About this project
Thank you everyone for making Rolo a success!
We are Ben and Cheryl - two humble backpackers from Berkeley, CA who just love traveling.
On a recent adventure across Europe we had this radical idea that packing could be less of a hassle.
Its something we all do: check in, get comfortable, take our things out, change clothes - and when its time to leave everything goes back in the bag.
But why? Its because of the unpack.
We brainstormed a new way to pack - a way where you will never have to unpack again.
Rolo seperates your clothing into clear transparent mesh sections. Your clothing will stay where you left it, wherever you go.
The attached hanging hook allows you to hang it up at your destination. Rolo becomes a portable wardrobe, giving immediate access to exactly what you want.
No more digging in bags, no more pulling everything out to find something. Its all right here in front of you. When you want to leave you can simply roll it up and go.
Rolo was engineered to keep your clothing flat maximizing storage space, and minimizing wrinkled garments.
When it is rolled up Rolo is the exact same size as a bedroll, allowing you to store your clothing on the outside of your backpack. This frees up the inside of the backpack for other things.
We wanted to make it versatile. Hang it, attach it to backpack, or put it inside a rolling suitcase; Rolo will keep everything organized wherever you go.
The Story of Rolo
We were backpacking in Europe and we stumbled upon this really neat toiletry organizer for keeping your soaps and toothpaste together.
This little organizer soon helped us organize our phone cords, medicines, and all of the little junk that used to be all over our backpack. There had to be something like this for clothing - right?
After searching everywhere, and even running a patent search we turned up nothing. Nope, not one.
Cheryl made our first prototype with materials from the local fabric store. With some hard work and a little time we had a real working design.
We found a local manufacturer right here in San Francisco, they want to help us, but to meet the minimum order requirements we need your help.
Your pledge will help us create the first official production run of Rolo travel bags. You can help make this dream a reality. Be the first to have this new travel accessory and have more time to experience the pleasures of travel.
Made in America
We found an awesome manufacturer based right here in San Francisco.
This picture was taken 10 minutes from the manufacturers office. We know we can produce the best quality when we make it locally and we won't settle for anything but the best.
Rolo is going to be made out of high quality ballistic nylon or Cordura brand fabric. It is lightweight and strong. The mesh is high quality nylon hex mesh and we are working closely with the manufacturer to ensure durability. The zippers are YKK brand and everything is manufactured in America.
Our Production Plan
Rolo is following the common business plan as laid out in South Park:
Step 1. Collect Underpants!
Step 2. ?
Step 3. Profit!
Well, its actually a little bit more complicated than that -
Your donations will help us purchase our first production batch of travel bags from a manufacturer here in San Francisco. They have informed us that they can begin manufacturer as early as January or February 2014. The manufacture process will take 4 to 6 weeks, and then we will rent a warehouse and have the product shipped there. We will then visit the warehouse for a quality inspection. If everything is good, we will give them to a shipping company who will send them all over the world.
International shipping is a challenge. Even though Rolo weighs 1 pound, and has dimensions of 17 inches by 3 inches by 3 inches it will still cost around $30 to send it to Europe. We are searching for creative solutions to curb this cost - there might even be a way to send a large shipment there first and then distribute locally. If anyone has any neat ideas please send them along!
Your donation is the spark that will ignite this dream. We really hope you join us.
Risks and challenges
We have developed a thorough plan for fulfillment. Our manufacturer is local and will source the materials. We have a price quote, materials selected and their continual support. We have a shipping company standing by ready to ship the finished product out to everyone. We are still working out a RMA strategy, and will be available via email to answer any questions or concerns.
Risks that we can foresee are possible material shortages, incorrect sample specifications, or other manufacturing setbacks. Shipping is also a complicated hurtle. There is Value Added Tax (VAT), customs duty fees, shipping costs, warehousing costs, and shipping costs - but a combination of quality research and an experienced shipping company will help us navigate this treacherous landscape. If there are shortages or shipping issues the worst thing that will happen is it will add additional time to the fulfillment period. We are committed to this, even if we have to eat additional cost to get it out the door.
We have a real working prototype, a company, a provisional patent, a trademark, and have taken all the necessary steps to ensure smooth execution of our plan.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The shipping costs look kind of confusing.
We structured it so that $10 is always included for shipping as a base cost (for domestic shippers).
If you are international you will add $20 to the base to make a total of $30 to cover the shipping to you.
So to be clear if you are INTERNATIONAL you will ONLY pay $30 for shipping - flat.
If you are domestic you will only pay $10.
It looks kind of wonky because of the way we structured it to include shipping costs for both domestic and international. Kickstarter only lets you check a box that says "Add International" and then specify a flat price for the whole world.
In the video we show a loadout, it depends on the persons size and the thickness of the clothing, but I would say 2-3 pairs of shorts/pants, 3-4 shirts, 4 underwear, 4 pairs socks
Big clothing like jackets, phat jeans, and hoodies will use up more space.
Our prototype weighs 1.3 pounds but we are going to work to get the weight to 1 pound for the final version.
The dimensions are 17 inches long, by 3 inches by 3 inches when rolled up with nothing inside.
This is an all or nothing campaign, so we need to fund or Rolo will not be made.

Rolo is made out of waterproof materials, but the sides are open. If you are trekking in a rainy area or deep wilderness you will want to purchase a Dry Bag to surround and protect Rolo. We were going to offer one as an additional reward, but logistics and shipping costs deterred us for Kickstarter. In the future it will probably be standard.
