Thorn of the Rose: Issue 13: Identity Riots
How are identities bound up in trust?
When the Registration Acts were passed worldwide in 2020, the cause and effect relationships either did not occur to the politicians and pundits, or no one actually mentioned the inevitable outcome—generations of children born on the outside. Generations born unable to ever enter society and be registered. For the acts did not provide a process for registering if there was no birth certificate, nor did they allow for health care or for any other assistance to an unregistered person. Without a doctor to vouch for the birth or a parent to provide a name, accidents happened, and children grew up, cadging a living on the outside edges of society.
Without that identity from your country of origin, you simply did not exist. It wasn’t simply a matter of not being able to get food or shelter or any other physical thing needed for keeping a body and an unnamable spirit together. Much worse was the denial of the mind, of not being granted a Port to get onto the internet—where every book could be downloaded, where every professor and teacher could be followed, if only you had the time and the talent and the drive to learn.
Killing someone is easy when that person has no identity and does not exist on the books. The first thing the brass do is identify the victim through the biometrics. If the patterns from those pieces of flesh are not found in a database, then the victims become Jane or John Doe and are promptly forgotten in favor of victims who do matter, whose identities are registered.
And killing illegals? Well, that is our patriotic duty, some claim. Those illegals are here, without papers, to steal our jobs. To take from the system and not give back. And we can’t have that. Besides, without an identity and registration, these illegals are completely unaccountable in the system. They can bring in drugs, brew moonshine, run gambling casinos, any damn thing they want. You can’t trust an illegal to be an upright, solid citizen, now, can you? The only good illegal is a dead illegal. Stamp out this nonsense here and now. And the kids, too—they are only baby vermin that will simply breed more vermin.
And thus, the Illegal Riots of the 2040s were spawned. And thus, Sarah and Thorn were kicked out of the motel where they’d managed to stay, paying cash each night, as it was simply too dangerous for the motel to accept cash any more. Registered credit accounts only. The only places that would take them now were the backs of dumpsters. Which is precisely where the Illegal Killers found them.
