The only NYC festival dedicated to new and classic films from a country praised for its recent groundbreaking cinema.
Why a Romanian Film Festival @ Lincoln Center?
For the past 10 years, the Romanian New Wave has enjoyed the highest critical acclaim. It gained the most prestigious recognition at the Cannes Film Festival, including a Palme D’Or in 2007 for Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. The New York Times published ample, rave reviews about an impressive number of Romanian films (you can read here a feature by A.O. Scott), and Romanian filmmakers such as Cristian Mungiu, Cristi Puiu, Corneliu Porumboiu, Radu Muntean and Cristian Nemescu have become reference names for art cinema lovers worldwide.
The Romanian Film Festival in NYC began in 2006 as an acknowledgment of this cinematic effervescence and with the aim of providing an overview of the best Romanian filmmaking each year and of introducing American audiences to landmark films rarely seen in the US. Under the leadership of Corina Şuteu, with Mihai Chirilov as artistic director and Oana Radu as festival manager, the festival has been growing by leaps and bounds, attracting a large, dedicated following, and building a strong reputation in the media and among film professionals. After a very successful five-year collaboration with Tribeca Cinemas, the Romanian Film Festival was invited in 2011 to be part of the distinguished lineup of events hosted by the Film Society of Lincoln Center (FSLC,) becoming an annual series alongside established programs such as Rendez-vous with French Cinema, the New York Jewish Film Festival, or Spanish Cinema Now. At the same time, the Romanian Film Festival at Lincoln Center was extended into a 7-day film feast offering a rich blend of features, documentaries and shorts, along with special events and a variety of opportunities to meet Romanian filmmakers, actors and industry professionals.
Despite the festival’s growing success and recognition, its survival is jeopardized by recent political and cultural policy changes in Romania – which impacted the mission, status and budget of the Romanian Cultural Institute, which co-sponsored the previous editions of the festival. In response, the team of the festival set up the Romanian Film Initiative, which, in cooperation with the Film Society of Lincoln Center, aim to reinvent the festival, keep alive its playful, experimental spirit, and continue to help Romanian films make waves in NYC and beyond. But without your support the festival is in danger of disappearing! This year in particular, we need your help to make it happen and close the budget gap.
WE NOW WANT TO KEEP THIS SUCCESS STORY ALIVE AND MAKE IT A
PERMANENT FIXTURE OF
MAKING WAVES 2012, a Festival of New Romanian Cinema and the 7th edition of a Romanian film season in NYC, is set to take place at Lincoln Center from November 29 to December 5 under the auspices of the Film Society and the Romanian Film Initiative. We are planning an inventive program consisting not only of the most compelling recent Romanian productions (feature, documentary and short films) but also of retrospectives of Romanian filmmakers, special programs, panels, including a series of conversations on the shifts that affect the arts and culture in Central and Eastern Europe.
WHAT WE HAVE:
- Partial funding;
- A prestigious presenting partner, the Film Society of Lincoln Center;
- Great venues in the heart of Manhattan: Film Society's Walter Reade Theater and the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center;
- The support of most prestigious film festival in Romania – the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF);
- The amazing talent and support of the Romanian New Wave filmmakers;
- Major Works of classic Romanian cinema, never shown in the United States, many of them in new prints;
- A dedicated team of top programmers, curators and cultural professionals.
WHAT WE NEED:
At least $20,000 to keep having the Romanian Film Festival where it belongs: in the heart of NYC, as a week-long event at Lincoln Center, in December, when Romania celebrates its national day.
The resources to bring guests from Romania (directors, actors, producers, and critics) and to organize great events: Q&A sessions, panels and get-togethers.
HOW YOUR MONEY WILL BE USED:
Your pledges will be used to bring the festival to life again in 2012! They will help us cover:
- Plane tickets and accommodation for the Romanian artists and industry guests;
- Producing flyers, a festival brochure, posters and other promotional materials;
- Organizing the now traditional opening party, Romanian style;
- Organizing industry events, panels, etc;
- Promoting the festival in NY and national media.
We still need at least $20,000 to make the festival happen this year. If we receive more support, it will allow us to have even more guests and special events.In exchange for your support, we have prepared rewards including screening tickets, festival passes, copies of the AperiTIFF yearly publication in English on contemporary Romanian cinema, DVDs, VIP passes for Romanian parties and events, meetings with filmmakers and stars and so much more.
Each contribution will count to keep the Romanian film spirit alive in New York City!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Our big challenge in making the festival happen is funding itself. This project aims to continue and reinvent a project which the team has been developing successfully for 6 years, and whose continuation has been jeopardized by the current political context. We are therefore reorganizing and reinventing it, but making use of what are its strengths – its team and its experience and expertise in making such an event happen, the partnership with the Film Society of Lincoln Center, the investment and support of the Romanian leading filmmakers, and last but not least the audience the festival has built, which we also aim to involve in this Kickstarter campaign. We have managed to attract other funding, and the organization of the festival is already on the way, so a successful Kickstarter campaign will secure enough funds for the new festival to make waves. Again.
MORE than welcomed. We are looking for support from all movie lovers around the world.
If you spread the word (on facebook and other social media platforms for example) it would be of great help to us :)
