About this project
Our vision is to create fashion for a better world.
Fashion of tomorrow is creative, customisable, and a master piece of art. It is produced in complete flow with our ecosystem and made of materials that make us feel the beauty of nature on our skin. The industry of the future not only stands for vivid looks but also uses innovative working models that put people before profit. It is an industry that truly functions around humans by caring for makers and consumers alike.
With this vision in our minds and hearts, we took the first steps towards creating a human-centred design brand: Please meet Robin Grey and its first born coats collection.
Because the fashion industry of tomorrow starts today.
Unique Coat Attributes
In wanting to change the fashion game, Robin Grey aims to reduce fabric waste and promote a different attitude towards shopping. In doing so, all garments will be made to order, promoting slow fashion and ensuring we can achieve the three specifications to our coats:
1. Perfect fit (customisable, based on order-only, tailor made for you)
We want to ensure that you can invest in a luxury and quality coat that fits you comfortably and confidently. By following the size chart and measuring instructions provided, simply distinguish which size curve you fall into and order your desired coat design. For the perfect fit, we will personally adjust a few measurements, such as sleeve length, hem length and belt loop placement. Once you have pledged for a coat and after we reach our goal, we will send you a survey where you can chose your colour, size, design that you backed and adjustment request. If you are unsure of which size curve you fall in to or the fit of the coat, let us know on the form or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will assist you. All coats are made to order – no stock is kept on hand.
2. Unique design
The colours provided for the coats have been naturally blended to achieve the shades. With each wool batch that is produced, no one batch can ever be exactly the same with only slight variants in colour. In allowing you to chose the colour of your coat, this will promote a sense of individuality that no other coat will be exactly the same as yours! Our beautiful screen print has been hand drawn and developed in-house, showcasing our representation of South African design.
Benefits of alpaca wool
- Alpaca wool comes in 22 different natural shades, which can be blended together to achieve many different results;
- Alpaca wool is warmer than merino wool;
- The wool does not contain lanolin like merino wool, which is a greasy substance secreted from the skin to act as waterproof for the wool (and the sheep). This results in a less intensive cleaning process as less corrosive soaps are required.
- Natural = biodegradable!
- It is water repellent;
- Naturally hypoallergenic;
- Is breathable, and last but not least;
- Our alpaca wool is locally sourced!
3. Impact driven
In recent years, the term social businesses came more into use. A social business is an enterprise that focuses on social, environmental, and financial impact equally.
At Robin Grey, we not only decided to explore the best social and environmental practices, but we also want to offer consumers easy understandable and interesting information on these practices. Therefore, we developed a set of metrics which give you insights into the impact journey of your coats, and helps us, to understand exactly where we stand, and what to improve in.
Total Impact Balance
For the privileged among us, topics such as poverty or terrible working conditions are mostly something experienced from a far away distance. Although we are exposed to tons of information every day, we feel that our capacity to help the ones in need is mostly out of reach. In summer 2016, Sarah and two of her Swiss friends wanted to overcome this frustration, and learn how to help. Despite having no previous experience in fashion, the facts about this industry, as well as movements such as fashion revolution, inspired the friends to look deeper into this world of glamour and decay. In October 2016, they hopped on a plane to Cape Town – and that's when Robin Grey found its real beginning.
Guided by their values, they soon met people that shared not only their vision, but actually had the skills and creativity to make dreams real. Reality shocks such as lack of locally produced fabrics due to Asia’s influence many years ago, or the requirement of high minimum quantities, didn’t prevent Robin Grey from assuming shape. Somewhat magically, different people started to add new ingredients to a melting pot. Nearly a year after its start, the heart of Robin Grey is beating in the hands and minds of creative ladies in Hout Bay. Meet the makers below:
In collaboration with
With some hard earned savings and tiresome months of working 2 jobs, us at Robin Grey have come this far to make what we could happen. Our coats are marketed at 2x the cost price (at a special price for Kickstarter). With the generated profits, we will invest this into rent for our studio space, trade in our domestic machine and iron for industrial ones, provide our seamstress with a stable full time salary, grow our team where needed and put it towards training programmes to further uplift the skills of those who work with and around us :)
Risks and challenges
We truly hope that you will be satisfied with your coat, and regret that as a start-up, we won’t be able to cover shipping costs if you wish to return your coat for some reason.
The sticker and post-card will be sent by normal post, which should take 2 weeks to arrive, whereas all other items will be couriered and accompanied by a tracking number.
Due to the nature of the felt being hand-made, it will be a bit fluffy and fuzzy at first. This fluffiness does go away over time. We have lined and felted a backing onto the coats to ensure the fuzziness doesn’t transfer onto your clothing!
Due to external influences such as weather conditions for wool processing and felt production, and importing of woven fabric (where South Africa tends to be a bit delayed in receiving imports), production can take longer than expected. This is why we want to be safe in saying the coats will be delivered in January/February latest. They will however be sent out as they are complete, which could start from December. We realise this is the end of your winter season, but the coats are to be seen as an investment item in your wardrobe :)
Coat rewards costs are excluding shipping, but shipping has been worked out depending on destination/country zone and package weight, which is 1kg. Unfortunately shipping out of South Africa is quite expensive for some countries.
Please be vigilant in answering the survey you will receive to determine size etc. as soon as possible in order to not delay production and the receiving of your coats on time!
