dying, pressing and eventually sewing into our products. We also use other items that were used in in the our Nation’s military, such as, blankets and uniforms. We have a strict guideline for assessing what materials can be made into bag. We embrace the character and individuality of the materials while still maintaining consistency and quality in our products.
Shipping and order fulfillment- We will be in constant contact with our backers throughout the kickstarter project.
