The goal of this campaign is to fund a print run of Common Ground, a 30-illustration hardcover 8.5"x11" book. Appropriate for children of most ages, the story also has an important and timely message for both kids and adults.
Frontier Fantasy is the setting for the artwork I produce outside of my regular illustration work. It is an American West that might have been, taking place in the equivalent of the 1800-1850 time period. In Frontier Fantasy, there is no true history woven into the fiction. There are no real countries, figures, events, religion or myths. This is the a mythology separate from the truth as we know it, where fantastical beasts, animals and humans have a unique relationship in a vast landscape.
Common Ground is the first completed Frontier Fantasy story. It is a story of discovery, friendship and the ability of younger generations to break away from the prejudices of the old. I released Common Ground as an album on my Facebook page in December 2016, where it garnered a lot of attention and many inquiries about a printed version. Well, now it's here!
This hardcover book contains 30 original illustrations, painted with India Ink and touches of white chalk and gouache on toned paper. This is a story told mostly in pictures; the only text is at the beginning and the end of the story. In this printed version, I have also included an extra page which gives a little more background information about Frontier Fantasy. You can see the original Facebook album here if you wish to see the whole story, or you can enjoy the limited preview below.
To accompany the published hardcover book, I have created an Audiobook version of Common Ground exclusively for this Kickstarter campaign. The limited text in Common Ground is narrated, and I have compiled music and sound effects to complete the experience. Play the audio and look through your digital or hardcover copy, turning the page every time your hear a morning dove's call. See the preview below:
Kickstarter is allowing me to deliver you the best product possible for the lowest cost to you. With your help, I will be able to purchase a large number of copies of Common Ground. That means I can afford a hardcover book with heavyweight paper and provide you with something in which I take pride.
I began my career doing editorial illustrations for magazines, but soon found that my realistic oil paintings were a better fit for the gaming and literary world. I started doing spot illustrations for the role-playing game Metal, Magic & Lore, where I developed the portfolio that led me to Wizards of the Coast and their trading card game, Magic: The Gathering.
I have now been illustrating for Magic: The Gathering for eight years, and my work has been featured in the Society of Illustrators Annual, the Art Renewal Center International Salon and Spectrum: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art.
Common Ground is my first book, and my first project using ink rather than oil paints. I live with my wife, my 3-year old son, 6-month old daughter, and two cats.
Risks and challenges
I have already completed the illustrations for Common Ground, and I have designed the interior pages and the cover. The only steps left are to submit the files and get them printed. After I submit the files, I will receive a printed proof of the book in around two weeks. If everything looks great, I will have the books in an additional 3 weeks. Then I will pack and ship the books to your door.
There is always a chance that the proof is sub-par or the printer encounters a problem, which is why there are conservative delivery dates on the hardcopy rewards. Rest assured, I will only approve the book if I'm pleased with it and will work with the printer to get the best possible product. If delays occur, I will communicate them with you promptly.
