What do you do when your four year old daughter refuses to brush her teeth properly? I knew that teaching her to brush her teeth for the required two minutes, and in the proper areas of the mouth, could become a monumental task. I knew that I could make the learning easier, and thought that a fun personal coach might do the job.
“Hi Brushing Buddy. Are you ready to brush?” asks BrushyBall. “My teeth light up to show you where to brush. Just follow me,” coaches BrushyBall. Kids simply have to listen to BrushyBall as he motivates them, "Let's brush our bottom teeth first...and remember to brush in small circles."
BrushyBall provides follow-the-leader, interactive fun while coaching youngsters with “You are a super brusher!” The battery operated tech toy holds toothbrushes and is activated by pushing his nose upward.
BrushyBall encourages children to brush their tongue at the end of each session and congratulates the brusher, “Look at those sparkling white teeth.. Great job! See you next time!"
BrushyBall has a selector switch on the bottom which delivers three different brushing sessions. The six teeth sections will always light up in the same easy to follow pattern for two minutes. Position one shows the lighted teeth, voice guidance and music. Position two shows the lighted teeth with music (no voice). Position three simply shows the lighted teeth.
I believe that singing toothbrushes do not optimize both visual and audible cues and therefore fail to deliver quality brushing education. Their communication typically is an instrumental song while the visual communication is non-existent or is simply one flashing light. This is not optimal communication for users ages 3--8 years old.
BrushyBall was designed with the intent to solve problems:
Motivation: Children commonly lack the desire to brush twice daily and it can be frustrating for parents to constantly demand, argue and negotiate.
Attention Span: Most children can’t stay focused for the two minute duration recommended by the American Dental Association.
Complete Brushing: Children rarely brush all teeth and tooth surfaces. While some of the failure may be due to attention span, a significant part is due to a lack of proper instruction and consistent reinforcement each time they brush.
Technique: It is difficult for children to understand and develop the technique of brushing in small circles, as recommended by the American Dental Association, without demonstration and regular practice.

BrushyBall is launching its Kickstarter campaign in conjunction with National Children’s Dental Health Month, which is sponsored by the American Dental Association in February.
Kids’ tooth decay has hit epidemic proportions with 42% of children ages 2—11 having had cavities in their baby teeth and more than 66% of 16-19 year olds having at least one cavity in their permanent teeth, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
To brighten even more smiles, BrushyBall is committed to contributing to Operation Smile, which provides free surgeries to repair cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities for children around the globe.

I would start by making additional BrushyBall characters so that parents and kids could have a choice. Here are three prototypes that are currently on the drawing board...

--Pursue licensed character alliances from such companies as Disney/Marvel, Pixar, and Sesame Street
--Record in different languages so BrushyBall can be shared worldwide
--Add USB port to the internal recordable chip for downloading new voices and scripts
--Create variety of voice and music tracks to easily download from website
--Add a counter to mark how many times teeth have been brushed, then let the website give points to users of the site based on number of brushes
--BrushyBall stuffed plush toy
--Mini-BrushyBall to hold Tooth Fairy Teeth--1-2”diameter with simple hinge design to hold a lost tooth for placement under a pillow.
Almost five years have gone into the development of BrushyBall to raise it from a simple concept to a market- ready super star. Many of the toughest challenges have already been overcome. The primary challenge up to this point has been to obtain funding in order to make the molds and tooling and to produce inventory.
This is the most important risk that BrushyBall faces and it is why this campaign on Kickstarter is so critical. Without the funding for tooling up and producing we are essentially paralyzed at this production ready stage. We will mitigate this risk on our end by doing everything in our power to get our much-needed funding.
I have an experienced factory on my team that has manufactured toys for some of the biggest toy makers in the U.S. They value quality and timing as much as I do - Highly. The pre-production process involves making steel molds and tooling that are used to produce the product. This process will take 4-8 weeks before we can manufacture. The inventory manufacturing process and shipping to our logistics facility will take another 1 – 5 weeks. Unforeseen delays are possible at this stage, however I have confidence in my factory team and I will continue to work closely with them to keep us on track.
BrushyBall has not made it this far without successfully overcoming some big challenges. Although I plan to succeed, there will be hurdles to jump going forward. I am familiar and experienced with the remaining steps, but I am also not alone in bringing BrushyBall to market. I have a talented team covering marketing, licensing, legal, design, manufacturing, logistics as well as dental industry input. I also have an outstanding partner and mentor in the owner of one of Michigan’s fastest growing toy brands.

Yes, BrushyBall has six teeth sections and they always light up in the same easy to follow pattern. Both the bottom and top teeth are divided into three sections, right, left and middle. The BrushyBall brushing pattern is always bottom-left, bottom-right, bottom-middle, upper-left, upper-right and upper-middle. Each section lights for 20 seconds while the voice guides attention to each currently lighted section.
BrushyBall will be shipped with two AA batteries which power BrushyBall for 900+ uses. That's more than one year of brushing twice a day! Your young brusher just may be a pro by the time new batteries are required :)
No, BrushyBall goes above and beyond everything on store shelves today because it is the only product that sits on the sink top and uses an audio/visual game to influence what a child is actually doing for two minutes. BrushyBall is truly a brushing coach. Singing toothbrushes time out a two minute session, but a child could simply brush 3-4 teeth for that entire time period and believe that complete brushing has taken place. BrushyBall is the only product that sits on the sink top to make a follow-the-leader game out of brushing while guiding a child to brush each individual section and surface of teeth. BrushyBall really is one-of-a-kind !
Yes, and I am very excited about that. You can see a just a few of the model sketches above and if I can hit my stretch goal funding amount I will be able produce new character versions each with a unique look and voice. Yes, in fact there were three patents awarded to BrushyBall and additional intellectual property rights work has been done (and will continue) to protect the first ever sink top toothbrushing coach for kids :)
I LOVE THAT QUESTION! No, one of my stretch goals is to record in every major language so that BrushyBall can be shared all over the world. Keep in mind that nearly 100% of adults, globally, have cavities (Google it) AND there is a direct link between proper oral hygiene and quality of health as we age. As standards of living rise globally there is greater attention and importance placed on oral hygiene. There is an enormous market for BrushyBall to engage.
