About

Hola. Mescal Archivo & Rodolfo Galgana here.

Chances are, if you were to ask your friends what mescal was, they’d probably have a tough time telling you: A type of tequila? Worms in bottles maybe? Vague references to shameful, shameful nights...

We want to change that.

We’re here to re-educate the world about the mescal spirit class. Real mescal -- not the cheap, commercial, counterfeit kind found on US shelves for decades. We’re talking authentic, even transcendental, craft mescal from places like Oaxaca, Mexico. The really good stuff.

The Mescal Archivo project is a partnership of mescal enthusiasts: a collective of Mexico’s most prominent palenqueros, a consortium of mescal aficionados, and me - just a kid from Seattle with a thing for eating and drinking well.

We know good mescal.

Our project was born from the idea that, together, we might find a way through the medium of film to propel mescal’s story beyond Mexico and connect a wider audience to the agave spirit class.

Mescal, also spelled mezcal, is a spirit class produced from the agave plant, or 'maguey'. Over 200 species of maguey have been documented worldwide, many of which are endemic to Mexico. [Agave illustrations inspired by Abisai Garcia-Mendoza et al.]

Mescal can be produced from many different species of agave. Tequila, the most commercially known form of mescal, is just one small subset of a much broader spectrum.

We want to build a web documentary to share mescal's story with the world. You can help us get there.

Like all Kickstarter campaigns, the Mescal Archivo project operates on an all-or-nothing funding model. Meaning, our project only gets funded if we can meet or exceed our target pledge level of $15,000 by the 2nd of November 2013 - Dia de los Muertos. We’re looking for a little help and a lot of love from the Kickstarter community! With the right resources, we can kickstart our campaign to help fund:

  • The Return Expedition: There's more to shoot! We filmed a lot of great footage from our first excursion in March 2013. Help us bring our camera crew from Studio64 Photography back to Oaxaca so we can get even more on tape, like that one dancing dog from Teotitlán...
  • The Logistics: Ground transportation, translators, guides, gear, video production, web design.

Risks and challenges

$15,000 can help us get the Mescal Archivo project off the ground. It's just enough to bring our film crew back to Oaxaca, shoot more footage, and share the video content online (albeit in a very basic format).

We want to do even more with the Mescal Archivo web documentary. The greater the funding from this campaign, the better our chances of building something special. We're looking to our backers to help us get the word out and build interest behind the project. With the right resources, we can afford a technology team to help us have some real fun with the web documentary format.

We know it'll also be a lot of work. There might even be some unexpected hitches along the way. Mescal Archivo is an on-going work in progress and a learn-as-we-go creative effort by some very dedicated enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds. As the project evolves, we'll be sharing progress updates with all of our backers to keep everyone in the loop.

From all our friends in Oaxaca and Seattle, thank you!
