SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Donate in the next 4 days and our generous Board of Directors WILL MATCH YOUR DONATION, DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR, UP TO $5,000! Pledge before May 26th at 2:00pm and double your donation!
WOW WE MADE OUR GOAL! Thank you all who've supported us thus far! With your help we've made our goal of $10,000.
BUT WAIT! If we raise an extra $5,000 (a total of $15,000) in our final 5 days, we will add two additional Summer Series screenings at our most spectacular venue—Industry City in Sunset Park. Spread the word, encourage your friends to pledge, and let's get extra shows on top of our favorite venue!
Would you rather spend the summer cooped up indoors at some black box theater, or experience the latest indie films as the city unfurls beneath you? Start a night with canned commercials, or with live music by up-and-coming bands? Stream low-res movies alone in your room, or watch film glowing on a giant screen with hundreds of new friends?
In essence, do you think cinema should be a passive experience....
Well, Rooftop Films is offering you just that with its 19th annual Summer Series. We believe that your experience of a film should not be limited to merely watching a movie, so we curate unique events that combine great music, quality independent cinema, and some of the most beautiful locations that New York has to offer. By thinking beyond the screen, we help to bring communities together and change the way that film, music, art, and ideas interact with the city around us.
Now, what could make this experience even more exciting? How about saving a ton of money while helping to support a grassroots arts movement? Donate today and become a member with free access to every regularly priced Rooftop Films event in 2015.
What Your Support Means As a non-profit organization, ticket sales from our screenings account for less than 15% of our overall budget. Without the income generated through annual memberships and donations from our biggest fans, Rooftop Films can’t grow and bring the best of independent filmmaking to the rooftops, parks, beaches, and waterways near you.
That's great! But what films do I get to see? The 19th annual Summer Series kicks off Friday, May 29th at Industry City in Sunset Park, Brooklyn with a brand new slate of the most talked about short films from local and international filmmakers. The following night, Saturday, May 30th, we will head to the roof of The Old American Can Factory, in Gowanus, Brooklyn, to present Bob Byington’s charming off-beat comedy, 7 Chinese Brothers, starring Jason Schwartzman. David Sandberg will be in attendance opening night, Bob Byington and Jason Schwartzman will be in attendance on May 30th.
With a slate packed with feature films, documentaries, and some of the world’s best shorts programs, we’re sure to have something for everyone, and we can’t wait to introduce you to the best independent films you’ll see this year.
We have some unbelievable fiction feature films, including:
Also showing are Zachary Treitz’ Rooftop Films Edgeworx grantee Men Go To Battle, Joe Swanberg’s Digging for Fire, and more.
Rooftop also shows powerful, innovative and invigorating documentaries, and this year’s slate includes non-fiction discoveries from all across the world:
Other great docs include Kings of the Wind and Electric Queens, Spartacus and Cassandra, and Sam Klemke’s Time Machine, just to name a few.
We are also famous for our short film programs because we scour the world for the very best short movies being made. This summer we will be returning with new editions of our signature themed short film programs, including our sexy (but sometimes heart-breaking) Romantic Shorts, our New York Non-Fiction programs, our groundbreaking animation showcases, and many big thrillers, comedies, docs and dramas in small packages. As always, we will kick off the summer with an opening night full of unbelievably awesome shorts, including the NY Premiere of Kung Fury, the most anticipated short film of the year. If you don’t believe us, check out its outrageous trailer:

Risks and challenges
As a non-profit organization we will always face the challenge of relying on the support from our backers to sustain Rooftop Films. This Kickstarter project is not a means to an end. It is a stepping stone for us to grow and expand. And with that growth comes greater responsibility, challenges, and needs. We are a hard-working team of six year round and we work tirelessly to provide a unique experience for all who come to our shows. There is still work to be done and we are glad that you are on this journey with us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
