What is Grimm?!

Grimm is a card-based game based on the Grimm Brothers Fairy Tales that is fully strategy-driven.  There are two types of cards, prize cards (we are calling them Held Geld—a tip to the Germanic Grimms) and bidding cards (no clever name here).

It can be played with two (2) to four (4) players, and, when I say it is for two players and four players, I mean it. It scales beautifully.

Based on the artwork of Arthur Rackham and hand-drawn icons from the game designer

The game will be delivered on S33 superior smooth card stock with a black core in a beautifully designed rigid box.

Gameplay

  • Four rows of Held Geld (prize) cards are played face down with the last row of seven cards face up.
  • All players play one bidding card simultaneously face down (with the exception of the Cat & Mouse card—more on that later) for the first shown Held Geld card and then when flip the bidding cards to see who wins. Highest card wins, and the play continues for the remaining six (6) Held Geld and six (6) bidding cards.
  • The round ends, bidding cards are returned to each player and three (3) more rounds are played.
  • If two players tie when bidding on a Held Geld, that card is moved directly up to the next row and that round there are two cards that can be bid for in that slot.
  • Each Held Geld card has certain points (and powers). The player with the most points wins—and the winner has to clean up the game.
Held Geld cards set up for bidding.

But that's not all!

Both the Held Geld cards and bidding cards have powers and combinations that prove to provide endless strategy. And all of these attributes are fully couched in Grimms Fairy Tales.

Bidding Cards valued 0 – 7.

BIDDING CARDS

These cards are hand-drawn silhouettes representing minor characters in the Grimms Fairy Tales. Here are the ones with special rules:

  •  0/8 Dove—usually acts a zero (0), the lowest bidding card, but when a step-sister card is played—it becomes an eight (8), the highest card.

"When the wedding with the King’s son had to be celebrated, the two steps sisters came to share in Cinderella's good fortune, but when the betrothed couple went to church, the doves pecked out the eye of each of them. And thus, for their wickedness and falsehood, they were punished with blindness as long as they lived."

  •  1 Goose—when three or four players are playing, if two (2) goose cards are played, the fox card becomes worth zero (0).

"The fox once came to a meadow to eat the fine fat geese. One of them took heart and said, 'allow us one more prayer, that we may not die in our sins.' 'That is a reasonable and pious request; pray away, I will wait till you are done,' said the fox. Then the first began a good long prayer, forever saying, 'Ga! Ga!' and before she could end, the second began also, and so on. At present they are still praying without stopping."

  •  3 Cat & Mouse—can only be used once per game (rather than once per round as the others). This card is bid face up and then the Cat & Mouse bidder(s) bids one more card face down before the other bidding cards are turned face up.

"A certain cat had made the acquaintance of a mouse and had said so much to her about the great love and friendship she felt for her, that at length the mouse agreed that they should live and keep house together."

Various Held Geld (prize) Cards

HELD GELD CARDS

These cards are based on the artwork of Arthur Rackham representing significant characters and themes in the Grimms Fairy Tales. Here are their special rules:

  •  Princess & Prince cards—worth nothing (0) alone and with its partner it is worth twelve (12) for each card.
  •  Angel Mother—has the ability to turn the maiden card into a princess. The Maiden has a value of nine (9) on her own.
  •  Witch—worth minus thirteen (-13) alone and plus thirteen (+13) if combined with both Hansel and Gretel.
  •  Gold cards—are worth one (1) on their own and are worth two (2) when collected with the Dragon. Rumpelstiltskin can also turn any card into a Gold card.
  •  Dwarf cards—the value of the Dwarf cards increases exponentially when the player collects more Dwarf cards. One card is worth one (1) point to the player, two cards are worth four (4) points to the player, up to seven cards are worth forty-nine (49) points to the player.

This project is all but finished. We just need to finalize some artwork and send it to the publishers. All we need now is your support. The moment we hit $7,500, I will start production with the publisher and get the first order on their way so they can deliver before the year-end holidays.

In our rewards, we are focused on the US for delivery before the holidays. All backers will be listed as a Founding Backer on the Park and Parade website. In addition to buying the game, we have a limited number of spots for individuals to buy overstock games after the launch at the Kickstarter price, and four spots for individuals to include themselves or a friend or loved one on the prince and princess cards.

Why only $7,500?

This is what we need to cover our costs to launch this game. We know this is our first game and want to minimize the costs so that we can prove our concept with the world. Our overriding passion is building something that will be cherished.

Thank you for your support!

Background

Introductions—I am Russell Fisher, a  father, husband, and teacher (at a University here in Utah). My brother Ben and I share a few things in common. We both have three wicked smart kids, each of us has a wife with inestimable grace and immeasurable intelligence, and we love tabletop games that are simple to explain and play but are strongly driven by strategy and clever themes.

So, we have worked together to start designing exactly that—games that can be explained quickly and have infinite playability.

Grimm is our first gift to all of mankind!

(Wife: that isn't a little over the top? Me: maybe, but it's a fun game. Wife: it's not like you cured Western obesity or Norovirus or something. Me: you don't know! Maybe this is exactly what the world needs right now.)

We have been working on this for 15 months and are pumped to meld together the beautiful themes of the Grimm Brothers, the artwork of Arthur Rackham, and gameplay influenced by the game-theory concept developed in Princeton in the 1930s.

Book cover and artwork are within the public domain in the United States because they were published or registered with the U.S. Copyright Office before 1 Jan 1924. The Princeton University logo is used within fair use to identify the organization and as a commentary on the background of the project and not meant as an endorsement by or any other connection to the University.

Risks and challenges

I have set up the rewards so that we can get the orders to the United States backers by the holidays—which means I will be ordering the first printing as soon as we hit the $7,500. This will be our priority and then we can hit the international orders and anyone else that comes "late to the feast".

Thank you for your support!
