Update #36

It's April in Australia

It's April! It's Australia! What a great combination. We've been warned that there are downsides to trying to do serious things on the very first day of April, but we're going to just take our chances on this one. We hope you won't mind.

Before we get to this month's chapter, a quick update on the "flat" puzzles for backers at the Thinker level and above. We have not yet gotten the proofs of the puzzles from our printer, but we've been working with them and expect that to finally happen in the coming week. And then we'll get to the actually printing stage.

And, now, Canberra, Australia ...

For this puzzle, we asked Richard Garfield to put together some lists of fun things. Richard is best known as the inventor of the games Magic: The Gathering and RoboRally, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Richard recently co-wrote the fantastic book Characteristics of Games, one of the few books that focuses on what actually makes games of all types fun. If you want to create games, the book is highly recommended. Plus, he also loves and creates fun puzzles.

To top things off, we've arranged for a special, surprise editor to make sure nothing will go wrong.

So, look at Richard's lists, discover what's extra, and you'll have it all figured out. That's all there is to it. We think. Maybe. We hope. Hey, wait a minute ...

The Logic Puzzle of Spring

Comment

Welcome to the first day of spring! Wouldn't it be great if you could just relax in the hot springs in Nagano, Japan ... just soak and enjoy the warm (hot) water, a cool breeze, and birds singing? You could stay there all day, but then you'd miss a fun and unique Nurikabe Path puzzle by Thomas Snyder aka Dr. Sudoku.

Thomas is a three-time World Sudoku Champion and six-time US Puzzle Champion, but he's not just a solver — he also creates fantastic logic puzzles, and he's come up with this clever variant on Nurikabe logic puzzles. Thomas is also the founder of Grandmaster Puzzles, which specializes in hand-crafted logic puzzles. Check them out.

Our Fiftieth Book

While we're here, we've got some other big news. We recently shipped our fiftieth puzzle book in the Puzzazz app, and it's a pretty great one. Puzzability's Variety Show is an awesome book of ingenious variety grid puzzles by Mike Shenk, puzzle editor of the Wall Street Journal and puzzle author extraordinaire. Check it out!

Update #34

Welcome to Greencastle

What's next in your world travels? Greencastle, Indiana.

Greencastle, Indiana?! Don't worry, it makes sense and we think you'll enjoy the visit. It is a small town with a big table.

If you're solving in Puzzazz, you'll need the latest version of the Puzzazz app (3.2), which we just released — click here to update. After you update Puzzazz, it may take a few minutes for the new puzzle to appear.

If you're solving on paper, go to http://www.puzzazz.com/yearofpuzzles to download the latest PDF file.

The Flat Puzzles

We forgot to mention the "flat" puzzles in the last update, for everybody at the Thinker level and above. This is two puzzles instead of one because we got to the magical 499 backers in the closing minutes of the campaign. These puzzles are now at the printer and we expect to be able to proof them next week.

We've got the oversize cardboard mailers and mailing labels ready to go. But, if you've moved since you gave us your address, now would be a great time to let us know (send us an email or use Kickstarter's contact link).

Things to come

First off, some apologies are in order. We've been too silent lately, and we're behind schedule. We're sorry for both the delays and the lack of communication. Puzzazz is a small startup company and it can be hard to juggle all of what's going on. The Year of Puzzles is very important to us, and we appreciate your patience. If you're one of the people who has complained, know that we've heard you. We promise to do a better job at keeping you updated, and we're working to improve our delivery speed.

Upcoming Puzzles

The next puzzle in the Year of Puzzles will come out in the next couple of days. And here's some advance info on upcoming puzzles. Three of the next five puzzles will be by:

  • Richard Garfield, inventor of Magic: The Gathering and RoboRally, and co-author of Characteristics of Games, one of the few books that focuses on what actually makes games of all types fun.
  • Thomas Snyder aka Dr. Sudoku, founder of Grandmaster Puzzles (gmpuzzles.com), which specializes in hand-crafted logic puzzles. Thomas is also a three-time World Sudoku Champion and six-time US Puzzle Champion.
  • Eric Harshbarger, who is both a professional Lego sculptor and a professional puzzle author, and also the inventor of Go First Dice.

Finally, a note on two other Kickstarter-backed ebooks we're working on.

The print edition of Cryptic All-Stars shipped recently, with a collection of fantastic variety cryptics. We're working hard on the ebook conversion and Puzzazz will be supporting all of the cool and crazy twists that Publisher Roger Wolff, Editor Bob Stigger, and the authors came up with. It is going to be awesome! We are aiming for a March release.

The print edition of Mike Selinker's The Maze of Games is off at the printers, and we're expecting to receive the final puzzles and art soon. We can say it is absolutely gorgeous — great puzzles by Mike and stunning artwork by Pete Venters. Mike has asked that we ship the ebook after the print edition, so that people who are getting both the print and electronic editions have their first experience with the paper. And we're doing our best job to make sure the ebook is faithful to the print edition.

Update #32

Looking Forward ... to More Puzzles

Yesterday was the 100th Anniversary of Arthur Wynne's first crossword puzzle. We very seriously considered making that one of the holidays for the Year of Puzzles. Ultimately, we decided there was quite enough going on. But, we're giving everybody not one, but two, special puzzles to commemorate the day, one each by Roy Leban and Parker Lewis. You'll find them in our Crossword Centenary Roundup, along with a number of other similar puzzles, links to tribute puzzles around the web, plus links to articles, videos, interviews, and even a poem inspired by the crossword's birthday.

While the crossword's birthday was big news yesterday, today's news is about the future. Puzzazz continues to lead the way in the future of puzzles in the digital world, with our powerful puzzle engine and our exclusive TouchWrite technology. We're still the only app, on any digital platform, where you can solve the print edition of every daily New York Times crossword.

Today, we're excited to announce the release of Connect-the-Dots Crosswords by Elizabeth C. Gorski, a fun collection of 10 new Sunday-size crosswords with an extra element, a connect-the-dots puzzle after you've filled it in. See if you can guess what it is before you reveal it. And, if that's not quite enough, you'll find the connecting lines float above the grid just a little bit for a really nice effect.

You'll find Connect-the-Dots Crosswords in the Featured Books section in Puzzazz.

Finally, although we didn't make yesterday a holiday, it is the holiday season, and we'll be celebrating the next puzzle in the Year of Puzzles right around the New Year.

Hope your holidays are good ones.
