About this project
My name is Rodney Smith I have been a photographer for over 45 years. I have worked with many clients over the last four decades (see Kickstarter Bio for client list). My true photographic love, however, has been the creation of photographic editioned prints as well as photo-books of my work.
My prints and photo-books are available through galleries in the United States and many other places around the world. I have published four prior photobooks: one through the Houghton Mifflin Company, one through Doubleday, and I self-published my limited edition book, The End. I love the process of self-publishing and the creative freedom it allows. It is for this reason and many others that I am bringing my latest book project RODNEY SMITH to Kickstarter to ask for the Kickstarter community’s assistance.
Over the last year I have pitched the concept for my current book project RODNEY SMITH to many publishers. Although many of them shared my enthusiasm for the book, I couldn’t find a publisher that would commit to the highest standard of quality that I feel each of my book projects deserves.
By self-publishing the RODNEY SMITH book I am able to keep the retail cost of the book down while still producing a book of the highest quality. Self-publishing also allows me to print with Blanchette Press, the same printer that did an amazing job printing my last book, The End. The only catch of self-publishing is that it is necessary for me to raise the money to print the book myself.
I am turning to the Kickstarter community to help fund the considerable expense involved in printing this new RODNEY SMITH book.
Details about this project:
I am proud to create and share a retrospective of my work over the last 45 years as a photographer. This is the first book that will include both my more contemporary color work, and the more iconic black & white imagery that I have become known. It will be punctuated by brief writings that were inspired by a blog I have been writing for the last five years. This will be the most ambitious and comprehensive book I have produced to date.
The RODNEY SMITH Book Specs:
- Over 175 Photographs: color and black & white pictures.
- Dimensions: 13 inches high by 11 inches wide.
- Paper: highest quality heavy weight matte-surface paper.
- Printing Press: eight color Heidelberg Press:
- Four-color process, plus tri-tone for the b&w images.
- The use of a spot varnish on the pictures to make them glow.
- Printed by master printer Kim Blanchette at Blanchette Press.
The RODNEY SMITH book will be ready to go to print in September. The designer has been working on the design for the last year and the design is now complete. The writings for the book are nearly finished. The printer has begun to make the color separations of the images and is in the process of making test prints in preparation for the printing. All I need now is to raise the money to print the book.
By backing this Kickstater campaign you are making the printing of the RODNEY SMITH book possible.
I really appreciate the Kickstarter community for helping me to self-publish this RODNEY SMITH book. Thank you very much for your support. The book will be bound in October, and the signed copies, and other prizes will be delivered by the holidays.

ABOUT RODNEY SMITH:
Risks and challenges
The risk for this Kickstarter project is mostly my own risk because I am self-publishing the Rodney Smith book, and I am taking all the financial risk if the book doesn’t sell. If the book doesn’t sell then I will end up with a room full of unsold books, but there is minimal risk for any backer to be associated with this project.
If this campaign is funded then the Rodney Smith book will ship out along with other rewards to backers in December 2015. Thank you for your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
