A manifesto about disruptive innovation and the cloud revolution.

Introduction

Food trailers swiping credit cards on their smart phones. Arab revolutionaries toppling dictators with Twitter and Facebook. And entrepreneurs running their entire businesses from an iPad. We are writing this manifesto to explore an exciting world propelled by disruptive innovation.

We love technology. For some, it is simply a tool kit for problem solving, but for us it goes much deeper than that. Technology tells a story that helps us understand where we’re going, and more importantly why we’re going there.

This manifesto is a door opener, not an authoritative answer. We love the idea of asking more questions than we answer.

We want to shed light on these abstract ideas by using concrete examples from our work and the work of others to introduce you to some very powerful and fundamental changes in the way the world works.

Embracing Disruption is the act of embracing the ultimate question: "Is there a better way of solving this problem?"

As we explore this world together, we hope to contextualize what brought us here.

What Makes us Think:

  • Is disruptive innovation safe?
  • What the hell is the cloud?
  • Are we really solving meaningful problems?
  • What are the technology startups chasing?
  • What makes the Internet so amazing?
  • Will going Mobile eventually make technology invisible?

Goal

Our goal is simple: to write an awesome manifesto that is accessible and available to everyone.

We are writing this manifesto to inspire dreamers, artists, and challengers of the status quo. We hope to raise more questions than we answer, while exploring the underlying philosophy behind the technological revolution around us.

Funding Overview

We are excited about this project. We are setting the barrier to ship this manifesto pretty low (at $5k) but once we get there will make an electronic copy of the manifesto free to download. So how does this work exactly? Well, we believe that the manifesto should be freely available to anyone who is interested in reading it. Sure we want financial support for our work long term so we are using a hybrid model for this project. This means that long-term there will be a for-purchase print copy of the manifesto available as well as a for-purchase copy of the manifesto in eBook stores such as the Amazon Kindle Store, but a free edition of the manifesto in PDF, HTML, and ePub format will be available as well. This way the information if freely available to all, but the polished and more convenient forms of the manifesto distributed through stores will be used to support us.

By backing this project, you are helping us deliver a manifesto about the web that is freely available to anyone willing to download and read it. How cool is that?

Timing

We will get started on the manifesto as soon as the project is fully funded.

We will complete the manifesto by March 1st, 2013. Our goal is to hold a launch party for the manifesto the same week as South By Southwest Interactive (SXSWi), here in Austin, Texas. Depending on your contribution level, you could be joining us (check out the reward levels for more details).

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

This is our first manifesto. So, the biggest risks associated with this project are related to delivering on our promise. Though writing this manifesto is well within our abilities (we are seriously excited about this project). We both have experience writing in the form of blog posts, articles for magazines, and preparing presentations.

But, we understand that you are taking a risk in trusting us to deliver. Fully funding this project will enable us to hire a good editor and dedicate the time required to meet our deadlines.

We will minimize this risk by keeping the conversation going. You will get updates on progress, and depending on your contribution level, you may influence the outcome of the manifesto (see rewards). We are confident that we are setting realistic goals for this project and we cannot wait to get started on it! We think you will love it.
