If there was such a job as a mermaid anthropologist, I would've been that instead of being an artist.
Alas, cryptozoology has even less job security than freelance artistry, so I've stuck to drawing mermaids obsessively for the past 18 years. I'm Megan Rose Gedris, also known as Rosalarian, a comic book writer and illustrator from Chicago. I have loved mermaids my entire life, and have made countless stories about them. There are variations of mermaid legends in every culture around the world, and I love them all. In the Western tradition, mermaids have always been portrayed with a sort of generic fish on the bottom. After so many years of drawing generic fish mermaids, I started to grow restless. There are so many fish in the sea, so many strange water-dwelling creatures. What if I turned those into mermaids?
You know what lives in the water? Alligators. Bam, alligator mermaid. We've got clams, we've got snails, we've got turtles and sharks and axolotyls and nudibranches and whales and OMG even water bears. We've got dang ol' tardigrade mermaids!!! Starfish and anglerfish and mantis shrimp and sea pigs, betta fish and lion fish and flying fish and honeycomb cowfish. Check out this nautilus mermaid:
There were going to be 50 mermaids in the book but a stretch goal unlocked 10 additional mermaids for 60 weird as hell merms to color in!!! (Thanks everybody!) There's a good mix of pages with complicated backgrounds vs simple backgrounds, so there will always be a page to fit your mood. There will be a glossary so you'll be able to look up the creatures to see what color schemes they come in naturally, or go wild and use your imagination.
A few mermaids aren't wearing clamshells, but any nipples are depicted in a non-sexual, artistic way. Parents, I'll let you decide what's appropriate for your kids, but I don't think we're gonna warp any post-puberty minds here.
PDF of the book - All the pages in hi-res digital format so you can print them off and color them in again and again or color them digitally at 450 DPI.
Paperback hard copy of the book - A perfect-bound book you can hold in your hands and take on the train. I'm just imagining you coloring this on a train. Color it wherever you please. Approximately 8"x10". Each page is blank on the back so you don't have to worry about bleeding through the paper. Thanks to unlocked stretch goal, all physical books will come with stickers!
Hard enamel pins - A 2" enamel cloisonné pin of an oyster mermaid holding a pearl. The pearl will be 3D!
Colored in page - A really nice signed print that I color in digitally myself.
You as a strange mermaid - You send me a photo, I draw you as a a weird mermaid. Include $50 for each additional person in the drawing. You'll get a nice color print of the drawing.
You as a strange mermaid INCLUDED IN THE BOOK - You send me a photo, I draw you as a a weird mermaid and the drawing goes in the book. There is a bit of wiggle room on what can be portrayed, but I reserve the right to veto something that doesn't fit the tone. Keep it weird and PG-13. Must get reference photos to me in a timely manner.
$6,000 - ACHIEVED!!! - Sticker pack for everyone getting physical book
$8,000 - ACHIEVED!!! Increases book to at least 60 pages
$10,000 - Foil stamping on the covers
Risks and challenges
If a lot of people back at the tier that gets their picture included in the book, or if the $8k stretch goal is unlocked and the book increases to 60 pages, it'll delay the release of the book. BUT you'll get a bigger book with more pages.
This will be my 4th kickstarter. I've got this pretty well handled by this point.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
