Since we are in the last week of the campaing and Christmas has already arrived to the caves of Echoes VR, we have opened this temporal Add-ons!
Add-ons are a popular habit in Kickstarter. They aren't standard rewards, but an extra to any reward you have already taken: if you already got a reward, you can add a bit more and get any of these add-ons. So, if you are interested in getting them, you won't have to change your reward, just add a bit more to your pledge. Like a DLC.
Life on Earth withers, and the last hope of the planet lies deep inside. You are stuck in a system of underground caves, alone in a harsh environment, inhabited by unique vegetal life and creatures unknown to the surface world.
Echoes VR is an immersive VR-Compatible First Person Shooter that mixes stealth, action-adventure and survival. Your journey is lived through our unique use of VR: grab a gun from your back, take a vial from your waist and use your hand to navigate through your holographic interface.
Echoes VR will come out in English and Spanish, including both text and voice acting. The estimated release date is April 2019 on PlayStation 4, and later on PC. Both versions, VR and non-VR, will be avaliable at the same time.
You are part of a Ghena recon mission, 6.236 meters beneath the sea. An abyssal beast wrecks your submarine, and you find yourself isolated, lost in an unknown cave network. It’s a secret world, where no man has ever set foot.
And thus, your story begins.
Survival is hard. You’ll walk across sharp rocks, magma streams, cliffs hanging over dark chasms. You’ll run into flowers that exhale poisonous vapors, acid spitting mushrooms, and, to make things worse, the vicious dwellers of the caves. These monstrous creatures will hunt you, proving who is at the top of the food chain.
Ammunition is scarce. In every encounter with an enemy, you face a decision: stealth or direct combat. You may try to sneak past them, which will leave you exposed if you’re discovered, or you may shoot your foes, spending the ammo you might later need in a tougher fight. Whichever you choose, it won’t be easy.
Immersion is one of the core features of Echoes VR, and the game design reflects that in every aspect of the gameplay: your view is free of HUDs, so all the information such as your life, your status or your ammo, is displayed in an interface on your left hand; the endurance and the capabilities of your character are that of an average person, and not those of a supersoldier; the core mechanics are The Augmented Weapon System… all of it aimed to keep you immersed in the game.
The Augmented Weapon System is the main playable innovation in Echoes VR. It’s an equipment system that seeks to take advantage of Virtual Reality by accessing your items and weapons in a very intuitive way, performing movements similar to those you would do in real life:
- To unsheathe your knife, place your hand on the left side of your waist.
- To take consumable flasks, place your hand over your left shoulder,
- To draw your weapons, place your hand on the right side of your waist or over your right shoulder.
The Augmented Weapon System deeply boosts the immersion. Moreover, we have noticed during our tests that it lessens motion sickness.
Free movement has always been one of the main features of Echoes VR: you may walk wherever you want. No teleporting. The caves contain different settings and habitats, such as chambers filled with air and plant life, narrow cliffs through magma streams, pitch black dens…
Echoes VR is set 6000 meters beneath the sea, so expect water. Many of the levels are completely flooded. These areas have a unique biome, with specific plant life and creatures, and offer a different gameplay: you will be swimming, facing underwater enemies, and you won't be able to use firearms, only your harpoon and your knife.
Echoes VR levels are full of hidden corners, which hold fragments of the story, ammunition and resources. Besides, an ominous secret lays deep beneath in the caves. Something unknown, crucial for the future of mankind.
One of the most remarkable features of Echoes VR is the sonar. During your exploration, you won't have a flashlight or any other device that would let you light your path, and we are deep beneath the sea: a place far away from all sunlight. Some areas are completely dark, and your only way to recognize your surroundings is using the sonar.
The sonar generates a bubble that maps your location on each pulse. It can be turned on and off at will. However, there is a refresh time between pulses. Only a few seconds, but, if anything moved, you would not know until the next pulse...
The caves are crowded with unknown plant species. While exploring, you may extract and store different samples (like healing extract, viscous fluid, poisonous extract…). Your suit is designed to be a portable chemical lab that allows you to mix extracts to craft useful consumables, like:
- Healing solutions, to recover from your injuries,
- Poisons of different strengths, to coat your harpoon and inflict status ailments to your enemies,
- A paralysis resistance solution.
Crafting is a core game mechanic: it’s the only way to obtain healing items or to protect against poison and paralysis, two status ailments that many plants and creatures can inflict upon you. Every solution you craft is automatically stored in one of your free flasks, so the number of flasks you have determines how many solutions you can carry at the same time. You start with two, and you can find more, if you know where to look.
The year is 2066.
Life on Earth withers. The vast majority of seeds die before sprouting. No known cause, no explanation, no solution. As vegetal life slowly vanishes from the planet, animals and mankind will follow. The end of all life on Earth draws near.
After an atrocious war over the control of the few habitable parts of the planet, the last surviving countries formed The Government: a global assembly focused on centralizing all production, rationing and distribution of food and resources. The Government became the true authority. Faced with the impending extinction of all life on Earth, the Government gathered the greatest minds in the world into project Kore Garden. Its only purpose: to heal the plants and ensure the survival of the planet.
Now, thirty years have passed since Kore Garden started, and five since all hope was lost and the project was cancelled.
The main detractor of The Government is The Ghena. The Ghena is an underground organization that rose after discovering an emergency message sent by the members of a lost underwater expedition. That message contained information about “Sathla, the source of life”. For the public, the Ghena keeps a protective attitude based on taking care of those in need, but no one knows their true interests.
The Ghena finances expeditions to the abyssal sea and different locations of the planet, looking for a solution to the Earth crisis. They accept anyone as recruits, no matter their situation.
It is in one of these expeditions that the story of Echoes VR takes place.
You are in a bathyscaphe, a submarine designed for abyssal deeps. You enrolled because you needed the money. Alongside you are Randall, a friendly novice of the Ghena, and Sara, the scientific officer, a woman as bright as secretive.
Shortly after your arrival, you find yourself isolated from your team. Your only companion will be Sara’s voice on the communicator: as you explore, you’ll share your discoveries with her, and you’ll be able to ask her about the diverse findings you’ll come across. As the game progresses, you'll get to know her better.
Echoes VR ponders about loneliness, the incapability of humanity to learn from its own flaws, and the interrelation between man and nature. It’s a story about survival, that of a lone person in a harsh environment, and that of the one species that seems to never stop walking towards its own destruction.
Echoes VR is a game designed for Virtual Reality, but we’ve always had compatibility in mind. The game takes advantage of VR with the Augmented Weapon System and scenarios adapted to this technology, but it’s absolutely not a VR-exclusive game. Just to be clear:
Echoes can be completely played and enjoyed without a Virtual Reality headset
We are sure that many people who don't play on VR will find interesting our video game. Without VR, the input is switched to a more classic style, quite similar to most First Person Shooters. All other features remain the same.
Echoes will be launched on PlayStation 4 initially, PSVR version and regular version at the same time, and later on PC. There isn’t an official launch date yet, but we estimate that the PS4 version will come out around April, and the PC version approximately half a year later.
We are Rogue Titan Games, a video game studio located in Madrid. Some of us met while we were studying in Politechnic University of Madrid and we have worked together ever since. Over time, new members joined our family. Now, we are part of the PlayStation Talents Games Camp program, a place for video game creation founded by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Since the beginning, we had a simple goal: develop a game we would love to play. Despite our low budget and limited resources, we were determined to create a unique game, capable of charming thousands of players around the world. And, to achieve that, we need your help.
As you can see, we don’t ask for a huge amount of money: 8.820 € (9980 $). We did the math to know how much we’ll need to ensure the release and boost the quality of the game:
First, we’ll invest on covering the expenses directly related to game development: business costs, trademarks registrations, program licences... After those mandatory expenses, our priority is to get full voice acting in Spanish, as well as a professional English translation (for both text and voice acting), since we feel this is essential for any narrative game like ours. Furthermore, all funds over 8820 € will go to keep improving the game, as explained in the next section.
That’s all we long for: that Echoes VR becomes the game we’ve been working for so hard.

The Expert Mode is a challenge for those who love survival. In this mode, the game experience focusses on crafting, resources management and enhanced realism in weapon and creature damage.
Recording the music with real instruments will boost the quality of the game soundtrack.

We can’t spoil it with details, but we can say it’s a monster and you will not be happy when you see it. This enemy would appear on its own combat arena.
· 23.000 € - Translations
Initially, Echoes VR will be available in English and Spanish. If we reach this goal, we will translate the in-game texts and subtitles to the official languages of the two countries with more backers.
· 30.000 € - Big Echoes
Big Echoes is the code name of several improvements to the quality of the game: a more complex environment, increased enemy variety, more particles, small gameplay tweaks… several features we were forced to left behind during the development of the game that will come back if we reach this goal.
· 40.000 € - Survival Mode
A classic survival mode in which you’ll have to face endless waves of enemies.
· 60.000 € - Frozen Level
A whole new level, that will extend the game experience by adding a frozen cave, with a unique and totally different biome.
· 100.000 € - DLC Sara’s Path + Echoesmon
Sara’s path DLC is a separate campaign where we’ll follow her journey, parallel to the main story of Echoes VR. And, ¿what is Echoesmon? We can only say that it is a gameplay feature that will be present in the game, in the main campaign. What it is exactly is a secret that remains unravel…

Risks and challenges
We are a small studio developing an ambitious game. Developers like us know better than anyone that making games is always a tricky process. The greatest threat of all, the fear that never abandons indie studios, is not being able to finish the game. We believe we have this risk under control, since we got this far, and the PlayStation Talents Games Camp program supports us.
Completion dates are the other great challenge that keeps us alert. We have been together for a while, so we have had time to make many rookie mistakes, and, in our experience, the most dangerous of all are those related to completion dates. Planning properly is difficult, and we know some features may take longer than expected to implement, and many problems may appear in the worst moment.
