The can is the next step for us. Right now you can get our beer on tap at the concessions in Rockaway Beach, at a few restaurants and bars in the NYC area, and at our brewery in Queens, NY. We love when people drop by our tasting room at the brewery and take our beer home in growlers to share with their friends.
What excites us about having a local craft beer business is that fresh beer actually tastes better. With the ability to can on-site we can do what we do with the keg – get fresh beer out within two weeks of it being brewed so that you can have our fresh beer anywhere, anytime.
Our Kickstarter goal is set at $30K. Our dream goal is $43K: enough to purchase an entire semi-automated canning line. That would mean that we can hand-pack cans with the help of a machine, and because this is all done in New York you can drop the brewery and watch us do it 2 cans at a time.
History: A Rockaway Brew-mance
We started Rockaway Brewing Co in 2010 as two home-brewers making beer in Rockaway Beach. When brewing in our backyards one summer, we came across the perfect recipe of our ESB and we kept making it over and over again because we loved drinking it. That is when it became clear to us that we had to start a company - this beer was so good we wanted to share it with everybody.
In 2012 after perfecting the ESB, we started brewing commercially on a 2 barrel brew system located in Long Island City, Queens. Today, with the help of John, Flint, and Justine, we are brewing on a 5 barrel system and are excited to keep growing our company and sharing our craft with more of the craft beer community.
The Original Rockaway ESB is the beer that started it all. It is the recipe that we kept coming back to during our summers brewing in Far Rockaway and will be the first thing that we will put into cans.
Rockaway ESB is an English style Ale with an American twist. Amber in color with a malty understructure, it is accompanied by smooth hop characteristics to complement a subtle sweetness.
Rockaway Brewing Co. is known for making malty, balanced beer. And no matter how much we grow as a company, we will always stay true to our vision - to craft consistently well-made, quality, fresh beer.
Over the past few months, we have invested all of our resources into our brewery with our 5 barrel brew system and expanding our tasting room. The Summer Ale: A light, bright and crisp blonde with a mild lingering hoppiness that’s sure to refresh during the warmer months.
1875: A pale ale with a medium body and citrusy hops that is named after the first year the trains made it to the Rockaways.
Old School IPA: A beer that combines a fruity malt character and a balanced hop presence to make a kinder, gentler east coast IPA that goes down easy.

Risks and challenges
As small business owners we know all too well that the best intention and vision has risks - and we have learned step by step that if there are potential setbacks you better take them seriously because chances are... so we have had to learn how to anticipate potential problems and be ready. It's actually why we need the can right now. We sell lots of beer from the tap at Rockaway Beach during the summer but to cover the cost of our new 5 barrel system we need to get our beer flowing even when the season is over. Cans are a way we can keep our growth as a business steady and keep doing what we love doing - delivering fresh and delicious craft beer to you. In order to make sure our process of integrating canning into our company goes as smoothly as possible we have anticipated and planned for the following challenges.
Because our focus is fresh to market, our plan is to turn over inventory quickly but we are also equipped and ready to store it. We have already negotiated with our landlord on our storage capacity which will need to increase according to demand.
Our Rockaway Brewery Co. surf van will be used to deliver the cans. We are planning to add roof-racks made out of surf boards to create additional space. We aren’t gonna lie - maybe the whole can thing is an excuse to retrofit our surf van into the most awesome delivery truck ever.
Our 5 person team has already rolled its sleeves up and is ready to hand pack. You are welcome to watch us practice our skills. We’re really good.
