Hello, and thank you for checking out my new project! My name is Rob Jones, and I am the writer, artist, and creator of Highspot—and the one writing up all this Kickstarter stuff for you, although my editor/wife will get a crack at it, too, before it's posted.
We've just finished the second issue of a three-issue action/adventure/humor story (kind of like one of those summer blockbuster movies) that will give readers a good introduction to my new character, Kate Carter.
Highspot is the story of Kate Carter, who was inspired by her love of Indiana Jones-type action movies to become a stunt double. But Kate’s a lover of history and archaeology, as well—so when famed archeologist Jerry Carter (no relation) arrives on the set of her latest film as a consultant, she convinces him to take her on his next adventure—along with a motley crew that includes an oil tycoon, a would-be politician and an actress, with a cute dog thrown in, too!
Here are some highlights from reviews of issue No. 1:
“I really enjoyed Highspot! It has an Indiana Jones flavor, with some real history mixed in.” - Jerry Ordway
"I had a lot of fun with Highspot. It’s a great read that jumps you right into the action from page one, and it doesn’t slow down." - Comic Vine
"A great character and a fun read!" - Mark Waid
"Highspot is clever, smart and sexy." - Outright Geekery
"For a debut issue from someone you’ve never heard of, possibly, this is another example of seeing so much promise, talent and ability that when it coalesces it’s going to a force to be reckoned with and that is something worth watching happen." - Reading With A Flight Ring
And here are a couple pages with a bit of Kate Carter's background (origin story!) from issue No. 1...
In this issue, Kate and the gang are on their way to find the remains of Alexander the Great. But what kind of adventure would it be if that was simple?
The second issue also features six pages penciled by comics legend Dick Giordano. I was Dick's last art assistant for many years, and in that time he penciled this biography of Alexander (with the assist of my Perfect Storm partner-in-crime Gary Carbon).
And here are a few of the freshly-inked pages!
Issue 2 also features pin-ups by a couple of amazing artists. The first is by Rick Celis.
And the other is by Gene Gonzales!
Hope this makes up for the fact I can't show too much else from this issue because it's all a bit spoiler-y...
Well, except maybe this scene...
That said, the best part of this Kickstarter campaign is that the whole issue is already done! Yup—colored, lettered, edited (then lettered again), so there will be no waiting around. Once the Kickstarter ends, I'll be able to get this off to the printer and on it's way out to you!
Not only is this one done, here's a little preview of what's to come...
I hope you love Highspot as much as we do—thank you again for taking the time to check out our project.
Risks and challenges
Having printed comics—and packaged and shipped many more comics for eBay sales—before, the only risk or challenge I foresee is if we get so many orders we have to change printers in order to meet demand! ;)
Modesty aside, I have done the research and got pricing in case that does happen, but I don't think that will be an issue. However, please feel free to prove me wrong!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
