Photography exhibit from the "Moment of Victory" at the Minnesotans United For All Families election results party, Nov 6, 2012
Before the last election, thirty states had passed amendments that limited marriage to between only a man and woman, effectively restricting the rights of LGBTQ people. On November 6th, 2012, Minnesota became the first state to defeat such an amendment, keeping discrimination out of our state constitution.
My name is Rebecca and this is part of my story, and part of your story.
My kickstarter will raise money to print and frame an exhibit of the photos that I took at the Minnesotans United For All Families election results party. The exhibit will be up at the Blue Ox Coffee Company in South Minneapolis in February. Help me preserve and share an important chapter in Minnesota history by making a donation and sharing this kickstarter with your friends!
More than 27,000 volunteers made up the largest grass-roots organization in state history, Minnesotans United for All Families (MN United), the main coalition behind this historic win. As one of these volunteers, I recruited and trained people to conduct conversations about love, equality and marriage, in doing so, fighting homophobia by sharing our personal stories.
I was a volunteer for this remarkable coalition for 4 months. I am a photographer by trade so I was honored when MN United asked me to photograph the election results party. I had the privilege of being the only professional photographer in staff room when Richard Carlbom, the campaign manager for MN United, announced to the staff that we had won.
I want to share those photos with the community because a big focus of the campaign was that even if we won, which we did, that wasn’t the end of our work. We have a long way to go before all people have the right to marry, equal access to health care, safe schools and enjoy other basic rights.
My hope is that this exhibit will be another way of processing that we made history together. While keeping the momentum going, we must remind each other how much work it took to get to this point and how much we have left to do.
I want this exhibit and reception to be another reason to come together and celebrate our victories, our community and our history.
The images will be displayed at Blue Ox Coffee Company on 3740 Chicago Ave S Minneapolis MN.
A reception will be held in February and you are all invited!
Below is the poster design that is one of the rewards for backers who donate $25 or more. To view the prints available for rewards for donating $50 or more visit my flicker page.
For donation of $500 or more, you and a guest will get to have dinner with Rebecca Jean Lawrence and Richard Carlbom, MN United Campaign Manager, at a restaurant of your choosing!
Where will the funds go?
Funds from this Kickstarter will go to the printing and framing costs of this exhibit, reward costs and food for the reception. I would like to display 50 images from election night.
Each 11 by 14 inch print cost $7 and frames are $34 plus tax and shipping.
So your donation of $50 or more = one 11 by 14 finished print on the wall!
Stretch Goal = $5,000
If my first goal is exceeded, the extra funds will go towards having larger prints and frames. 8 by 10 inch prints are pretty small, smaller than a standard sheet of paper. Wouldn't it be better to see Senator Scott Dibble in mid air in a 20 by 24 inch print? Donate big, get bigger pictures.
If my stretch goal of $5,000 is reached, each backer will receive a postcard similar to the poster design.
Thank you for contributing to this kickstarter, for spreading the word about this project and working with me for equality. I look forward to meeting you at the reception (details will be released once this project is funded).
Special Thanks to Jeremy Keller for directing, editing & upgrading me, Keane Amdahl for videography & equipment and Dameun Strange for the perfect subtly epic song. They made this kickstarter video possible, this is the dream team people.
Thanks to Blue Ox for offering the space to show my photos and for caffeinating me regularly during the campaign.
Thanks to my family for their unending support that makes the work I do possible. Particularly Sam, Ben and Mona for helping me edit this project.
Thanks to Minnesotans for Voting No Twice on Nov 6, 2012.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
My main challenges will be:
1. Getting image from file to wall in a timely manner
2. Promoting the exhibit reception
3. Distributing the rewards
If you are in the Twin Cities and would like to help with this project, please contact me!
1. I will be ordering the prints already framed from my zenfolio site so that the images arrive ready to hang on the wall. I will be gathering a team of helpers to hang the images when they arrive. I have experience hanging shows as the gallery coordinator at the Coffee Grounds so I will put those skills to work for this project.
2. To keep the reward distribution simple, I plan to have most awards available by the gallery reception date so backers can pick up their rewards. This will limit the amount of shipping time and costs.
I am keeping the reward options simple by letting backers choose from 4 prints and have one poster option.
3. To spread the word about this project I will use all the things; social media, word of mouth, emails. I will need your help to make this successful!
Can you commit to sharing this project and your story with 10 people? Can you go a step further and ensure that at least 6 of those people donate and/or attend the reception with you? Even if you are not able to make a monetary donation your help is vital to making this kickstarter successful, so thank you for donating your time to spreading the word about this project.
