About

Whether throwing fastballs at Vatican assassins, shaving their heads for the cameras, or losing their cool with show contestants and crew members, when celebrities have public meltdowns the world pays attention. CELEBRITY: THE MELTDOWN MONOLOGUES is a one-hour comedy/theater piece which will be produced as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, August 2011.

Each "meltdown monologue" (they'll rotate through the program from night to night, presented by a cast filled with Edinburgh's most dynamic actors and comedians) will be presented verbatim, with added humorous and theatrical twists that bring new meaning to the free-association, infuriated diatribes that have been auto-tuned, uploaded, Facebooked, Tweeted and YouTubed around the world.

Written in New York City by Rachel Lynn Brody and produced in Edinburgh by Lighting Motif, CELEBRITY: THE MELTDOWN MONOLOGUES will feature an Edinburgh-based cast and crew - and maybe even a few special guest stars!

Where the money goes:

  • Venue hire/rental
  • Producer in Edinburgh
  • Production costs
  • Creative Team in Edinburgh
  • PR costs (flyers, posters, marketing)
  • Registration and advertising in the official Edinburgh Fringe program
  • Other incidental costs incurred throughout production.
  • Maintaining our show blog and other online components to the show, where we'll open up new dialog about mental health, pressure and privacy in the digital age.

The Thesis: Privacy, Society & Mental Health in the Digital Age

Talking about celebrities allows us to talk about ourselves, and "Celebrity: The Meltdown Monologues" opens a new space for discussion of mental health and boundaries of privacy in the digital age. Our show blog will examine some of these issues as we mine the rich material provided by our subjects: celebrities themselves.

What role do they play in today's world? Do they satisfy our innate human need for heroes? Can anyone have a reasonable expectation of privacy in today's world? Or, in an age where any event has the potential to suffocate those involved in global attention - are celebrity meltdowns the "canary in the coal mine" warning that the rest of the world should heed? The unexamined life may not be worth living, but are celebs definitive proof that the “hyper-examined life” can be harmful to your health?

This project acknowledges and supports the crucial role that rigorous research and development plays in the creative process. By financing the Edinburgh world premiere, backers create a space where the creative team can use the process of production to open up wider discussion about privacy, society, mental health and more in the digital age - all while creating an exciting and engaging piece of theater!
