I'm using Kickstarter as a means to reach out to you all in the hope that you'll help to support the creation and printing of my webcomic, Orbit: encounter.
I've been creating this free to read webcomic since 2014, and the comic itself has been live since 2016. Since it's inception, my ambition has always been to get this project to print, but due to the cost of living, etc.
I have had ever reducing available time to put into the production of Orbit: encounter, which is torturous since to me Orbit: encounter is my baby. And although my creative director Bug the ferret likes to try and help, he can't figure out the Photoshop shortcuts, and to be frank with you, he is constantly asleep on the job...
Orbit: encounter is a sci-fi, survival horror-thriller, which has some comedic moments. It follows Oscar, a young and naive salvage officer, who has been landed in the thick of it.
The comic begins with Oscar having been sent on a mission to retrieve a data cache stored aboard the abandoned scientific research ship New Discovery. But, all is not what it appears and Oscar quickly realises: the ship isn't as empty has he was initially informed, and things soon become much more complicated. Follow Oscar as he has to learn quickly what it takes to survive.
On top of this, Oscar has always been curious about the reason behind his and his 5 siblings creation on a space station occupied by a diverse array of humanoid beings, but strangely lacking in sapient animals. Is this dramatic turn of events going to help unravel those secrets? Was Oscar sent to this death trap on purpose, or was it just an unlikely coincidence?
By supporting this Kickstarter you'll get the first two chapters of Orbit: encounter - a whopping 70+ pages of comic and cover art. You'll also help me get hugely closer towards the completion of volume 1, where we'll uncover whether or not The New Discovery is the most dangerous place for Oscar or not.
Orbit: encounter is available to read for free here: www.orbitcomic.com
My goal for this project is to get the first couple of chapters printed (around 70 pages of comic) so that I can promote my webcomic more successfully at comic conventions. I ideally wanted to wait for the entire first volume to be complete before I set up a Kickstarter campaign. But now I have begun to realise that the comic's lack of physical presence is quite a hindrance when it comes to gaining an audience when promoting at conventions.
I really, REALLY want to complete volume 1. But to do this I need to produce 60-80 more pages of Orbit: encounter, currently I am only able to create 22-28 pages a year(!). So I hope that with your help and generosity I will be able to greatly step-up my production rate.
As I mentioned above, over the past year I have been struggling to juggle the amount of income I can survive on, and the amount of time I can put into the creation of Orbit: encounter. I currently work 3-4 days a week as junior admin at an office, this is so I can (barely) afford my share of the household bills, and the rest of my time is typically spent working on commissions - which means I only get about 10 hours a week to spend on the creation of Orbit: encounter. Thus, my goal is to focus a healthy sum of the funds raised from this campaign into literally buying myself time. That way I can actually dedicate a decent amount of time into completing the first volume and begin the preparations of getting the complete first volume printed.
Once this £4000/$5200 goal is met, I will be able to reduce my hours at the day job by at just under half for an entire year, and have between 12-20 more hours a week to spend on the creation of Orbit: encounter, which would more than double my production rate.
If the goal is vastly surpassed, to a total of around £8,000/$10,000, my estimated time of completing the first volume could reduce to just over a year, and I could even set aside some of the money to put towards printing costs.
WHAT WILL I GET IN RETURN?
This project is my baby (essentially Bug's sibling, shhh don't tell him, he'll get jealous!), and I would be eternally grateful for all the help I get into making this a reality. For everyone who pledges this project your name will be added to the hall of fame on Orbit: encounter's website, as well as being printed in the acknowledgement section of the book. There is also a diverse range of reward to choose from in this campaign, as you will see from the graphic below. Also, If you are a supporter of my Patreon you'll get special bonuses for supporting this campaign on top of the reward tier you select.
You'll also get exclusive art previews, such as: character designs & reference sheets, environment studies, thumbnails of upcoming pages, etc. And you'll also be one of the first groups to see the finished pages before they're published on the web comic (my patrons via Patreon will have a two page advantage on you).
You'll also get some exclusive merchandise for being so otterly (har-har) awesome!
What size will the enamel pin be?
The pin will be 3cm x 3cm, it will be a hard enamel pin with a silver effect plating.
Will I be able to choose what size my t-shirt will be?
Yes of course, and I'll also do a breakdown of the t-shirt measurements. Unfortunately at the moment I can only offer men's style t-shirts, but I will change this in a stretch goal if we greatly surpass the initial goal.
With the cameo reward, what does that actually give me?
This reward will get you drawn into the next chapter of the webcomic. You will feature in at least two panels as background character(s). At this time, due to the direction of the narrative, this will only include humans or humanoid aliens (with some exceptions), but not animal/furry characters.
With the digital commission tiers: what kind of files will I receive?
Upon completion of your digital commissions you will get a high resolution printable file along with two web/online posting files; one high resolution, one low resolution. If you wanted the layered PSD, I would have to negotiate an additional fee as this is not my standard practice.
Risks and challenges
I intend to redraw the first 9 pages of Chapter One due to weak scripting and the dramatic change of art style, this should not take me long and has already been calculated into the reward fulfilment times.
Other than delivery times and quality checks for the merchandise there should not be any large delays in the campaign.
If the campaign goes way over the funding goal I will add in some extra rewards - but I don't want to water down the funds too much, as I hope to use what little remains to fund the continuation of this webcomic.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
