About this project
Our apps are used by millions of people worldwide and have been featured by Apple and popular media.
We spend a lot of time touch typing on our iPhones, and we want to make it better. Much better. Think about it:
There has to be a faster way to type.
And it should be easier to type with one hand.
Is there an easier way to move the cursor?
I can never tell if I’m on upper or lower case.
Why are emojis so hard to find?
Why can’t I make the keyboard mine? I want some themes!
And why are the best selling keyboards Android replicas?
We decided to build the perfect iPhone keyboard.
To us, the iPhone's keyboard is more than just a tool for typing. It’s how we connect with friends, family, coworkers, and a rapidly evolving world.
We believe touch keyboards have a wealth of untapped potential, which is why we're building your Next Keyboard for iPhone.
We love our iPhones as much as you, so a few friends and I started Tiny Hearts studio. We got to make careers from our passion for apps and our parents stopped telling us to get jobs (so that was nice).
Fast forward a few years and we’ve made some pretty cool apps, won some awards, and even had an app featured in an Apple commercial. This momentum encouraged us to dive into our next big endeavour. When Apple opened their doors to custom keyboards with iOS 8, there was no doubt: we had to make the Next Keyboard.
We know what we want in the perfect iOS keyboard and the problems we want to solve. But we also wanted to make you part of the process. So we reached out to the community at Reddit, Product Hunt, and Designer News. We even held workshops at meetups and interviewed users to make sure we were building something people want. What came next was 7 months of coding, designing, building, and testing, all the while getting more feedback and excitement for Next’s launch.
Now we’re proud to say that it’s almost here. With backers like you, we can finally get Next Keyboard onto the App Store and into your hands. As the great Captain Planet once said, “the power is yours.”
1) Smart cursor, fast editing
Know how you have to fumble around to move your cursor to just the right spot? Say goodbye to that. With Quick Cursor Swipe, you can simply swipe across the spacebar annnnd presto! Your cursor magically appears exactly where you want it.
2) One tap emoji
Emojis are an extension of our feelings. So we made it easier to find and share them with one tap emojis! Simply scroll once to find your favorite emoji. We also added the Apple glyph so you can rave about the Watch.
3) Next word predictions
Type less, say more. With Next Word Prediction, we predict what you’re trying to say before you say it. You could almost say our keyboard is reading your mind.
4) Emoji suggestions
By the time you find the right emoji, you could have just typed how you feel. So we'll suggest it for you as you type so it’s only one tap away.
5) Swipe to type
You want to type faster but you refuse to put down that coffee. Or you got an iPhone 6 Plus. No worries, we got you.
6) That's some good shift
Never, ever—and we mean ever—guess again whether your shift key is on or off.
7) Beautiful themes
You want a keyboard that looks and feels as unique as you are. So let’s get you out of those greys and into some color.
8) Quick Access to numbers & punctuation
It should be easy to text your m8. A simple tap, hold, and switch gives you quick access between numbers and letters.
Sometimes it’s more like auto-incorrect. The Next Keyboard learns how you type so you get your message right the first time.
10) Unique keyboard sounds
Not every button is the same, so why do they all have the same sound? Now you can actually hear which keys you tap with our custom sounds.
11) 100% private & secure
You don’t need to enable “full access” to use Next Keyboard. We don’t collect your data. We’d much rather sell a great product over people’s information.
Don’t be alarmed, we’re going to keep the features you already love, like shortcuts, double tap space for period, quick delete and how your keyboard learns as you type. We love them too!
The more problems we can solve, the better! Like, making it easier to type in landscape and with one hand on the iPhone 6 Plus. We also hate how we keep hitting period by accident when trying to tap the spacebar. So no more of that!
We've started showing off our keyboard online and here's what people are saying:
We’ve been in the game as a bootstrapped and independent studio for five years now. Unlike large software companies, we don’t have floors of developers and venture capital in the bank. But what we do have is a strong community of iPhone users who believe in what we’re doing.
Keyboards are much more complicated than they look and we want to get this right. At this point, we have an early beta version which means we’re 75% there. But it’s that last 25% that’s most challenging. With one big final push we can actually get this keyboard to those who want it as bad as we do.
For that to happen, we need to grow our team with experts in machine learning and natural language processing to help us build a more powerful engine for prediction, auto-correct, and swipe typing.
It’s important that iPhone users are involved in shaping the future of Next Keyboard. Through Kickstarter, we can build this together.
Tiny Hearts is a software studio based in the heart of Toronto. We’re a small team of 5 designers, developers, doers, and dreamers with one simple goal - change people’s lives in small and meaningful ways.
We may be small, but we sure dream big.
Team Tiny Hearts, at its core, is Robleh Jama, Rob Chia, Quadri Oshibotu, Gabe Rozenberg, and Corey Pollock. Special thanks to Nermin Moufti and Marco Patricio who helped with branding and sound design. Teamwork makes the dream work!
Next Keyboard version 1.0 is just the beginning. Keeping you in love with our keyboard is a long term commitment. So we’ll never stop listening to your feedback and adding more features.
Risks and challenges
Making a quality app is nothing new for us. We’ve created a better alarm clock (Wake), a better fitness experience (Quick Fit), and a #1 education app (Pocket Zoo).
Behind every great app are greater challenges. Getting a keyboard with the functionality we want isn’t easy. We’re dealing with a lot of moving parts, from research, design, development, to usability and more. There are always setbacks when developing technology, however, one of the risks we foresee is meeting our delivery date to the App store (February 2015). There’s also the approval process from the app store, but that’s nothing we haven’t already worked through in the past. It just means we might have to make a few changes before Apple approves our app.
We will keep our backers up to date with our progress and let you know if we encounter any setbacks.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
