Several years ago, we were one of the very first to use this platform to fund the creation of our album Steamboat Soul. Thanks to your support, the band has grown leaps and bounds since then. We've toured coast to coast, released a live album, and performed at many of the premier festivals and venues in the U.S. This year we are proud to be able to record, mix, master, and print our new record Full Head of Steam (Feb 2014), on our own! So to all the backers with us the first time, yours was the gift that keeps on giving! This newest record is head-and-shoulders above what we've ever accomplished, and with your support, it will help take our visibility to the next level. We're learning to navigate the wilds of the modern music industry. With the new record in hand and the wind at our backs, we'll still need to get tastemakers excited about us, and increase our airplay. A brand spankin' new music video is the best place to start. Apparently this Youtube thing is around for the long haul- in fact Youtube is now the #1 way music is consumed across the globe. The four of us had so much fun making the kickstarter video above, and are itching to put our creative minds together and make a stunning music video for Full Head of Steam.

We plan to take the single “Oh to Be” and work with a top notch production team to craft a compelling and highly entertaining video. To get you excited, we are posting a preview of “Oh to Be” (which is currently unreleased and available nowhere else), streaming from Kickstarter. YOU ARE THE FIRST TO HEAR IT!!
So much imagery to work with- one idea is to create a sock-puppet character who’s in love with a live-action woman and keeps getting rejected. Another is to feature us in rowboats in Central Park, looking for love in all the wrong places (possibly falling overboard?). If you are interested in being more involved on a conceptual level check the rewards to learn how you can make a guest appearance or help direct!
We’ve got world class artists eager to work with us, including Jake Nelson (who recently did a number of videos for Brooklyn band Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds), and Faculty Productions (who made this video for Sigur Ros). We hope to be filming by January and releasing the video by March, right on the heels of the record release, and in time to make a big splash in the summer of 2014. It is increasingly likely that video will be people’s first introduction to the band, the new record, and our music, so it’s time we had something we can hang our hats on.
Throughout the record and music video release, we’ll have a publicist and radio promoter working round the clock to help spread the word about Roosevelt Dime, which will help enormously to attract people to our new video, get more views, and increase our chances of going viral. To reprise an old classic, "...we just need a little kickstart, won't you find it in your heart."
As we write this, we're here in Seaside Lounge Studios in Brooklyn mixing the last track of Full Head of Steam, and it's by far the most cohesive and true recording of the sound we've been crafting since we formed the band. We're bursting at the seams to share this music with you, and the world. You've taken us this far, now help Take Roosevelt Dime to the Masses!
Risks and challenges
We like to think we've gotten pretty good at this whole writing and playing music thing. But holymoly is there a staggering amount of other work that goes into producing, printing, and promoting a record (not to mention booking and managing the band ourselves throughout the whole process).
From dealing with the art design and layout for the album, to CD printing and manufacturing, to lining up and working with the publicist, promoter, and videographer, there are just a ton of decisions to be made and moving parts to coordinate that go towards orchestrating a successful release campaign. So while we are targeting an official release date of 2-4-14 for the record, and early March for the video, it's possible that the timeline may shift as the pieces continue to come together. We have to prioritize a job well done over getting it done faster.
Making a music video that we can all get behind will no doubt have its challenges. We've worked together for over four years now and have learned to collaborate with all types of people in all types of ways, so although it may be hard at times to reconcile the band and the producers vision, we are very confident that ultimately, a truly great product will emerge.
For the rewards that are based around our touring schedule (like the postcards and the radio shout-outs), we plan on working them in as soon as we can. Depending on how many of them we need to fulfill, some may be received as late as summer 2014, but we'll try to make sure they're no later than that. If all goes well, then we should be incredibly busy around that time since the record will have blown up by then!
