Thank you all who've supported us thus far! With your help we raised more than $3,000 in the last day. If we raise an extra $3,000 (a total of $18,000) in our final 24 hours, we will add an additional screening at our most spectacular venue—Open Road Rooftop in the Lower East Side. Spread the word, encourage your friends to pledge, and let's get an extra show on top of our favorite venue!
50+ screenings - 12 outdoor locations - live music - after-parties - and much much more
Over the last 16 years, Rooftop Films has screened thousands of new, independently produced films in amazing scenic spots all across New York City. But we can’t do it without your help.
What’s that you say? But summer 2013 is so far away? It is our mission to make our events as enticing and unforgettable as possible and creating that experience is a 365 day a year job. Though summer feels far off we at Rooftop are well on our way in planning our next great season. Support Rooftop Films now so we can expand our events and continue to do screenings at our biggest and most popular venue--Open Road Rooftop.
What we do:
Our current work includes gathering thousands of submissions from filmmakers, seeking out new and exciting venues, and coordinating travel for our feature filmmakers from around the world. And of course we are busily doing what we do best, creating inventive engaging programs by not merely showing movies, but enhancing our screenings with--rock bands, steel drum orchestras, discussions, free food and drink, video installations, ventriloquists, dance parties, death metal, chess tournaments, live wrestling, swordplay, and even robots imported from around the world.
And once the summer does arrive, we are setting up events all over the city. At Rooftop we don’t screen in theaters but in unique urban spaces. These events are complicated endeavors: moving truckloads of equipment; setting up giant screens, laying down thousands of feet of cable; and shepherding thousands of people up and down stairs and in and out of unique spaces. And then, after a few spectacular hours, we take it all apart, load it back into our trucks and drive off into the night to get ready to do it all again the next day.
Why we do it:
As a non-profit, Rooftop does all of this with a small, passionate, dedicated staff. We are a family and we dedicate ourselves to creating a unique, special experience for you--our extended family. We want you to hear up and coming bands in unforgettable locations, see films you might never have heard about otherwise, and meet fellow audience members and hang with filmmakers at our after-parties. It is our mission to keep these shows and these experiences accessible to all, and that is why each year we add more free shows and keep our admission prices as low as possible for our ticketed events.
What can you do:
To create these experiences for you at the level that you expect from Rooftop (and we expect from ourselves) can be difficult and as we continue to keep our ticket prices low, our costs go up each and every year, and so we need YOUR support to keep the organization running.
In particular, we need your help so that we can continue to present shows at our most popular—but also most expensive—venue. The amazing Open Road Rooftop rests atop New Design High School in the Lower East Side and is truly a sight to behold. The space is huge—it takes up an entire city block—and it offers gorgeous wraparound views of the entire city. Best of all, the entire roof is decorated with graffiti murals produced by the students in collaboration with legendary street artists.
There is no cooler place to watch a movie in all of New York City. But, unfortunately it has become considerably more expensive to put on screenings at this venue. Without support from our fans, we might have to discontinue our events in this amazing location.
And we don’t want that to happen. That is why we have put together this Kickstarter campaign. Of course, everyone who contributes is eligible for some great rewards, including packages from some of the outstanding distributors and organizations that we work with, as well as discounted Rooftop Films 2013 memberships and many more unique options.
- For as little as $60 you can gain access to EVERY regularly priced Rooftop Films Summer Series event. That’s a lot of great music, films, beer and fun, at an incredible price.
- For $500 you will get a Rooftop membership and also have your name on one of the chairs at our venue—Rooftop Style! Our in-house artist will graffiti paint your name on one of our classic folding chairs, so that when folks sit down in that chair they will be reminded of your support for Rooftop.
- If you give $500, we will treat you to a private dinner with one of our talented filmmakers. The last time we offered this prize, one of our donors got to have dinner with Lena Dunham (before she was quite so famous), so help out Rooftop Films and you can get to know one of the up-and-coming talents whose work we’ve premiered.
About Rooftop Films:
Since 1997, Rooftop Films has grown from a single screening on a roof in the East Village into one of the most dynamic film institutions in the world. As a non-profit organization, our mission is to engage and inspire diverse communities through film. We fund new movies by emerging independent filmmakers, teach classes to budding young filmmakers, and enable dozens of screenings with equipment rentals at low-cost. And, most importantly, we have expanded our screenings to all five boroughs of New York (and beyond). Each summer we attract massive crowds and widespread media attention by showing amazing new movies to tens of thousands in spectacular outdoor spaces. Rooftop Films is a vital support system for independent filmmakers, and our reach and ambition have grown with each successive year.

Risks and challenges
As a non-profit organization we will always face the challenge of relying on the support from our backers to sustain Rooftop Films. This Kickstarter project is not a means to an end. It is a stepping stone for us to grow and expand. And with that growth comes greater responsibility, challenges, and needs. We are a hard-working team of six year round and we work tirelessly to provide a unique experience for all who come to our shows. There is still work to be done and we are glad that you are on this journey with us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
