We’re launching a shared universe for interactive speculative fiction stories committed to the idea that you don’t need to marginalize any character to make a profit. We want art that supports our words and ideals, and you can help make that happen.
About This ProjectOur universe guidebook needs art! We have a story-centric universe that we think is pretty neat, with a mix of sci-fi and fantasy worlds (with a dose of horror and a touch of steampunk) interconnected by the setting's most iconic element: women who can Step from world to world. We're launching our site and our universe in March, and while we have a guidebook about the universe full of expressive words that we think will inspire storytellers of all stripes to want to make cool stories with us, the book is kinda plain right now. It's just text. Don't get us wrong: we love words! But we also love art, and we don't have any. If you also love sci-fi and fantasy art (or horror or steampunk art) our project is right up your alley!
Where the Money GoesArtists. We’ll hire artists to make art for all of us to enjoy. Specifically, we'll be hiring artists with styles inspired by both manga and Western comics, who have also proven their ability to create strong, unconventional, and non-objectified women (and other characters who are not white men) with their art. If that’s the sort of art you’d like to see more of (and put up on your wall and wear on your torso) then please support our project! We'll be hiring the artists on a work-for-hire basis and acquiring the full rights to the images, as we do with our words.
Our biggest expenditure will be our cover and we’ll use the rest of our budget primarily for full-color, full-body, no-background character illustrations. If we exceed our funding request we’ll use the excess to buy more pieces of art, including maybe some half-page action scenes or evocative landscapes.
One of our goals at Royal Archivist is to make a setting, tell stories, and support a community friendly to a diverse audience. To that end, we're only interested in the empowering aspects of our chosen art styles (avoiding the seedy and uncomfortable areas in which art sometimes indulges). Please keep this in mind if you're a $250+ patron (see the rewards). Thanks. :)
What Will HappenThe PDF guidebook comes out on March 16th, sans art. We'll do a major update of the PDF as soon as all the art is in. But don't worry: the people who buy the PDF when it's just text will also get access to the pretty version that your contributions made possible (see our website for details on that).
Once the final art comes in we’ll contact everyone who pledged enough for a physical thing and we’ll work out the details (which piece(s) of art you want in print(s), t-shirt size, mailing address, &c.). Then we’ll re-layout the guidebook with all the art in it, publish the updated version, and make sure all of you due copies get them.
