A MESSAGE FROM THE ROOFTOP FILMS STAFF:
Support Rooftop Films as we embark on our 22nd year of bringing spectacular and meaningful film and music events to the roofs, streets, parks, and waterways of New York City.
Do you want to sit at home alone streaming movies on your laptop, or do you want to meet up with hundreds of interesting people and together get wrapped up in a film glowing on a giant screen? Do you want to be hushed up in some boring black box, or do you want to hang out on the roof of a 100-year-old high school while the city churns below, the wide-open sky stretching out above? Do you want to get kicked out of the theater for the next seating, or do you want to hang out with the filmmakers at an after-party with free drinks? Do you want the same old passive movie experience, or do you want to be a part of something more?
WHO WE ARE
Rooftop Films is a Brooklyn based nonprofit whose mission is to engage diverse communities by showing independent films in amazing outdoor locations throughout New York City. We are best known for the Rooftop Films Summer Series, an annual, outdoor, summer-long film festival that showcases the best new independent and foreign films in the world on rooftops and in other scenic locations. That massive series features more than 100 new films in 15 different locations and attracts tens of thousands of attendees—and almost all of the planning and preparation for that series is done by 7 year-round employees who work their butts off all year long.
Even if that was all we did, we would still need your help. But we also do so much more..
Through the Rooftop Films Community Fund we offer equipment and our event production expertise at low rates and even free to artists, nonprofits, and community groups. These events include more than 50 additional, FREE, large scale partner events and community happenings in locations throughout NYC.
And through the Rooftop Filmmakers’ Fund, Rooftop works to foster talent in the independent filmmaking community by providing more than $200,000 worth of cash and services every year to help films get made—exhilarating, innovative, independent films like Obvious Child, Beasts of the Southern Wild, and Casting JonBenet.
In order for Rooftop to continue to serve our audience, filmmakers and support the broader cultural community all across New York City, year-round, we need YOU—the members of our community—to support all that we do. So please make a (tax deductible) contribution today!
NO ONE DOES WHAT WE DO
We at Rooftop strive to create events with meaning. More than a film festival, Rooftop Films screenings are innovative, once-in a lifetime film events. We bring films directly to communities across the city and create unique holistic events tying together the film, venue and live music.
WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS
As a small non-profit organization, Rooftop accomplishes a great deal with a small, passionate staff of 7 full time employees. Every penny we earn goes back into the Rooftop community and towards providing a quality experience for our artists, audience and members.
Because of you we are able to travel the city to present events on rooftops, in parks, and along waterways and to celebrate film, music, and spectacular locales.
Because of you we are able to support emerging filmmakers and connect them with new audiences across the city.
Because of you we are able to showcase the best new independent films in the world--like Menashe, The Big Sick, The Fits, Cameraperson, Tangerine, The Wolfpack, and many more.
And because of you we all get to explore hidden corners of the city together; from the top of the William Vale Hotel, 25 stories above Brooklyn, to the graffiti covered roof of New Design High School overlooking the Lower East Side.
Be a part of our community! Let’s create thousands of new moments together! Make a donation or become a member today and support Rooftop Films as we continue to create unforgettable events featuring the best in film, live music and culture to diverse communities. And your support of Rooftop will directly support the broader community of artists, filmmakers, musicians, schools and nonprofit organizations – the cultural and artistic community of NYC we all share.
THE SECOND ANNUAL ROOFTOP GALA
Date: Thursday, February 15. 6:30 PM-10:00 PM
Venue: St. Bart's Church: 325 Park Ave, New York, NY. 10022
Rooftop strives to make all of our events unique, and this year’s Gala will be as vibrant and inclusive as any of our past events. We will transform St. Bart’s Church on Park Avenue into a boisterous, celebratory, Rooftop-style party that brings together the brightest leaders and lovers of the film community. This year we will be honoring two of the most gifted and fearless filmmakers working in film today: Yance Ford, whose hauntingly intimate documentary Strong Island brought a fresh perspective to conversations about race and violence; and Sean Baker, who has been redefining realism in cinema for years with brilliant films like Starlet, Tangerine, and this year’s breakout, The Florida Project.
Thank you from all of us at Rooftop Films!
Risks and challenges
As a non-profit organization we will always face the challenge of relying on the support from our backers to sustain Rooftop Films. This Kickstarter project is not a means to an end; it is a stepping stone for us to grow and expand. And with that growth comes greater responsibility, challenges, and needs. We are a hard-working team of seven year round employees and we work tirelessly to provide a unique experience for all who come to our shows. There is still work to be done and we are glad that you are on this journey with us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
