What happens when a talented artist and a skilled craftsman come together? The chance to reinvent a classic, holiday genre with a fresh look in a timeless process. Peter Dunham & Linnea Gits of Uusi are the artists, and Bruno Rohner of Rohner Letterpress is the craftsman whose sought-after, Chicago printing press would like to see this elegant yuletide calendar make its way to your home this holiday season.
The advent calendar was originally inspired by the beautiful, handmade shingles covering an old building found by Peter in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
Recreated by the artists as a Swiss chalet dropped deep within a peaceful forest, this
humble structure took on an enchanting quality perfect for celebrating
the magic of the Christmas season. Each window hides an illustrated holiday treat or character. From the gift bearing bear (pun intended) behind the chalet's rooftop window...
...down to the final Christmas Eve reveal behind the double door entryway filled with tree-trimming doves, the excitement of the gift-giving season is stoked one beautifully illustrated day at a time.
Originally screen-printed with each window cut by hand, the advent calendar could only be made in small quantities that could not fulfill the demand for it. Looking for a more efficient production method that would retain the beauty and integrity of the handmade calendars, but allow it to be produced in larger quantities at a lower price point, Peter came to Rohner Letterpress in hope of a collaboration.
Letterpress, unlike screen-printing or offset printing, creates an impression in the paper to give the artwork a luxurious, three-dimensional quality as pleasing to the touch as it is to the eye. If funded, our advent calendar will be letterpress printed with environmentally friendly, vegetable-based inks on heavy, archival paper and mounted for hanging between two reclaimed, old-growth redwood bars and packed in a sturdy cardboard box. A true holiday keepsake, reinvented as an elegant work of art, that can be enjoyed year after year.
Initial production set-up costs for complex printed objects, like the advent calendar, are high. And though the letterpress print process is mechanized, there is still a lot of hand assembly that must be done to this calendar to create the final product. We chose Kickstarter for our funding because we did not want to compromise our design or the production process for a risk-adverse, large retailer - instead, we want our focus to be on creating a beautiful, meaningful object you can enjoy for many Christmas seasons to come. With your help, we can create a holiday classic together!
