As husband and wife, we embarked on a small business venture in our first year of marriage. With hopes of spending more time together and showing up to a job every week that we’re passionate about, Rooted was born. We started small with many markets, caterings, and events. 4 years ago we got the opportunity to be a vendor at our local Walnut Creek farmers market, 10 minutes from our home, in the city we were both born and raised in. I can still remember getting the call, my heart knew intuitively that this was going to be something good. Rain or shine we’ve showed up, put linens on plastic tables, brought buckets of waffle batter, gallons of coffee, and love in our hearts. We leave Sundays feeling exhausted and emptied while being simultaneously filled up and encouraged. We feel honored to serve our tribe, honored to be a part of community, and honored that our customers say yes to small business, yes to family business, yes to local, and yes to organic, ethically sourced products. (If you’re a customer, pat yourself on the back because saying yes to Rooted means saying yes to your deeper values which makes you freaking AWESOME.)
Our time has come to transition into our next calling, Rooted 2.0, which is a brick and mortar storefront cafe. We hope to share our love of plant based food and specialty drinks with more people while also offering a space for people to feel known, valued, and appreciated. Our dream from day one has been to open a storefront, so after nearly 6 years of being mobile, we feel more ready and equipped than ever!
We found our home at Oak Park Blvd in Pleasant Hill, on the border of Walnut Creek, right near the bike trail. Our shop will be a cozy 700 square feet, with some inside seating, outside seating and lots of parking spaces! Please support what you can to help our dream come true!
Risks and challenges
We signed the lease and got our keys September 1st, 2018. We just submitted our plans and drawings to the health department for approval which will take at least four weeks for approval. We hope to begin build out by Mid-October which includes knocking down walls, refining the customer bathroom, adding outside seating, bike parking, ripping up tile, and changing out the front doors and windows. We also will be gathering equipment like an espresso machine, waffle irons, mixers, blenders, and more. We hope everything will be complete by December 1st so we can do a month of soft openings and adjusted hours with our official grand opening January 1, 2019!
