About

What is it?

DEAD+GONE is a card game played between 2 players that each assume the role of a loosely defined horror antagonist. One player will rip and tear their way through their victims as a ravenous Creature, while the other will chip away at emotional stability and sanity with classic scare tactics like thumping and bumping in the night as the Spirit. Both players trade actions as things escalate towards one of many possible bloody and frightening finales where even the victims may come out on top.

Each turn in DEAD+GONE is called a Night and each night brings a new Event (and later, new Horrors) into play which affect the game in various ways from doubling damage, drawing extra cards or even resulting in the iconic Final Girl surviving.

At the start of each game, the Resident deck is shuffled and dealt out randomly, meaning that the unsuspecting victims and the events that transpire are randomized each time, making each game of DEAD+GONE wildly different from the last while still naturally escalating like a horror movie, with opening acts kept relatively tame compared to the more explosive final act where loss of life or sanity is certain and things can swing violently in a single turn.

DEAD+GONE comes with 108 cards.

  • 25 in the Creature Deck.
  • 25 in the Spirit Deck.
  • 20 Resident cards to serve as the potential victims for each player.
  • 16 Event cards that add life and randomness to the game with things like blackouts and a babysitter being called in.
  • 20 Horror cards that serve as the climactic actions and events of the scenario with the most lethal and thrilling sides of the game hidden within.
  • 2 turn-tracker cards to make the mechanical sides of DEAD+GONE easier to follow.
  • A rule book with a play-guide and a paper play mat to show where to play certain things to help first timers easily grasp the mechanics more easily and focus on enjoying the twists and turns of the game.

This is all packaged in a sliding tray box with a smooth matte finish that comfortably stores the cards and inserts in a stylish, spooky rectangle. (Dice and coins not included.)

Why though?

Several years ago, I was stuck in the unfortunate situation of not having experience needed to be employed despite being a fresh graduate and so I had to turn to freelancing from my bedroom studio to bolster and flesh out my folio. This ended up with mixed results including a huge blow to my mental health that all but burned me out creatively entirely until one night during all this, I wrote down a seemingly throw away idea about horror movies and kept returning to it bit by bit as my creative spark re-ignited over the year or two during this time.

DEAD+GONE represents the culmination of every struggle I went through creatively and professionally during these recent years and to me, it's the most ambitious and fulfilling thing I've done creatively. It's been very fulfilling and challenging and overall a huge boon to my mental health.

(It also gave me something very cheap to do over the summer!)

What's the deal?

I'm raising funds because as a fresh-out-of-TAFE student, I'm not exactly swimming in anything besides student debt and a bit of wonder as to where my portfolio now stands after several years dabbling in freelance work where I can squeeze it in between flashes of existential dread and general heat-death aversion.

If this gets funded, the game can get to a few dozen people and who knows? I might get picked up by a publisher or hired on at some studio in the future. At the end of the day, it all boils down to a DIY kid with a pad and a pencil, making stuff he loves. I hope that with this project being funded, that passion and enjoyment can bleed out into everyone else's lives a bit and of course, give you a fun game that's unlike anything else available.

Mindless Self-Indulgence.

I've heard "Do the work you wanna be paid for." a few times over the years from peers and friends alike. With work for pro-wrestlers, musicians and comic books, I think covering horror movies and games completes the circle nicely.

Risks and challenges

The game is done and just awaiting funding for production.

I aim to get the game to backers in time for Halloween but there is always the chance that either production could be delayed or shipping could be slow so I've tentatively set the delivery date as Nov 2019 just in case to avoid over-promising in the event of multiple things going wrong.
