HEY MAN, WHAT IS THE FAN PROJECT?
The premise is simple. A minimal pledge of $14 gets you in the song club. I'm going to write two songs per week (a total of 14 songs), demo them in my home studio, and deliver them to your email inbox every Monday for 6 weeks. After the campaign is complete YOUR VOTE will decide 7 of the 12 songs I will record and release for my 3rd studio album. The remaining 5 songs will be a surprise when the album releases in the fall!
WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS, RORY?
There is nothing more important to me than the ongoing support I receive from my fans and friends for the music I create. You truly support my dreams, visions, and goals and I am so thankful to have you in my life!
I live on the connection that's made between you and me through music. It brings us both together, allowing us to feel similar emotions so that we can experience life together; whether it be a song, a memory, a love, a pain, a sense of community, a feeling of support, the possibilities are endless. It pushes us, by expressing what we're feeling TOGETHER. Now I want to bring us closer than ever before and have you become an intimate part of my album creation process!
To the right you'll see the rewards I've created to make this dream a reality. I'm giving away everything from my personal demo collection, handwritten lyrics, your name in the liner notes, executive producer credits, or even my first guitar as a way to support The Fan Project.
All rewards come with the Fan Project club songs where you'll get two songs emailed to you every Monday starting March 17th (if you pledge later than the first week I'll send you all the songs released thus far to catch you up). Check out the chart below and more details on the right of this screen — and please make a pledge!
WHERE WILL THE $ GO?
Most people don't realize how expensive releasing an album really is. Major record labels today operate on budgets of $200K or more just to record an album, so this is a conservative budget in comparison if that helps to put things into perspective. Below you will see a breakdown of everything we can achieve with the funds raised.
THE PLAN & TEAM
I have put together a concrete plan and budget of how to best release this album with each potential stretch goal in mind. Here is a list of various promotional elements that an make all the difference in a successful album release along with the names of the companies I'll be using to do so.
- Publicity - A great music PR firm is able to increase awareness in all media. They get articles in magazines, blogs, newspapers. They get you on television shows, web concert series, radio performances. They get you OUT THERE. I'm using Tinderbox Music (Ingrid Michaelson, Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos )
- Radio - Various online and terrestrial radio platforms are still one of the most effective ways for people to discover new music. I'm using Bluebird Promotions (Gregory Douglass, Hotels & Highways)
- Videos - Check out some of the examples on the page to get an idea of the kind of work I've done. I'm using Jordyn Gatti and Rob Waters (Bystander Productions).
- Advertising - I plan to have ads on Facebook, Spotify, iTunes, Music Magazines...I have mapped out the most effective places to advertise to increase awareness of the music.
- Mailings - Even while everything is mostly digital these days, mailings are still VERY important to getting the word out with a personal physical touch.
- Film/Television/Commercials - I am working with multiple licensing companies and they are waiting on this new recording so they can use it on their networks! I'm using Indabamusic, Atrium Music, Songs 4 Screens, Indie Music For Film, Give 2 Get Music, Tinderbox Music.
- Tour Press - I am currently planning a fall/winter tour. In order to effectively promote the tour, I have a publicist solely dedicated to promoting the shows and getting local press. All part of the well rounded plan. I'm using Tinderbox Music.
I am so grateful to have an outstanding and experienced business team working with me right now. I am essentially running my own record label! Here is a look at what I'll be spending the funds on once we are ready to release the album.
SEEING IS BELIEVING
Shot by John Sanvidge and George Skoufas of NYC, directed by John Sanvidge. John came to me with the lyrics and I wrote the music. "Better Now" was featured in John's incredibly moving independent documentary entitled, "Finding Seoul".
Shot and directed by Greg Boulden of Wilmington, DE. I wanted to cover a holiday song and the fans voted on this one. Greg is an amazing film maker and so glad I got to work with such a talented storyteller.
Shot by Indabamusic after wining grand prize for the CD Baby Songwriting Contest. $10,000 in prizes, thank you Indabamusic.
A special thanks Gregory Douglass at thecreativeadvisor.com for his help with project planning and support. I first met Gregory when he sang and performed on my song "Out Of Here" for my debut EP, "Here All Along" in 2009. He is an amazing musician, songwriter, entrepreneur, and a brilliant light in the music community of Burlington, VT. Thank you Gregory!
Also a big thanks to Matt Terranova for the graphic designs and his amazing artistic abilities. Please visit his website colorfulmatt.carbonmade.com to see his mural work and awesome talent.
And of course to the amazing Jamie Chura from www.jamieandkelley.com for shooting and directing this Kickstarter video. Jamie is also a very talented musician, check out his music at www.churamusic.com.
And of course, thank YOU for all your support, time, generosity, and belief in me as a musician. You truly support my career and craft, something I am grateful for everyday. I am so excited to be joining you in creating this project and album. Please make a pledge today and let's make this new album together!
Risks and challenges
I have the utmost confidence in the development of this new album! That said, nothing in the music business is guaranteed. Every project has the potential for setbacks, so please keep that in mind throughout the course of this project. Setbacks depend upon things like collaborators that might hold up the development process, production quality that might not meet immediate expectations, any weather or unforeseen events that might postpone production, and other things of this nature. As an experienced and responsible entrepreneur, I am able to maneuver through any such problems with a solid network of people and solve any issues that may arise in a highly professional manner.
Please also keep in mind that Kickstarter is an “all or nothing” platform. If we are even $1 short of reaching my $10K “bottom line” Kickstarter goal, you will not be charged for your pledge and I will receive nothing at all. If my $10K “baseline” goal is successfully funded, your card will be charged when the project reaches its funding deadline (April 30th, 2014 approximately). If the project does not reach its $10K “baseline” goal, your card is never charged. If I meet my $10K “baseline” goal, I will get to record a powerful new album with a stripped-down production vibe album as promised – and any funds raised beyond that will speak to the various levels of allocation listed above as each level is successfully reached. The level of funding will dictate what is truly possible for the production of this new album so please understand that production plans will unfold accordingly. If this project is successfully funded at any level – the album will be released in some glorious shape or form, and you will receive your rewards and incentives in the near future in exchange for your amazing support. In the meantime, thank you for your patience throughout the development process!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
