Starstorm Report #19: The Way Forward

Hey all, another update just in time for the weekend!

Ever since the Kickstarter campaign ended, we've been fleshing out our plans for the coming months. Because this campaign has been such a tremendous success, there are a lot of new things lying on the table. Coming up with a plan to get all of these new features, and all the new content, out into the hands of our community has taken us a little longer than we had hoped for, but we're ready to share our plans with you now!

But first it's time for some good news - we have received the funds from this campaign, and after doing a lot of counting, we are happy to announce that we have passed the $415,000 mark! That means that a fifth character will be included in the Starstorm line-up! Right now we don't even know what this character is going to be... But we have loads of cool ideas and will be doing some thinking about this over the coming weeks. Once we've got some concepts sketched up, we'll let you know!

So, let's take a look at our plans for the future! We've got quite a lot of stuff ahead of us, and as we have a rather small development team it's going to take us a long time to get all these Starstorm features shipped. As you can see in the roadmap below, we currently expect that the last couple of features won't be ready for another 12 months or so. Things might go a little faster than we expect them to, or they might take a little longer, but we'll keep you up to date on how things are progressing!

Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind when reading through the roadmap below is that we want to make all these features available to you as soon as possible. Many of the features, like the spectator mode and custom game modes for instance, will first be released without all the extra features, and they'll be fleshed out over time.

As you can see, we're aiming to have the first version of the replay system ready before the end of the year, and the first set of Custom Games features might even make it into the release version of the game before the end of the month! However, spectator mode won't be fully finished until Q3 2013, and we'll be expanding the Custom Games feature even longer than that. We'll continue to add more functionality to those features as the months progress, and will be taking your feedback into account to make sure we keep going in the right direction.

Outside of all the big, technical features for the game, we will also be working on new characters and the new Starstorm map. Ted McPain is already coming along well, and we'll be moving on to work on Sentry X-58 after that. At the same time we'll also be kicking off development of the new map. That is really going to take a couple of months of work and take up a lot of time for our designers and our artists, so we'll not be able to get the remaining two characters out as fast as we would like at the same time. The remaining two characters will follow after the map goes live.

That about covers our plans for the coming year. Ofcourse, there are lots of things that will change as time goes by, and we'll be doing many additional things outside of the headlines above. As we've said before... we'll keep you updated! If you have any questions, just let me know and I'll try to clear things up!

Before we all head into the weekend, I'd also like to give a special shout-out to Happion Labs. As you have probably noticed, your payment for this Kickstarter campaign didn't go straight to us, but was sent to Happion Labs instead. Without their help, Starstorm would have never even been possible! They're currently working on a game called Energy Hook, which quite frankly, is pretty awesome! You can check out their work over here, and it would be especially cool if you could help them get their game onto Steam by voting on their Greenlight project.

Give it a "Thumbs up" if you like what you see!

For now, have a great weekend and don't forget to ronmapls.

- Robin

Regarding the rematch: Couldn't you bring the (random) players _of each team_ back to a lobby after the match? That way they could either leave the lobby or stay and play another game with same players.

@Phoenixio, our current plans for Foxy require a little less work than Skree would, so it is easier for us to work on that alongside the new map. As we flesh out our plans further, we might still decide to switch the characters around again.

@Kris V, we are removing the Rematch button because it causes a lot of games to start with less than six players present, which means it will take longer for all of them to fill up. By encouraging all players to re-enter the matchmaking system, we can fill out matches faster, which in the future might help us refine the matchmaking experience in general. Right now, I'm not 100% sure whether you'll remain grouped, but I imagine that is something we want to allow.

@Julián Quijano, the skins will not be the Cakemantium skins, but other ones. Not all skins have been treated to a second skin yet, so some of them might be related to that ;) The surprises aren't real "surprises" per se, but will mostly be features and improvements not mentioned here.

@Ahdok, we're not sure yet. We have plenty of cool ideas ourselves, but doing another competition would be fun as well. The character is still a really long way off though, so we'll decide once we get closer to it.

@Radu Andi, the artbook is still slated for this year :)

Can't wait for AFK kicking and matchmaking chat. Also, new nauts are awesome too :D

      What about the Art Book?

      fifth champion!

Is there going to be a design comp?

AWESOME, there will be indeed a 5th character in the starstorm :D

      Quick questions:

      > The new skins refers to the 2 of the cakemantium tier or are another ones. If it's the second: where we will know something about the cakemantium skins? And their statues! thanks!

      > a hint about the surprises? :000

      > A little good-hearted concern: Digital G is a lot less "customized" than the other Starstorm skins! It's a pity ):
I'm just in love with Ghost Leon. Between that little flaw and the latest nerf on Froggy, I'm maining Leon now!

Just in love with the roadmap anyway ;)
It will be an awesome year for Awesomenauts!

Why are you guys taking out the Rematch button?
Also, I was thinking, what about a sort of function that would allow you to stay partied with friends after the match? Like your team is brought to a post-game lobby.

Glad to see that Sentry isn't far off!

So the fourth Naut will hit the game before the third? Weird plan, but I don't mind much. It's just strange considering Skree looks more advanced in term of concepts than the Foxy Naut.

      AFK kicking ... Yes!!!!!!!
