Welcome to the launch of the Apollo - the world's most versatile set of drafting instruments.
Machined out of aerospace-grade titanium and marine-grade stainless steel, the Apollo Pen is designed to support over 50+ precision-point refills and multiple upgrade modules.
Forged from a single solid block of aircraft grade aluminum, the Apollo Tri-Scale serves as a fully functional architect's scale and a transporter case for your Apollo Pens.
Our products are beautifully designed and focused to provide the best possible user experience. We're confident the Apollo will become your ultimate drafting tool.
- A brilliant and innovative design was a prerequisite for us. What started as a simple idea evolved into something that exceeded all of our expectations.
- Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. In a world of excess, we strive to fit multiple functions into simpler form factors. The Apollo serves its technical purpose while keeping you organized and looking great on your desk.
- The pen looks and feels so good in your hand. The Apollo Pen and Tri-Scale combination is a working piece of art. Everyone you know will want to borrow it!
As good as it looks. The Apollo is made by makers for makers. Our aim was to create a set of professional tools that would not only surpass an architect's drafting requirements, but also inspire confidence and creativity in your projects.
Tackle projects requiring various types of ink, colors, and line weights. The Apollo Pen accepts over 50 different precision-point, needle-point, rollerball, and fineliner refills.
The pen's unique hexagonal body and knurled grip enhance comfort and control.
The pattern and size of the stainless steel grip allows working for hours without fatigue.
An optimized nib length and shape enables unparalleled precision and full visibility of the targeted writing area.
The Tri-Scale combines 6 precision scales with a 3-pen storage and selection system in a gorgeous, minimalist form-factor with a modern twist.
The Apollo System was designed to use a variety of interchangeable modules to facilitate drafting, drawing, measuring, or writing needs. You can swap the pen's color rings to indicate refill color, add a stylus, swap refills, and convert length measurements on the fly.
With the right module, you can even transform your pen into a mechanical pencil.
Apollo Pens and Tri-Scales are made without compromise. Each pen is machined from Aerospace-Grade Titanium and Marine-Grade INOX Stainless Steel.
We used different premium materials in different parts of the pen for a purpose. Even after years of handling, the stainless steel will never show signs of wear. The balanced counter-weight of the titanium gives the Apollo an edge over other writing instruments.
We then refine the raw machined components through a rigorous multi-stage blasting, plating, and finishing process to give it a smooth, durable, and extremely long lasting finish.
The Apollo Pen and Tri-Scale are available in 3 gorgeous finishes:
- Satin Silver - The Satin Silver look is achieved by glass bead-blasting the material surface for a super-smooth finish. We then treat the Titanium to make it tough and durable so that it continues to show off its subtle metallic shine for very long time.
- Black Stealth - A beautiful, deep all-black finish bonded directly to the Titanium and Stainless Steel components. This finish is achieved using the plating methods you find on aerospace components, engine parts, marine applications, and premium drill bits. Producing a subtle shine through the color, you just might be able to catch the light reflecting off the sharp edges of your Apollo. (For added contrast, scale markings on the Tri-Scale are printed in white.)
- Steampunk Brass - Recovered from Captain Nemo’s ship wreck, this Steampunk brass-style finish is a timeless addition to your collection. This finish is achieved using the same techniques as the Black Stealth, but we play with the process a little to give it that extra deep gold color that won't fade.
The Kickstarter community cherishes a vision of creating quality products that aren't designed to be thrown out or fail. We've put everything into making the best set of pens we can and now we need your help to propel the Apollo into the next phase of its life.
By pledging on our project you are helping us meet minimum order volumes required by our manufacturers and driving down supply costs to attain the best possible materials to craft your tools. We would love to be able to do this ourselves but the upfront costs are overwhelming for our small team.
Any support you can offer helps us make this product a reality and in return we will do whatever we can to provide you with the best possible rewards!
$130,000 - Refills Unlocked
The Lamy Z60 Pencil Mechanism and Hi-Tec-C refills will be available as pledge add-ons! The refills and Z60 pencil mechanism will be shipped along with your Apollo order. We are nowhere near the needed order size for Lamy Germany to give us any special treatment, so we've had to jump through hoops and over hurdles to find a reliable source for the Lamy Z60 mechanism for all pencil backers at a rate of $12 per pencil mechanism. We also managed to work out a better deal with our current supplier of Hi-Tec-C refills - we can offer them as pledge add-ons at a discounted rate of $2 per additional refill!
[UPDATED] $130,000 - Bound Leather Notebooks Unlocked
Made by a partner of ours, we have asked them for help in producing beautiful pocket-sized field notebooks to take with you everywhere. These notebooks are the perfect companion; use them for writing, sketching and jotting down ideas. They contain acid-free paper, are highly durable and feature an elastic strap to keep them closed when not in use. Each notebook will be sold as a $5 pledge add-on.
$200,000 - Premium Carrying Cases Unlocked
We are thrilled to announce this premium case stretch goal! A lot of our backers will be happy to hear that if this milestone is achieved, we will design and ramp up operations to produce high quality leather carrying cases for the individual pens as well as for the Tri-Scale. This requires the Apollo Team to start putting together a totally new set of products all together—new designs, new materials, and a new manufacturing process. The designs will be finalized after the stretch goal is achieved.
The Apollo Technical Pen ships with a Hi-Tec-C Refill in the color of your choice (Black, Blue, or Red).
If you have another favorite refill or if your work demands different line weights, colors, or other characteristics, we've got you covered. The Apollo supports a multitude of refills that can be easily found online or at your local art supply store.
We're working on a complete Apollo Refill Database that will list every supported refill, its pictures, specifications, available sizes, subtle characteristics, and reviews. To receive notifications and further information on when this feature will be available, subscribe to the mailing list on our website at www.apollopens.com.
Risks and challenges
Having worked on several products in the past, our team has learned that we must have complete control over our products and supply chain. Our team's experience helps us plan for unforeseen problems that can come up when taking a product concept into full-scale manufacturing.
Over the last few months we have scrutinized every procedure of our production and delivery process. Along with our manufacturing partners, suppliers, and shippers, we've created a mitigation and contingency plan for several identifiable fulfillment risks. All of our timelines include significant buffers for any issues that may arise and we hope to drive hard to get you your Apollo even sooner than expected.
We believe maintaining a frequent and open dialogue with our backers and having a strong policy of transparency is critical. Every step along the way, we'll make it a priority to inform you about our progress, our timelines, and of course - our successes!
This project would not be possible without the help of several key individuals who have done some amazing work and have been with us every step of the way.
Cloud in the Sky Studios:
