Beware The Undermire! - Kickstarter Exclusive
If you thought Miremarsh was a deadly place, we dare you to set foot in the Undermire!
These haunted caverns lie deep below Miremarsh, and hold the promise of power and glory, as well as some horrible new dangers for your Bog Goblins.
But let’s take a moment to rewind and explain how the Undermire expansion came about, and exactly what it does to the game…
While the bulk of the art for the main game was done by the lovely Andres Martinez, towards the end of the design process we brought a second artist on board, the very talented Mary Safro.
Mary created the board art for the main game, and a few other remaining images, but then we decided to get started on some ideas for stretch goals. One of the most obvious was to add new locations, so Graham Davey our studio manager scribbled down a handful of potential hex titles for Mary to pick from, with a broadly underground theme.
Her first piece – the Fungus Forest – went down really well here in the office, so Mary carried on working through the list, coming back to it whenever she had some free time.
Before we knew it, 20 amazing pieces of art had appeared on the wall.
A New Setting
At this point we realised there was just about enough to cover the entire game board, and started to think that rather than just mixing these locations in with the original swampy ones (which you can still do of course), we could go further and create a distinct setting.
Authors Matt and Sam got to work deciding what each location should do, and picking the pieces that worked well as Quests. You’ll discover there’s lots of weird and spooky stuff going on. Not least the Dark Altar, where all dead Goblins are laid – the more there are, the harder the challenge becomes!
Now we’d embraced the idea of the Undermire, we wondered what creatures would live there, waiting to ambush those foolish Goblins. The first two are the Bat Swarm and the incredible Lure Fish, with more on the way…
Funny story – one of the potential titles was ‘Trog Cave’, meaning Troglodyte, but Mary misread Graham’s scruffy handwriting and painted a Frog Cave instead. We all thought it was really cool, and so the lair of the Frog King was born!
The Troglodyte idea will still feature in the form of a Trog Goblin!
A Whole New Board
Next, we decided to add in a completely new game board. This will be getting its own bespoke artwork, so you can feel completely immersed in the Undermire as you play!
The new board layout is quite different, with the starting location in the corner rather than the middle. This gave us loads more options for different routes and secret paths. It also means the Undermire board is distinctly harder – because each route to a Quest location is one hex further than on the main board.
The Undermire is a spooky, haunted place, and when a Bog Goblin dies, his spirit does not rest peacefully! Instead a Ghost Goblin appears, which then roams the caverns, moaning, wailing and generally annoying everyone!
There is a Ghost Goblin version of each of the Bog Goblins, each cast in translucent plastic:
How can I get it?
The Undermire Expansion Pledge (£75) gets you both the main game and the Kickstarter Exclusive Undermire, while the Goblin Chief Pledge (£100) offers even better value, adding the exclusive monster expansion and other stuff too!
Social Stretch Goal Added
We've just added our first stretch goal to allow us to add something awesome to the core box. Challenge Markers! These slimy warn out old boots allow you to mark which challenge you're currently on when trying to slay that dreaded monster, each colour coded to match your Goblin popper.
They'll come in coloured plastic and will be added to the core box game when we hit those goals, so please start liking and following and spreading the word.
