About

LIFE Magazine Award Winning Photographer seeks your help in making this book a reality and sending it into the world.

Hi...my name is Rodney Cartasegna. I am a Black & White Fine Art Photographer by trade born in Portland, Oregon and have been working as a photographer since graduating from Oregon State University where I took my first class in photography. This year marks my 40th year as a photographer. I continue to work as a Fine Art and commercial photographer while serving in my church and community.

In 1987 I was selected as one of eight winners in LIFE magazine’s Contest for Young Photographers open to both amateur and professional photographers. More details of the contest are below the Book Description.

The work that I am submitting for you to consider supporting is titled And Then There Was Light. This book is print ready and all the files are ready for the book maker. You will see the book description below accompanied by photographs of the actual prototype book, pages from the book and an additional video.

Early in my photographic career I had a vision of a book of black and white photographs of God's creation accompanied by His Word. This book is a fulfillment of that vision, honoring God with my gift and to witness to the world through His Word and images of His creation.

And Then There Was Light is a compilation of approximately 113 biblical texts, each accompanied and illustrated by a photograph. Each biblical text is page left and the accompanied photograph is page right, giving honor and precedence to the Word, for His Word preceded creation. The book begins with God’s formation of the heavens and the earth in Genesis and follows with many more beautiful texts celebrating the handiwork of our Creator, including many wonderful Psalms of David, king of Israel.

In the middle of the book the Word is introduced, where in the first verse of the book of St. John it says, "And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us." The scriptures tell of mankind's various stages of life and ultimately death and the grave. But it doesn't stop there, for there is hope. God's greatest gift to humanity is woven into the second half of the book and culminates according to the scripture, "Behold, I make all things new."

So, in essence,  And Then There Was Light is a short story of God’s creation, the fall of mankind, and His greatest gift to humanity to redeem mankind back to Himself, the gospel. I do not believe you will find another book quite like this in print. The limited text chosen for each page has made it possible to create the font large and bold for all to see, young and old. And the calligraphic font expresses beautifully God’s written Word, His love letter to humanity.

The photographs for the book are all printed in rich warm brown tones. In fact, even the text is in a dark brown tone. A strictly black and white rendition would be too stark, too cold. The warm tones are meant to reflect the warmness and gentleness of The Holy Spirit. God is just, yes, but He is also gentle, patient and long-suffering, not willing that any should perish. He will not force Himself on anyone. This book is meant to be a gentle invitation and introduction to the non-believer and affirmation of God's love and the beauty of His creation for all mankind.

My purpose, ministry and desire is to witness to people through God’s written Word accompanied by photographs of His creation. This book is a result of many years of hard work, prayer and much patience.

Please support me and this campaign to send forth "His Word" through your prayers, your pledge, and by sharing this fund-raising campaign with many others. And please be sure to consider gifting And Then There Was Light  to your family and friends.

So shall be My word be that goes forth from My mouth. It shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

Isaiah 55:11

All REWARD choices for contributors of prints are at the very bottom of this page.

I have included below a copy of two pertinent pages from the November 1987 issue of:

"LIFE magazine’s Contest for Young Photographers"

Because the text is so small in the copy of the story below, for your convenience I have included below each page selected text as it appeared in the article.

"You may not recognize their faces, but the young men and women on this page represent the latest wave in a long tradition. They are among the finest of a new generation of photojournalists whose vision may help shape the way we look at the world in the decades to come."

LIFE invited photographers age 30 and under (this outraged many of you) to submit up to 25 pictures "on any subject that reflects American society." By the time the last manila envelope had been opened, we had received 3,078 entries, almost twice the number of submissions to LIFE's first contest in 1951. Winners in that competition included Robert Frank, Ruth Orkin, Elliott Erwitt and Dennis Stock, all of whom later made their photographic mark.

In June the magazine's former deputy picture editor, Mel Scott, took on the herculean task of sifting the entries down to a mere 250. It took him two weeks to look at more that 60,000 photographs. Then Scott was joined by six other distinguished judges for the final selection: Cornell Capa, executive director of the International Center of Photography; Van Deren Coke, director of the Department of Photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; David Hume Kennerly, Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer; Jane Livingston, associate director and chief curator of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; and David B. Travis, curator of the Photography Collection, the Art Institute of Chicago.

After two weeks of judging, the panel had selected eight finalists. Although there was spirited disagreement over the order- enough so that two third prizes were awarded, there was unanimity on their excellence.

Below is the caption that accompanied the photograph above in LIFE magazine.

The landscapes of Cartasegna are in striking contrast to the work of the photojournalists. Cartasegna, 28, a "fine arts" photographer in Milwaukie, Oregon says, "Light is the first thing that catches my eye. Light is what gives something life...transforms it into a deeper reality.." Cartasegna likes to drive around the countryside looking for scenes and situations to photograph. One evening he drove through a town called Harrisburg. "The town looked about 30 years behind the times," he recalls. "The day was dark, cloudy and it had rained earlier. I drove down a dirt road and the white fence caught my eye. It had a kind of inner glow. And there were a lot of textures surrounding it- the ground, the foliage, the sidewalk. There was such a quietness about it."

RISKS and CHALLENGES

Every project has its own risks and challenges.

In this case, I don't foresee any major risks. The photographs, text, book design and files are already completed and print ready. I have calculated all of the necessary costs for printing, packaging materials and shipping costs. I have met numerous times with the respected local printing house. Our goal and plan is to have 3000 books printed and warehoused by mid-February, 2020. Shipping will begin immediately afterwards. Rewards other than books will begin shipping sooner. The goal is for the last reward to be in my backer's hands before the celebration and remembrance of our Lord's Resurrection, April 12, 2020.

The only reason I can see that we may not reach this delivery goal of everyone receiving their reward by this date would be in the case of an overwhelming response and success of this campaign. In this case it will be a positive and welcomed challenge, and I will gather all the resources available to help accomplish the task at hand. Therefore, I hope you will all be patient in case of this kind of happy scenario.

One of the other major challenges is to reach a large enough audience to reach the target. With your help and everyone else that sees this campaign, we can reach and surpass the goal by sharing this Kickstarter campaign with as many people as possible. So please, help spread "The Word" through Facebook, Twitter, your church, family, friends and co-workers... and any other way you can think of to make this project a great success.

Just share my Kickstarter link, www.KickStartRod.com which will guide them directly to this campaign.  I am most grateful for your time, prayers and support. Sincerely...Rod

The Lord bless you, and keep you:

The Lord make his face shine to upon you, and be gracious unto you:

The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.     Numbers 6:24-26
