About the RD9 Pen
The RD9 Pen was designed with a emphasis on craftsmanship, usability, and visual appeal.
We knew we wanted a pen that could withstand daily pocket abuse, which meant using high quality and scratch resistant materials. Both Titanium and Carbon Fiber are not only naturally beautiful, but also light weight and incredibly durable. It also needed to be very functional and reliable, which made the Fisher Space Pen refill the obvious choice. Its small size fits well with the 'EDC' role, and its unique design enables it to write in a variety of situations unmatched by other refills. Our desire for a high level of craftsmanship lead us towards simplified parts, to ensure our attention isn't pulled away from the finest of details. The dual O-Ring retention method allows the cap to be quickly removed but securely retained. It also seals the refill from water, dirt, and debris and provides an ergonomic grip. In the end, all of these features add up to make an elegant, comfortable, reliable and durable pen.
The Design Process
One we have an idea for a project, we start by making some quick sketches on a notebook or napkin.
Then we move to our white board and start sketching the features of that project.
Once we are satisfied, we move the project into a solid modeling program.
After we get it perfect in the modeling program we assign some CNC toolpaths and start cutting prototypes.
We go through several revisions until it is just right.
How is it made?
The RD9 Pen will be precision turned from Titanium Rod Ti-6Al-4v on a CNC Lathe. Carbon Fiber tubes are cut and sanded to length, and the ends burnished for a perfectly smooth blend where the pieces mate. The turned Titanium pieces are glued and pressed into the Carbon Fiber tubes. O-rings are installed to retain the cap, and a set screw is used to lock the refill in place. Pocket clips are CNC machined and precision formed using our custom fixtures. Each assembled pen is visually inspected prior to packaging and shipping.
If you pledge for anodizing, choose your favorite voltage using the charts below. That number is what we will need for the survey after the project ends. Please note: Colors may vary. We tried our best to get accurate pictures, but the color will change in different light conditions and depending on how clean it is.

First and foremost, your money will go directly to fulfilling your reward. It will also enable us to develop the better projects in the future, potentially adding a piece of equipment here and there, expanding our capabilities to enable us to create even cooler stuff.
When will rewards ship?
All rewards will immediately begin production when funds are received and the project ends. See Production Plan graphic for more detailed information! If any additional quantities are added, they will follow the same production plan as "Phase 1" but with an additional one month delay.

Risks and challenges
While unanticipated issues can always arise, we consider ourselves well experienced in product development. The final RD9 Pen that ships to your door will go through the same process we used to produce our prototypes, so we already have a very good idea of how much time is involved in each step. Our ship estimates not only take this into account, but leave ample time for those unforeseen gremlins that could potentially come up. All of the turned and machined parts will be produced in-house, and carbon fiber tubes will be finished by us as well. Other parts, like the set screws and o-rings are sourced from vendors, but are readily available/off the shelf parts which we anticipate no issues sourcing regardless of quantities. Both raw titanium rod and carbon fiber tube are available from a variety of sources, but because of their relatively low production numbers, they are essentially the only components with the possibility to cause schedule issues.
