Frequently Asked Questions
We can still add more rewards. We've added five new ones since the launch, in response to your excellent suggestions.
Please ask for what you want. Chances are, someone else wants it too.Last updated:
We conservatively looked up the international shipping rates to hand-mail each physical item ourselves from the local post office - because we know we can do that.
For our Canadian supporters, lucky you, our publisher is also Canadian. Please support our Kickstarter by selecting any digital or personalized items you want. Then go order the physical book from the publisher, or a local bookstore.
We may have a few Canadian events this year, Customs willing, so you may be able to pick up a book in person that way too.
For UK, EU, Australia, and New Zealand, and points nearby: Permanent Press in the UK has confirmed they will publish the book in your regions. This could change your options considerably. They hope to have some cost figures for us before the campaign ends. It looks like the book will be released in the UK September 1, and retail for L' 29.95 (that's supposed to be pounds, keyboard limitations). Though they say that they may have a Kickstarter option to deliver a little earlier. You can choose an all-digital reward, and stay tuned for updates.
For our colleagues in other countries: We are happy to look up your shipping cost and create a custom reward for international orders. Please send us a message with your country name and a postal code if used.
Unfortunately, shipping from the US in small quantities is expensive. After June 1, the book will be carried on Amazon, which may offer cheaper shipping options.
Please contact us if you are interested in ordering a bulk or wholesale package you can re-sell to reduce shipping costs per book. Or sign up as a booster, promote this project, and earn some money back. https://rocket-mass-book.kickbooster.meLast updated:
Thanks for wanting to support us that way. You should be able to choose any reward level up to the amount you pledged.
If you have a specific request like getting an eBook instead of a paper book with one of the higher pledge levels, please send us a message. It's probably easier for us to create a new, tailored reward for you right now, rather than try to customize what you get after the Kickstarter closes. (We will hopefully be delivering a lot of things to large lists of people, with some automated tools to help us get things out on time).Last updated:
Crowdfunding has unfortunately become saturated with "marketers" who think cold calls and spam are valuable marketing strategies. We have received too many unsolicited offers of help to be excited about researching them all, especially if they involve giving an eager stranger our financial information.
The volume of unwanted marketing spam makes it easy to miss genuine offers from friends or fellow Kickstarter creators, who have relevant and reasonable cross-promotion ideas.
At this time, we are using the Kickbooster program (10% referral bonus), on a trusted friend's recommendation. Marketing companies are welcome to sign up and try their hand at earning referrals, same as everyone else.
So far, this is working exactly as we hoped: most of the referrals are from people who are naturally and deeply connected with this kind of work. Professional and DIY builders, workshop leaders, eco-education self-publishers, small farmers who have a blog or mailing list. People who have put the time in, and built their own mailing lists on the strength of their own work and commitment, know who is likely to want this information. These folks are doing way better than even Kickbooster itself, and they are supposed to be one of the better crowd-funding marketers.
I like the idea that my marketing dollars might be funding your rocket stove project, or library, or spring seed collection, or a fancy new plastering trowel, instead of spam-bot development.Last updated:
For us to discuss, understand, and comment accurately on your situation might take a couple of hours. But let's cover a few things here:
- Can I install it over a suspended wood floor? It's been done (one of the six plans in the DigiData package shows a project that was built with raised air channels over a wood floor, shored up from the crawl space).
But it is not our favorite option, not as durable, and probably will not meet local building regulations. They usually require non-combustible supports/foundations, which is our preference too. The reasons why are discussed in the book.
- What if my house is really small, or portable, or special (like a boat, or treehouse)? There's a good chance that your special little house, if well-insulated, will not need a lot of heat. A small cooking stove might do it. If we reach our stretch goal # 1, every backer will receive some Teeny Tiny Mass Heater designs to play with.
- Can I build it without the barrel, or cover the barrel? Yes, but if cost, comfort, and efficiency are your primary goals, you may not want to. A range of options are discussed in the book, and there's a shorter discussion on this blog post: http://ernieanderica.blogspot.com/2016/03/overnight-heat-storage-and-decorated.html
If you have something else that needs discussing, and you think it's really a quick answer (not just a quick question, savvy?), you might sign up for the Autographed Access reward level which includes 1 hour of consultation time. (If a rocket mass heater is not the best answer, we'll recommend a different option, and put you in touch with any regional resources for reliable help.)
We normally offer private, custom "project outline consultation" for a base rate of $300, which covers the 2 to 5 hours it normally takes to discuss all aspects of your situation and goals, and suggest a basic design layout/your best options.
For free, try posting your question/situation on the online forums at www.permies.com or donkey32.proboards.com to get a range of answers (some expert and some novice-level), and take your pick.Last updated:
It's a smaller, lighter, more compact wood-fired heater, that still gives some of the clean-burn and heat-storage functions that people love about our big bench heaters. We have at least 3 possible plans that could be released as part of this offer, you can explore and up-vote your favorites here (copy and paste the link): http://www.permies.com/t/55001/Last updated:
What a great idea. If it's a special birthday gift or retirement present or something, we'd be delighted to inscribe it for them. I would be willing to gift-wrap by arrangement, if you throw in a few extra bucks at checkout.
When we collect your pledges, we'll ask for shipping data and other details. Choose the address where you want the book to arrive, and please remind us if there are any special messages regarding this item.
Send me a message with the correct name, and any details about the occasion or person that you'd want us to mention. "For Estelle, on the happy occasion of her 125th birthday. Warmly Yours," etc.
The estimated delivery date is late June to mid-July 2016. While we may be able to ship out some books during our June book-release tour, and you could certainly pick it up if you're planning to see us in Oregon or Washington, we may have to wait to send the bulk of them until we're back home for reasons of simple logistics.
Since we can't guarantee precise birthday timing, maybe you'll want to send them a card (print one of the images from our Easter update, if you like) and say "Your gift is coming... it's a surprise!"Last updated:
Kickstarter's terms don't allow us to offer big wholesale lots or sets, but do allow us to make special arrangements with individual backers.
I'll offer you the early bird price ($30 per book) on multiple-book orders. To pre-order 2 to 5 books, select "The Book" as your reward, and put a higher pledge amount:
2 books = $60 plus $6 for shipping within the USA
3 books = $90 plus $7 shipping " " "
4 books = $120 plus $8 shipping " " "
5 books = $150 plus $10 " " "
If you're outside the USA, send me a message and I'll figure the shipping costs.
For example we just calculated shipping for Japan,
1 book = $35 shipping
4 books = $65 shipping
You'll still get access to the "Fire Starter" rewards, but just one copy / video access link.
For orders of more than 5 books, our publishers' wholesale prices may be a better option.Last updated:
Does this book have measurements, or is it like all other books of theory and photos? Can I take this book and build a rocket heater, without all the experimenting on what size works best?
Absolutely. That's how it's designed.
Chapter 4 gives brick-by-brick instructions for our most popular 8" J-style firebox, with clearances, thicknesses, and sample bench dimensions. We give 1- or 2-page layouts at the end of that chapter for other J-style dimensions: metric-labeled layouts, and two ways to lay up a 6" firebox (for two different sizes of bricks).
Chapter 3 shows scale drawings, with house floor plans, for our example benches. We also give our rule of thumb for calculating your own bench dimensions in Chapter 6, in case you need a different layout for your space.
Peter kindly allowed us to include his batch-box firebox dimension tables, in inches and metric, those appear in Appendix 3.
If you are serious about building a heater, and don't want to mess around, you will appreciate this book.Last updated:
I've seen other Kickstarter creators do this by having people add a specified amount beyond the pledge level. We could add the eBook to orders that don't include it, for an extra $21.
Adding the physical book is harder, because we need to figure shipping. I would suggest choosing a level that already includes the printed book, with a shipping calculation, and add the eBook.
To do this for those interested, everyone who is getting the paper book will get an extra question on their backer survey, saying "Any special notes about this order?" (most people would just answer "no").
Please indicate clearly what the extra money is for, since it's also common for people to throw in a little extra just to support the creator's work.Last updated:
