Game Play Video of the Standard Edition: Please enjoy the video depicting an attempted double envelopment, and note the multi-move Move that includes the Base Move, Reinforcement & Retreat Move, Combat, Retreat Move, Charge Move, Combat, Retreat Move, and Bayonet Move. See how the Line-of-Sight Rule affects combat (Confederate artillery in defilade is shielded from Federal artillery). Also note how the brigade commanders are turned to reflect casualties and reinforcements. For visual purposes, the Odds Table, Combat Results Table, and Die are used instead of the  IGA (smartphone/computer Interactive Game App) to resolve combat.

                                                 SYNOPSIS

                    TIDES of WAR: GETTYSBURG, 150th Anniversary

General officer endorsed ~ Oversized board game ~ App-calculated combat results (patent pending) ~ Rotating casualty-counting collectible miniatures (patent pending) ~ Gettysburg tour and tournament

Professional officers, combat veterans, Civil War historians, game designers, graphics designers, software experts, and avid board gamers have come together to develop a breakthrough, militarily realistic, collectible, patent-pending, user-friendly war game designed to meet the demands of war gamers and military professionals alike. The game comes in our Collector's Edition, complete with real-life made-in-America pewter miniatures, magnetized pins, and an oversized metal-and-wood game board. It is also available in the Standard Edition.

Our revolutionary smartphone/computer board-game app (patent pending) and our copyrighted software algorithm combine to dramatically increase game speed (see Interactive Game App section below).

Combining miniature war gaming with board war gaming, we created pewter miniatures of the 145 individual true-to-life collectible army, corps division, and brigade commanders and 27 artillery units. Brigade commanders and artillery units are mounted on rectangular counters. Unlike games that eliminate entire units with the role of a die or adjust values with a fragile wheel, each miniature is rotated after participating in combat to reflect changing combat strength (patent pending).

Endorsed by Stanford PhD and West Point graduate Maj. Gen. Alan Salisbury, USA (Ret.): "The app and rotating miniatures bring unparalleled military realism to this superb game."

Use of Funds:  To commence full production of the Collector's and Standard Edition games.

                                    GAME DESCRIPTION

General:

TIDES of WAR: GETTYSBURG© allows you to revisit and rewrite history with Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia or MG George G. Meade’s Federal Army of the Potomac. Will the Confederates take advantage of their initial numerical superiority on the first day of the battle? Will Lee heed LTG Longstreet's advice on the second day and maneuver to cut the Federals off from Washington, D.C.? Will Meade attempt to hold Culp's Hill, Cemetery Hill, Cemetery Ridge, and Little Round Top until the balance of his army comes up and gives him the edge? Tactics, calculated risks, and timing focus the mind and leave little room for error in this the largest battle of the Civil War.

  • Oversized Game Board (Collector's Edition is a raised metal with wood trim)
  • (IGA) Interactive Game App (patent pending)
  • Reinforcement/Supply Cards
  • Morale Cards

   The following items are included for players choosing to forego use of the IGA:

  • 2 die (Collector's Edition embossed with HIGH TIDES: GETTYSBURG©, game logo)
  • Odds Calculator
  • Combat Results Table

Pieces: Miniature HQ and mounted brigade units

Each brigade or artillery unit is listed with its Combat Factor. Army, corps and division HQ commanders do not have Combat Factors, but enhance the Combat Factor of any brigade with which they share a hexagon.

Movement factors are not listed. Infantry have a Movement Factor of 2. Cavalry, artillery and Army, Corps, and Division HQs have Movement Factors of 4.

Each infantry and cavalry unit is a rectangle mounted with a Standard Game generic plastic miniature or a Collector's Edition life-like pewter miniature of its commander. Artillery units are mounted with cannons. HQs are stand-alone miniatures not mounted on rectangle bases.

Game Board: The board is an oversized, highly detailed map of the battlefield with an overlay of interlocking hexagons. The Standard Game Board is cardboard. The Collector’s Game Board is raised metal and wood-trimmed.

The Units (patent pending): TIDES of WAR: GETTYSBURG©, combines the finest elements of miniature and board war gaming with its patent-pending Rotating Game Unit Counter. Each infantry and cavalry unit consists of a generic plastic commander in the Standard Game or each true-to-life pewter commander in the Collector’s Edition. They are mounted on a cardboard rectangle in the Standard Game or a domino-like block in the Collector’s Edition. Hand painting is offered as Collector’s Edition option. Each unit’s Combat Factor is printed on the unit rectangle (a brigade of 2,100 men begins with a Combat Factor of 7). Decreasing Combat Factor numbers are printed in a circle around the base of the brigade commander. The brigade commander is rotated to point to ever lower Combat Factors as casualties are taken. Army, corps, and division commanders do not have combat factors, but do enhance the combat factor of any brigade with which they share a hexagon. (See unit list below)

Cards: Prior to each turn two cards are drawn by the attacker. One is a Supply and Reinforcement Card. The other is a Morale Card. These cards instruct the attacker to increase or decrease specific units’ Combat Factors. Each card includes details about the brigade commander and the regimental composition of the brigade, a special feature that is of particular interest to both history buffs and soldiers’ descendants.

                                                            PLAY

Movement: Infantry may move up to two hexagons per turn. Cavalry and artillery may move four.

Merge: The unique Rotating Game Unit Counter allows units to merge. This allows depleted units to join together as one full-strength unit.

Combat: Infantry and cavalry combat zones extend two spaces. Artillery combat zones extend four spaces. At the end of the movement phase of a turn, all units within an opponent’s combat zone must engage in battle. Artillery that is three to four spaces from the opponent have the option of engaging. Combat is resolved by using the ratio (as calculated by the Interactive Game App or with the manual Gettysburg Odds Calculator) of attack Combat Factors to defense Combat Factors as adjusted by terrain and angle of attack (see example). Results are determined either by the Interactive Game App (patent pending) or a dice roll in conjunction with the Combat Results Table. In the same turn, the attacker may, after calculating casualties, use the App or dice a second time. Both the attacker and defender have the option of retreating one space after each roll.

Combat Example:

Base Move: von Gilsa’s 1,136-man Federal Brigade (Combat Factor of 4)  on high-ground (Barlow’s Knoll), and is attacked (Base Move) frontally by Gordon’s 1,508-man Confederate Brigade (Combat Factor of 5) two hexes away and perpendicularly against its flank (enfilading) by Avery’s 1,244-man Confederate Brigade (Combat Factor of 4) two hexes away. In the Reinforcement and Retreat Move he is reinforced with 1 Combat Factor from a nearby unit.

(The following is computed by the IGA or may be performed manually)
Compute: Avery’s Combat Factor triples to 12 because he is enfilading. The total Confederate Combat Factors as adjusted are 5 + 12 = 17. von Gilsa’s reinforced Combat Factor doubles to 10 because his brigade is on high-ground.   Therefore, the ratio is 17/10. The Gettysburg Odds Calculator converts this to a rounded-off 1.5/1 (all ratios are converted to the nearest .5).
Dice: The dice roll is a 2 and the Combat Results Table provides the following: Defender’s losses are 0 Combat Factor. Attacker’s loss is 1 Combat Factor. Therefore, the attacker chooses to have Gordon lose 1 Combat Factor.
Casualties: The brigade commanders are rotated on their units to reflect their reduced Combat Factors as follows: von Gilsa subtracts remains at 4 doubled to 8 on the high ground. Avery remains at 4 (tripled to 12 for enfilading) and Gordon is reduced to 4.
Charge Move and Roll: The Federal commander orders von Gilsa to remain and face the Charge Move. Confederates charge, and the new ratio is Gordon’s 4 + Avery’s 12 = 16 to von Gilsa’s 5 x2 = 10 for a ratio of 16/8 or 2/1. The dice are rolled again, and come up 5. This time Confederates lose none and von Gilsa loses 1 Combat Factor. Once again, Defender is doubled on the high ground and therefore loses .5 combat Factor rounded to 1. His remaining 4 Combat Factors retreat one space. The Confederate units take his place on the high ground in the Bayonet Move.

Note: After the Base Move attack, Gordon’s miniature is turned to 4 and von Gilsa’s remains at 5 (4+1 reinforcement), and the units are set for the Charge Move. The black hex indicates high-ground (Barlow’s Knoll).

                                              ADDENDUMS

                        Addendum A: Interactive Game App (IGA)

Patent Abstract

A board game, such as a military board game, overlays a playing area, such as a map, with hexagons, squares, intermittent circles, or other forms of a grid. The hexagons, etc., are numbered and each point of the hexagon, etc., is designated with a letter or symbol. In the case of a circle, or any form lacking definable points, letters or symbols are evenly placed clockwise inside the form. For the purposes herein a hexagon with numbers and letters will be described, but the concepts apply to all forms. The Interactive Game App (IGA) contains in memory all of the hexagons by number and lettered points and also records if the hexagon covers a game-affecting space such as a hill, forest, river, town, etc. Game players move their game pieces (units) to engage (attack) opponents’ units. When the player’s move has been completed and the outcome of an engagement (combat) is to be determined, the player is prompted to enter the following data into the Interactive Game App (IGA):

a.  Each unit’s strength (Combat Factor);

b.  Each unit’s type (if it is relevant, such as artillery that has a longer range than other units);

c.  Each attacking and defending unit’s hexagon number;

d.  Each attacking and defending unit’s orientation by using two hexagon letters to define the left and right front side of each unit, thereby establishing the unit’s direction;

e.  A typical entry: “6  arty  17CD” (represents the Combat Factor of “6”, unit type “arty” for artillery, unit grid location “17”, and unit orientation “CD”).

When all of the engaging units have been entered into the IGA, the player presses “Enter” and the IGA calculates the odds (attacker/defender), taking into account each unit’s orientation and game-affecting space. The Odds Table in Figures 2 and 3, which are used to manually calculate odds to the nearest .5 in a dice-driven game, is incorporated into the IGA’s memory, although different criteria may be employed such as odds to the nearest 1.0 or .25. The IGA may be programmed differently for a given game or game scenario. The following example is for a military board game:

       Orientation may affect play as follows:

a.  Frontal attack (Combat Factor is unaltered)

b.  Rear attack (typically doubles the Combat Factor)

c.  Partial enfilade (typically doubles the Combat Factor)

d.  Enfilade (typically triples the Combat Factor)

Game-affecting spaces may affect play as follows:

a.  High ground (typically doubles the Combat Factor)

c.  Forest, walls, entrenchments, and buildings (typically double the Combat Factor)

The odds having been instantly calculated, the IGA’s random algorithm determines the outcomes.

                        Addendum B: Rotating Game Unit Miniature

Patent Abstract

A Miniature game piece (soldier, cannon, or other handle-like object, etc. – hereafter, “Miniature”) is placed on top of a Unit Counter Base (in the form of a square, rectangle, circle, etc.) that may be flat or raised, domino-like. The miniature is attached to the Base with a pin (magnetic when employed with metal game boards) running up through the the unit counter and into the Miniature. Descending Combat Factor (the number equaling the combat strength of the Unit) numbers circle the Miniature on the Base. As the Unit is determined to suffer losses, the Miniature is turned to face lower numbers. As that Unit receives reinforcements or is otherwise enhanced (supplies, rest, etc.) the Miniature is moved to face a higher number (i.e., a Unit Counter with a Combat Factor of 7 that suffers Combat Factor casualties of 6 will compel a player to turn the Miniature from 7 down to 5.)

                                                     Project Details
TIDES of WAR: GETTYSBURG©, is being developed by Rising Tides Entertainment, Inc., in the following locations: Programming in the outskirts of Washington, D.C., and Burbank, California. Business management in Portland, Oregon. Historical and topographical input at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Rising Tides Entertainment, Inc., is, as its name implies, dedicated to raising the level of war gaming by merging the talents and expertise of military professionals, military historians, and state-of- the-art programmers to create the most realistic, user-friendly war games available.

Rising Tides games emulate the battlefield, compelling players to employ the Principles of War (West Point cadets use the acronym MOSS MOUSE) of which the Objective is foremost:

Objective:
Direct every military operation towards a clearly defined, decisive, and attainable objective.
Mass:
Concentrate combat power at the decisive place and time. Economy of Force: Allocate minimum essential combat power to secondary efforts.
Surprise:
Strike the enemy at a time, at a place, or in a manner for which he is unprepared.
Security:
Never permit the enemy to acquire an unexpected advantage.
Offensive:
