Our Story
While working together on a commercial prototype a little over a year, a few members of our team were struck repeatedly by two thoughts: 1. 3D Printing is really awesome - you never get over the feeling of creating something digitally and having it appear in 3D that you can touch and feel. - And 2. Existing 3D Printers are simple but expensive and/or temperamental. Eventually that prototype was complete and we were left with the question - what's next? The answer it turns out, was to see if it was possible to make a 3D printer both more affordable then ever, and easier to use. After months of research, supply chain negotiations, lots of failures, and eventually some huge breakthroughs - the BuildOne was born!
Key Features:
-Auto calibration - the first time you turn it on it sets itself up, if you use the web app you don't even have to download any software!
-Auto leveling - most 3D printers require constant adjustment of the print bed. The BuildOne doesn't, using its unique auto leveling sensor the BuildOne adjusts to print perfectly no matter what the surface is.
-WiFi - Ditch the wires - the BuildOne has built in WiFi, allowing you to print from your computer locally or from a web browser or smartphone anywhere (and that can be disabled if you prefer). It also has USB!
-Modular - the BuildOne is built to last, with professionally designed parts and an exclusive single piece base that makes it both stable and strong. If you ever do want to upgrade it, or if you ever need to repair it - its easy! The included hex key is all you need to remove or swap out any parts (which will all be available) - and the head unit plugs in with just a single cable! Check out the optional add-ons - like a heated bed or a full enclosure, and watch for new ones in development like pick and place and solder paste head units.
- LED Status and Panic Button - when the BuildOne is running the base of the printer lights up to tell you what it is doing - from heating, to printing, to finished. The BuildOne also has a panic button underneath it - while you can take full control of it from your phone or computer - you can interrupt it at any time by hitting the panic button (like if your cat jumps on it!)
- Affordable Add-ons - The base features of the BuildOne blow other affordable printers out of the water - but in addition to that we don't charge huge amounts for the cool add-ons we offer. These include a PEI bed for easy print removal and superior adhesion, an OLED screen and joystick control to view the progress and control the printer directly, a heated bed for printing with ABS, and a full enclosure and carry case to make it compact and portable! The BuildOne is designed for simplicity and utility - it comes flat packed and requires only minor assembly (attach a handful of bolts with included tool, plug in several cables) - after that you just plug it in, connect it to your network, and print!

Open Source Software, Highly Compatible
The BuildOne uses modified version of the Marlin firmware. Mostly we've added the ability to have the head unit communicate via I2C to reduce the wiring required and allow for future upgrades. What does that mean to you? For most people it just means we've built the software on the shoulders of giants, on a tried and true codebase. For Hackers, Makers, and Tinkerers it means we will contribute back our changes, host all of our firmware code on github, and you will be able to hack and change it to your heart's content!
The BuildOne not only has open firmware, but works with almost all of the industry standard software for design and printing.
Again, if you're new to this or just want to print - we're releasing a customized printing application that cares of everything for you and "just works" - but if you're a power user you can pick whatever tool you prefer!
You can also use your BuildOne remotely or via mobile!
Our cloud platform (optional and 100% free) allows you to print to your BuildOne remotely or via the browser on any machine or smartphone. Just login, upload a 3D design, select a quality level, and hit print - if your BuildOne is turned on and idle it will start printing within 30 seconds. And the protocol will be open source! Turn it off if you prefer and you still have a great local WiFi and USB printer.
Rewards, Delivery, and Add-ons
We are confident we can deliver 2000 printers per month, starting in September. For this reason we are limiting rewards to this many printers. If they sell out we will add additional reward tiers for the following months - so the sooner you back, the sooner you get your printer!
We will ship via a combination of DHL and USPS. Our shipping charges are priced at a slight to heavy loss depending on where you live, we don't make a penny on shipping!
We are offering several packages with add-ons - or you can add the appropriate amount to your pledge to get the add-ons "a la carte" (but you cannot purchase the add-ons without a printer).
We highly recommend the Plus Edition! The PEI build plate makes for slightly higher quality prints (because they stick better), and makes it a snap to remove them! This is generally only found on ultra-premium printers, and is an expensive material, but we think it is worth it. That said, the Basic Edition won't disappoint either!
Want to print in ABS? Grab the Deluxe or Ultimate edition - PLA is a great material and most sub-$1000 printers only allow PLA, but some people know they want the added strength of ABS - if that's the case - we have packages for you that includes the heated bed needed for successful ABS printing!
Go Ultimate - Want to print ABS and have a carrying case? Want the higher quality found on fully enclosed machines that are thousands of dollars? Get the Ultimate kit - for the most amazing experience at just around $200!
Extra PLA - The BuildOne comes with a starter roll of PLA to get you started and let you print several objects. Grab a roll of our premium PLA to keep going after that, or use any other PLA (or ABS with the add-on) on the market - we're open, remember? No lock in like you find on most low cost machines.
NOTE: If you get the Dual Extruder and the Filament Detection upgrades we will throw in a second filament detector for no extra charge.
Our Price is Realistic
It seems worth mentioning - our price is realistic, the margins are small, and we need your support to order a large enough quantity of parts to make this possible - but we will deliver, and we'll deliver something that works and works well!
We've spent over a year on the design, finding the right balance between cost and function, and inventing a few new ways to do things along the way. Our printer uses tried and true technology, with some simple innovations, to deliver a high quality printer for $99 - no tricks!
We've been at this for awhile, together our team has led or worked on at least 8 Kickstarters, and Erik, our team leader, and his company Digistump have delivered 5 Kickstarters to over 15,000 people - not to mention hundred of thousands of orders for their products. We're here to change 3D printing, to make it completely accessible, and we're serious about doing that well!

Risks and challenges
The BuildOne has an aggressive price point and deadline - but it has to, if we want to change the world of 3D printing. With many years of Kickstarter and production experience we're confident we can deliver with minimal to no delays.
Since the BuildOne is relatively heavy, postage increases can effect us greatly, however we are prepared to subsidize those increases if they occur. Likewise if any issues arise that cause higher costs for the parts we have capital to ensure they can be corrected without jeopardizing delivery.
Unexpected challenges can and do arise, and while we have lots of experience and have padded our timeline to account for surprises, most importantly we will be transparent and keep you informed every step of the way.
If the BuildOne meets its funding goal we will have no issues producing and packaging that number of printers in-house and several team members are able to work full time (or more!) to ensure that happens.
If the BuildOne greatly exceeds its goal we will be able to have many of the component factories prepare the parts for us - doing things like adding the customized cables and putting together the sub-assemblies. This will increase the chances of us being able to deliver extra units per month.
