You Can’t Escape Lithuania is a feature film about a fictional version of Romas Zabarauskas, a gay filmmaker from Lithuania.
Romas helps a good friend, an actress, Indre, to escape Lithuania after she murders her mother and steals her money. Romas also takes his hot Mexican boyfriend Carlos along for the ride.
On the road, Romas gives Indre an ultimatum: if she doesn’t agree to perform in one last experimental film, he will turn her over to the police…
YCEL is a queer art film inspired by Fassbinder, Douglas Sirk and Dostoyevsky.
Lithuania is a tiny Eastern European country with approximately 3 million inhabitants. It’s a country of spectacular landscapes, a rapidly growing economy, and people who dream big. The bad news is that our politicians are increasingly pushing a homophobic agenda. Since 2010, a controversial Protection of Minors law, similar to Russia’s anti-gay legislation, has been in force.
FILMMAKER Romas Zabarauskas
Romas' films Porno Melodrama (30 min.) and We Will Riot (79 min.) tackle the subjects of homophobia, neo-nationalism and corruption. They premiered at the Berlinale in 2011 and the Moscow Film Festival in 2013 respectively, and have been showing around the world ever since.

Risks and challenges
$20,000 is only the initial amount of money we need—with it, and with all of your online love, we will engage private sponsors and apply to different state funds to collect the whole budget. That will be our main challenge. We will do it: we produced our previous feature, We Will Riot, in exactly the same way, and it was a bigger and more complicated production between New York and Vilnius (Lithuania). Finally, if it all goes to pieces and we don’t find enough money, we’ll make the film anyway—compromising our production values, but not our ideas.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
