"International New School is a brand new centre for art, design and education made to support growing creative practices in new and exciting ways." Director, Reece Kennedy
The story so far...
Introducing International New School! From the creative team behind Rope Press, a risograph printing house and publisher based in Birmingham, the International New School is based in the heart of the city centre, only a few minutes’ walk from New Street train station and a stones throw from Digbeth bus station.
INS is a non-for-profit organisation created out of an already growing community of creatives. We want to bring new perspectives and opportunities to the city as well as...
- state of the art production facilities,
- access to high quality workspaces and studios
- and professional quality gallery spaces for events, exhibitions and more.
Why is this important? We set up Rope Press to give us and the wider creative community around us the freedom to work, publish and express ourselves freely. At the time there was nothing like us in the region, and we’ve been privileged to support and help many creatives with many different projects since. Four years later and we’ve watched the region around us change and grow, but there’s still a massive lack of opportunities and access to use high quality work spaces and facilities.
First Goal - Hit £20,000
For the past two and a half months we’ve been moving Rope Press into our brand new space. We’ve torn down walls, recycled a lot of wood, painted floors and walls, thrown rubble into skips (a favourite) and endlessly cleaned to start setting up the space for studio holders. We’ve put together this Kickstarter to help raise the funds needed to turn this already great space into a professional quality facility!
£20K includes basic building work + building professional Gallery space
- Commission Plane Structures, local carpentry geniouses to build our state of the art gallery space
- Electrician to re-do the ceiling lightning and place power fittings
- Building materials for construction
- Surveyor for planned building work
This will allow the facilities to begin to get populated with events! It’s a huge start that will mean our space can be used while we continue to work towards that dream.
Everything about our gallery is designed to create optimum functionality behind the most professional of exhibition spaces, with storage for workshops, course and events behind hinged and sliding walls.
Empowering the community - Hit £40,000
We've all heard the saying 'a bad craftsman always blames his tools'. It's also true that as makers sometimes we can never achieve the professional finish or consistency we want without those essential and elusive tools or pieces of equipment, no matter how skilled you are or how long you spend trying to cheat the process.
We know the landscape of the creative world is constantly changing. Artists and creatives constantly need to produce work in new ways and to a professional finish, trying different methods and mediums.
Reaching our first stretch goal will allow us to add to our already growing platform of valuable tools, machinery and resources that will be available to our members and the wider community to use. We want to give everyone access to equipment and techniques they might never have had the chance to use before. We’ve got huge plans to create a power house of facilities that our stretch goals will really help us acheive.

Changing Creative Futures - Hit £60,000
If we can reach £60,000 together we will be giving a truly special gift to the people of this city and wider area.
In the short term 2017 it would allow us to:
- Refurbish and furnish a second floor of our building
- Build a second smaller gallery / project space
- House a computer suite for our 3D Printers
- Build a fully functioning kitchen
- Put together a lounge
- Build meeting rooms
- Construct our book and gift shop
- Begin work on our Café!
From these foundations our plans for 2018/19 and beyond include:
- Alternative courses + scholarships
- Jobs and internships
- Exhibition programs and much, much more!
We want to bring Birmingham and the West Midlands affordable access to facilities, spaces and tools and to provide opportunities for people to learn and develop their careers. This should be available to everyone in the community, and helping us to hit our £60,000 dream target will give us a running start of making this vision a reality. You’ll have helped us raise in just over a month what would have taken us ten years to do otherwise!

Risks and challenges
So far we have raised £12,000 to cover the lease deposit and first few months rent, this also covers some basic machinery for the print room and get the ball rolling with the space to help us to pitch you this Kickstarter.
The train has left we have spent the past 3 months making basic preparations and now we're ready tell you our story!
Ultimately the success of this project rests on us raising as much money as possible. We have done everything we can to the space and facilities so far leaving no stone un-turned.
Without serious cash injection we won't be able to produce the quality space and facilities we all need as artists to get to where we need to be and help others do the same.
We need at least £60,000 in additional cash to bring the fully fledged vision of International New School to the masses, this would be a huge upgrade in arts facilities in the region long term. Whilst we don't want to compromise on quality, we also know that £20,000 is no small amount of money and we want to minimise the risk of jeopardising INS not having a bright future and consider the good £20,000 would still bring to artists working in the area in the short term.
If we are lucky and hit all our stretch goals we would be aiming for all work to be completed some time in December 2017 for an official grand opening of International New School first thing January 2018 if not sooner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
