About this project
Roll Saga Baseball is a tabletop baseball game that merges statistical baseball strategy and action. The traditional elements of tabletop baseball reside in game play as the manager builds, manages, and plays a team in the field using player stats, but the game mat transforms into any stadium to bring that ballpark's added dimensions to the game. And not just players and managers make the game super-realistic, but coaches, player agents, and umpires are used to add multiple layers of depth and strategy.
It is playable by 1 or 2 players who take on the roles of owner and manager of their own baseball organization consisting of all 40 players of the full roster. There are many different levels of game play to allow the manager or managers to choose the amount of time that they want to invest in seeing a game, series, or season to its conclusion.
Watch the below video for a 2 minute visual look at Roll Saga.
All Rival, Division, League and World Champion Pledge levels receive all unlocked Stretch Goals.
The following are the core components that come with all box sets:
1 28 x 28 inch Premium Game Mat
All 30 Teams & Player Tokens (Every player & team) of the 2014 or 2015 season (over 1,200 player tokens!)
1 Pitching Pad and ball token
2 Clear Scoreboard Stands and Marker
1 Pitch Count Strip
18 Pitching Cards
10 Scorecards and 20 Line-up Cards
1 Official Rule Book
Please note: the 20 Line-up cards can be optioned out for 2 erasable line-up Cards for use with the scoreboard marker.
No matter where you're playing your game - in Chicago, L.A., Boston, or any one of the 30 Major League ballparks - your field converts easily. This not only looks good, but it further enhances your gaming experience by using accurate wall distances and heights so that your game is true to the stadium you're in. A home run hit in one ballpark to left field might not be a home run in another park at the same distance.
All 30 major league ballparks are available for selection in this Kickstarter campaign (Please see the Pledge Levels section below for more information).
Game Mat Material
With a strong and flexible rubber backing and a stain resistant polyester top, it easily rolls up and tucks away inside your Roll Saga Game Box / Carrying Case until you're ready to play again.
Real and modern players are used to authenticate your experience and bring the excitement of real-world baseball to your living-room, office, or wherever you decide to play. Not only is each player represented by a token on the field, but these players can gain experience as you play them and develop under your ownership and management. Just like in real life, players can gain new skills, have slumps, or get on hot streaks. But if you don't want that depth of play, just use them as they come with their current and modern stats and abilities already in place.
Roll Saga Player Types:
Starting, Relief, and Closing Pitchers
Catchers & All Position Players
A general description of how each one of these players is used in Roll Saga is listed below in the Game Play section.
All box sets come with every team and player on that team (40-man roster). That's 30 teams and 1200 players! Plus, each team comes with 4 to 6 coaches (depending on the team) and 1 manager token. That means you get a total of 1350 to 1380 individual player tokens that can be paced on the field and represent the true player, coach, or manager.
How Games Are Played - A General Overview
Games in Roll Saga Baseball are played just like games in true-life baseball. Game players act as Owners, General Managers, and Managers (OGMs) of baseball teams that consist of a full team roster of 40 players.
Each OGM performs the necessary pre-game preparations like selecting a batting line-up (batting order) and choosing what starting, relief, and closing pitchers that they want to have in the game. As each player comes up to bat, his player token is placed into the batter's box at home plate. The next batter in line after that batter would be placed in the on-deck circle.
With a batter in the batter's box, the opposing team's OGM would then control his pitcher on the mound by selecting certain types of pitches to throw, targeting the locations of those pitches (according to each individual pitches movement), and rolling 3 six sided dice to determine the success or failure of the pitching action.
Each roll is augmented by that particular pitcher's pitching ability (PIT), like '+3' for example, that would be added to the roll to increase the overall sum of the total. Pitchers, just like all other players, can have special skill-sets (like Pitching Under Pressure or Endurance) that can further augment plays and increase the pitcher's overall game performance.
The batter (the OGM playing with the team at-bat) decides to swing, let it go (not swing) or bunt. If he decides to swing, 3 six sided dice are rolled to determine the hit success or failure and, if hit, what type of hit (grounder, hot grounder, line drive, hard line drive, or fly ball results). If a hit is made, another roll is enacted using 3 six sided dice to determine the direction and speed (power) of the hit.
Just as pitchers have a PIT ability that is added to their pitch roll, batters use their batting ability (BAT) which is expressed as a 'plus' to augment their 'to hit' roll. Additionally, batters have power ratings (POW) that are used to determine how much extra a hit can travel in feet (like, +50', for example).
And just as pitchers, and all other player positions, there are many different skill-sets that can be possessed by a batter (like Clutch Hitting or Place Hitting).
Every single action, bar none, of baseball is accurately replicated in Roll Saga Baseball through a precise and fluid game mechanic true to the game of baseball.
Each pitcher has his own repertoire - his own arsenal - that's based on his real-world knowledge. If he knows how to throw it in real-life, he can throw it in Roll Saga under your management. There are 17 Pitch Cards: From 2-Seam Fastballs to the elusive and dynamic Japanese Shuuto. They're all there and ready for you to use in game play. Just select the cards that correspond to the pitcher's arsenal that you have on the mound, decide where you want to throw it, and let it go. Three easy steps: Grip (choose a pitch), Set (target a zone), and Release (roll the dice).
Note: For a complete gallery of all the pitch cards, please scroll down to the Gallery section at the end of this project description.
Batting and Base Running
Bat for power, hit for speed, or bunt. Let it go or swing. The choice is yours. The options that a real batter faces are the same options and techniques you'll use in Roll Saga. Have your runner play off base and go for the steal on a pitch. Each player token illustrates that particular player's running speed just as his skill-sets reflect what running skills - like stealing - that he may have.
In Roll Saga, hitters and pitchers don't get all the glory! Position players are accurately rated on their proficiency in the field as well, so how and where you use them in your franchise can make all of the difference. And not only are position players graded according to their fielding ability, but also their throwing ability. Additionally, fielders, like all players, can have special skill sets which set them apart from other players. A fielder may have the skill of Range Right, for example, that gives him pluses when fielding balls to his right in the infield. Or, he may have the skill of Start Double Play which gives him extra points when starting a double play maneuver.
Managing (Creation, Management, and Innovation)
Take charge of a team and use your wit and creativity to take your club to the top. You'll have a blast having the same options that managers, general managers, and owners have in the big leagues.
And trading, signing, sending-down, calling-up, or drafting players are not just all of the powers that you'll have. Your management and ownership powers will extend even beyond the normal in-game setting as you might be faced with pre-game and post-game occurrences like player troubles or injuries that are based on any players true life characteristics and history of injury.
Not only can you manage real pre-existing teams and players whose abilities, skill-sets, and traits are based on the real player, you can also create them. Roll Saga has been designed for easy player, non-player, team, league, and stadium creation.
Coaches also have player tokens that represent the real coach and come with each team. Coaches can be used to improve players performances when in slumps as well as harness the talent of created players. Just as all other players, coaches have ability ratings that determine their success rates when coaching.
Umpires and Umpire Calls
Umpires are used in Roll Saga just as they are in real baseball. Each has his own set of ratings that determine increased likelihoods of a call being in favor of the offense or defense. Any time that an umpire call is needed, a single black die (the umpire die) is rolled.
Player Agents and Transactions
When as a manager you decide to trade players and procure other ones that are available per their contract, you'll have to not only deal with another owner/manager, but also with each individual player's agent. And each player's agent is rated with their own abilities so negotiating a salary or contract with one player may be a lot easier than another.
But remember, Roll Saga has been designed to be pliable to the level of game-depth that you want to play. You can have as much or as little control as you desire. Don't want to play every play or focus on the details? Don't. But if you do, you can - every single one.
Watch the below video for an an overview of how to play Roll Saga Baseball at the Master Level (using pitch-by-pitch mode).
Note: The Print and Play file is for demo play only and does not contain the full field, rosters or other components. It contains a demo field, player tokens, pitcher tokens, pitcher cards, pitching pad, scoreboard, quick reference sheet, depth charts and all of the players tokens game 6 between Boston and St. Louis of the 2013 World Series.
In Roll Saga, there are many ways to play: from advanced levels which involve deep strategy to faster games full of non-stop action.
Every single player ability, skill-set, characteristic, and trait is formulated from the real players statistical data and history. From his performance in fielding (catching and throwing) to how fast he runs and how far he has the power of hitting.
Many times a player's performance is directly related to the manager's ability or operation constraints placed upon him. So we rate players according to extensive mathematical algorithms that tell us what a player is capable of doing in any given situation rather than just what he did in a particular time frame. And it is up to your skill as a manager to use the player's abilities to take your team - or any team - to the top.
However, we also make available simulation stats that can be used to replay a season or time frame. These are based upon what the player did during a particular time frame and can be used to replay games or seasons.
Even though all Roll Saga Baseball Box Sets come with all the teams and players in the American big leagues, there are expansion packs available to enhance the gaming experience through added layers of realism.
What are Stadium Expansion Packs?
Stadium Expansion Packs come with everything needed to transform your game mat into any major league stadium. And they also come with colored player tokens and a team portfolio for the year designated. Not only for looks, these transformations put the stadium's accurate dimensions in play for your games.
Stadium Expansion Packs are individual packs for any of the 30 ballparks. You simply choose a ballpark and year (2014 or 2015 for this Kickstarter campaign) or just specify the team name and year (2014 or 2015) and you'll receive the stadium's transformation kit, 12 player token stands in that team's color, the replica scoreboard for the stadium, and the Team Folio (for the year that you've selected) - a booklet that contains depth charts, rotation lists, player performance ledgers, and other franchise data (by year) needed to run a big league operation.
What comes in the Rivals Box Set:
All core components (see Core Box Components section above) plus 2 Stadium Expansion Packs: choose any 2 Stadiums from any of the 30 major league ballparks of 2014/2015.
What comes in the Division Box Set:
All core components (see above) plus 5 Stadium Expansion Packs: choose any 5 Stadiums from any of the 30 major league ballparks of 2014/2015
The Roll Saga Rule Book contains precise and accurate directions for play as well as invaluable resources to help you manage your team on and off the field.
Please note that it is not 100% complete. It is in the 'Release Candidate' stage of development which means that it is 95% complete but still under review for error and might be missing sections and contain obvious flaws.
To view the Rule Book, click the link below:
Since the creation of this Kickstarter campaign we've updated the player tokens to also show the player skills as well as the at-bat simulation statistics (used for faster game plays - please see Levels of Play above).
The team name has been moved to a section hidden while the token is in its token stand which is in team color. This allows for visual uniformity if a player is traded to another team. But the team where he originally played that year can be referenced by sliding the token out of the stand.
We chose Kickstarter as our first release platform because we felt confident that we'd be able to reach a greater audience than we could on our own. We're a small shop, so we don't have the budget for extensive marketing or advertising campaigns. However, what we lack in finances, we make up in passion and dedication!
"We need support from backers on Kickstarter to help us get the game mats that are such an integral component of the game. The material for the game mat is expensive in small quantities, but with your support, we can order in bulk and get the price to a feasible number so that we can bring this project to life!"
The game mats are 28 by 28 inches in size and are made of open cell rubber with a polyester face. Essentially, it's the same material that is used for high quality mouse pads.
We considered going with other materials for the game mat, but nothing looks as good as this material. Plus, it is durable, flexible, light-weight, washable, and seamless. It is tremendously better than the chip board used in traditional board games. And it really immerses the player in the aspects of the ballpark when playing the game.
The Roll Saga Team is made of two full-time developers (who live, eat, and breathe Roll Saga) and two part-timers (who will one day become full-time employees so that we can continue to produce great expansions for Roll Saga!)
If you'd like, you can browse our website to get more information. We're also on most of the major social media channels, so please feel free to stop in to have a look, ask a question, or just say hello!

Risks and challenges
The estimated delivery date is November of 2015, but please keep in mind that this is an estimate. Also, please be aware that in some parts of the world backers may receive their box set ahead of or behind others.
Roll Saga Baseball is 95% complete, so the chance of anything occurring to delay shipment of your box set (including the Ultimate Box Set (the World Champion Pledge)) is very unlikely. However, if you are requesting the 2015 season of teams instead of the 2014 season, then the estimated delivery date will be January of 2016: This gives us enough time to ensure that all player statistics, abilities, skills, and traits are accurate following the close of the regular season on October 4, 2015.
We will refund your pledge within 60 days of the campaign ending date. If you request a refund after this initial 60 day period, please note that we will refund your pledge minus the Kickstarter and processing fees which is non-refundable after 60 days.
Also, please be aware that if we've already started packaging your box set for delivery, then a refund will not be possible.
However, if we are unable to deliver any agreed game component, then we'll refund that amount in entirety - including any and all fees.
We will use PayPal as our fee and payment processing platform (for its extra layers of security) and all funding is based on the USD.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Please note that if you do not log in and confirm your pledge within 8 weeks of our notification to confirm your pledge via email, we will consider the pledge abandoned and we will either refund or ship on a per case basis.
