Moon is an ethereal and enchanting original comic story about childhood, curiosity and love. I came up with the idea from one of many conversations with my partner's four-year-old son when we saw a large disc inside a storage container on a building site and he told me it looked like the moon. You'll find out more when your copy arrives!
The specs:If successfully funded, Moon will be printed as a 24-page, full-colour mini-tabloid newspaper comic (160x280 mm), in a limited run of 200 copies, staple bound. The mini-tabloid newspapers are printed through Glasgow-based The Newspaper Club, printed on 55gsm newsprint - for that tactile and ephemeral feel of a newspaper, and to print it at a bigger size to my usual work (A5/148x210mm) so that both big and small readers can be totally absorbed in the story.
Why Kickstarter?: Two years ago I successfully funded the printing costs of Njalla, my 48-page comic about the Sami and the northern lights. Having this project fully funded gave me the freedom to create exactly what I wanted without being restricted by the printing costs. Sadly, I'm not in the position to be able to fund my own work independently, so for that, I need your help.
So, what does it have to do with you? By pledging to support this project, you’ll be buying a comic you think looks pretty interesting, in advance. But for me, this removes the financial burden of self-funding, meaning I can make this story for you. If Moon is unable to reach the target, it sadly will be unable to be made.
Who are you?
Well, I'm Rozi. I'm a comics creator, illustrator and zine maker, and I’ve been writing and self-publishing comics since 2014. Comics I've released include The Red Road, Ø, Cosmos & Other Stories, and the 2016 Kickstarter-funded Njálla. I’ve also published comics-zine Sneaky Business and the Down to your Skivvies zine, as well as being included in anthologies such as Dirty Rotten Comics (#5, 8 &10), the Broken Frontier Small Press Yearbook (2016, 2017) and BBE Collective’s Habitat and the upcoming Barriers. In 2017 I was featured as one of 100 contemporary female cartoonists in London’s The Inking Woman exhibition, hosted at The Cartoon Museum. The exhibition has since been released in book form published by Myriad Editions.
By day, I’m a project manager and graphic designer for a copywriting agency here in Bournemouth. When I'm not working or drawing, you can find me hanging out with my little family, learning to skateboard, reading, or going into the sea.
All rewards are as low-cost as possible to make it worthwhile for you lovely folks. As a pledger, you will receive exclusive updates before anyone else on the progress of the comic, and previews of some of the pages as they reach completion. Aside from the comic itself, there are also some fancy new limited edition rewards.
The collection: For a discounted price, you can get the collection of all three titles I've self-published in one easy package; Njálla, Ø and Cosmos & Other Stories. Priced separately at a total price of £17, plus £6 for Moon, you essentially get Ø for free.
A5 prints: Printed on high-quality 300gsm eco-paper; a premium recycled finish with a textured look. Prints will be numbered and signed.
A5 original artwork: Based on the characters, ink-drawn and painted in the original style of the comic. If you’d like a personalised message on the front or back of the original, please let me know.
Original artwork: Limited to 3, the original A3 comic spread will be picked at random. All original artwork is inked and painted, just as you see it in the comics!
Two words... Temporary tattoos. If Moon reaches £1000+ everyone ordering a physical copy will get a pack of temporary tattoos based on images from the comic. What more could you need?
If we smash £1250+, then I'll have to think of something else. But if temporary tattoos are anything to go by, it's going to be something good.
Postage is available worldwide, and all orders will be shipped in card-backed envelopes to ensure that your goodies arrive in optimum condition. All post will be sent via Royal Mail, 1st Class within the UK (1-2 working days) or Royal Mail International Standard for everywhere else (Europe, 3-5 working days/Rest of the world, 5-7 working days).
Please note, pledges of £30+ (containing original artwork) will be sent via tracked delivery services only. This ensures we're both covered in the unlikely event that your rewards go missing. If your orders under £30 and you’d rather have a tracked service, please get in touch.
From now until the end of funding I will be happily inking, painting and finishing up the remaining pages, working on the prints and original artwork. If funding is successful, I will send the files over to The Newspaper Club as soon as this campaign ends, with Moon landing at my door by mid-late September. All rewards will be sent out at the end of September to early October.
I need £800 to make Moon a real, physical comic. Out of the total amount, a whopping 85% goes purely to printing, Royal Mail shipping costs and packaging supplies. A further 10% is a cumulation of Kickstarter's own fees and card transaction fees for each pledge, and the remaining 5% goes towards the costs of the A5 prints. Telling stories and making comics is a labour of love, and I don't pay myself for the privilege from your pledge money.
Why should I fund this? I decided to create this story because I think we all need some child-like fascination and magic in our lives. My wish is for someone to pick up Moon and be transported away from his/her/their troubles and become lost in a dream. There is always time to worry about school, work, money or relationships, and we all deserve to escape.
Please pledge today, and help make this comic a reality.

Quotes from Cosmos & Other Stories:
"If you’ve ever been lost in a crowd, stayed up all night to talk to someone long distance, or felt the ache of an absent love, then this collection will speak to you." - Daniel Elkin, Comics Bulletin
"This is a book that I guarantee you will reread and enjoy. You may also shed a tiny tear." Tony Esmond, Down the Tubes
"There’s an appropriate fragility to the pages of Cosmos & Other Stories that sublimely reflects its heartfelt subject matter...Cosmos & Other Stories isn’t a comic you read. It’s a comic you feel." - Andy Oliver, Broken Frontier
Risks and challenges
The script and pencilled artwork are complete, so the only remaining aspect of the project is to ink and paint the 17 pages of story, and prepare it for print. I have two-and-a-half weeks for this, as it's the fastest part of making the comic.
If funding is successful (which I really hope it is!), this newspaper format comic will be printed by Glasgow-based The Newspaper Club. Their turnaround for artwork to delivery is 3-5 days. I also have quotes ready for all remaining aspects of the project, i.e. the A5 prints and temporary tattoos. The turnaround time is so quick as I'm planning to launch Moon at the comics festival Thought Bubble on the 23rd-24th September in Leeds, England. As my timeline is so tight, orders will be posted out the week following (24th-30th September)
All in all, I'm in the final stages of this project and all the logistical elements in place. Although the deadline is tight, there are no foreseeable problems with completing the work and having it go to print, however, in the rare eventuality that something might go wrong, I shall use my crisis control expertise to make sure I drag myself through perilous seas to deliver all pledged rewards on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
