About

Hi. My name is Jordyn Gatti and I'm the founder of Rise Mrkt.

Rise Mrkt is a radically sustainable online grocery store. We sell dry pantry goods shipped directly to your door packaged in our 100% compostable pouches.

100% compostable means there is ZERO plastic. Yes, totally plastic free packaging!

Our shipping materials will also be totally plastic free, made from recycled materials and compostable when possible. We also take care of the composting by sending you a pre-paid shipping label to simply ship the empty pouches to the closest composting facility after you've accumulated enough of them. But this is only the first half of what radically sustainable means to us, here is the rest. --

Sustainability HAS to be accessible. Creating accessibility for a sustainable future means three things to us. Price, availability and action

1. PRICE

"Sustainability" often means a higher price tag which can totally price people out of leading a more sustainable life style and it is absolutely important to us to make sure our pricing remains fair and accessible.

Take a look at some examples of our pricing and you'll find they either match or beat the price of these same products on places like Amazon and Thrive. We're able to do this by buying our items closer to the original source which eliminates the middlemen who increase the cost and waste of any product. Also, by shipping the items directly to your door we are eliminating the added cost of having a physical retail space.

2. AVAILABILITY

For us availability means "anyone who wants our products can get our products".

When we launch we are going to be shipping to EVERYWHERE in the U.S. including Alaska and Hawaii. We are also taking into account that not everyone has access to a reliable shipping address to receive packages or the fact that right now SNAP benefit cards can't be used for online grocery shopping.

From launch we are planning on pop-up or mobile grocery trucks from which we can service people in these situations. Additionally we would like to bring these pop-ups or mobile grocery trucks in areas where people are experiencing any kind of food insecurity beginning in our home city of New York City. Far to many Americans identify as food insecure and as an industry we simply need to do more to change this.

3. ACTION

For us creating action is about creating clear and easily executable steps towards sustainability that apply to everyone who buys our products. This begins with us handling the composting of our pouches.

When your pouch becomes empty we simply ask that you store it temporarily - since we are using all dry good there is no need to clean out your pouch or worry about mold growth - we will keep track of how many pouches you've ordered and when you reach the number that makes most sense to ship (based on cost and energy efficiency of the carrier) we will email you a pre-paid shipping label to our closest partner composting facility. All you have to do is take the biggest pouch, put all the other pouches inside and attach the pre-paid shipping label. From there you can hand it off to our partnered carrier at any of their drop off locations (likely USPS).

These are the exact same steps you would take to return a package from any major retailer or e-commerce platform. If you can return an Amazon package, you can compost :)

The mission

For me, the mission of this company is everything - radical sustainability. But really as this idea has developed and grown that word "sustainability" has become a lot more expansive. The best way I can describe it would be to call our approach "360° sustainability", meaning not just creating environmental sustainability but trying to help create a larger social sustainability as well. I've arrived at a place in both my personal and professional life where it feels irresponsible to create a food company that didn't try - in some meaningful and earnest way - to address the systemic issues and inequities created by our industrial food system. This feels increasingly the case as none of the legacy food companies have taken the lead on modernizing the food system and creating a sense of "360° sustainability", and in that way it feels like it's up to our entrepreneurs to get us there instead.

That fact mixed with some personal idealism, compassion and grit have driven me to bring this company to life and relentlessly pursue our promise to bring about the sustainable future we need in our food system.

Much appreciation to everyone who has taken the time to visit this page or donated to the campaign.

Please feel free to send any questions to jordyn@risemrkt.com I will get to them as quickly as possible!

More about our pouches and sources

Pouches:

  • Proudly made in the U.S.A
  • Will fully mineralize (break down) in a composting facility in less than 180 days
  • Made entirely from plant material (some of this material includes GMO corn and soybeans, we are working with our manufacture to find alternative raw materials, this is all brand new technology so please bear with us while we work to improve it. Our goal is to one day make our pouches from organic and non mono-cropped plant material. Thank you!)
  • Our pouches are backyard compostable as well, but they may take longer than 180 days to mineralize depending on environmental conditions like weather and temperature. If you do plan on composting our pouches in your own compost pile, we recommend cutting the pouches into small pieces to accelerate the process.

Sources:

  • We source all of our products from organic farms that are as committed to sustainability as we are. We source from U.S. farmers whenever possible but there are other factors to consider when sourcing sustainably other than just distance the goods have to travel.
  • On each item page we will provide information about where the food was grown, the history of the farm and the sustainable practices these famers have adopted
  • We are also working with farmers in the U.S. who are growing rare or heritage varieties of crops that have become endangered as a result of industrial or mono crop farming practices.
  • Additionally we will be working with famers who use crop rotational practices to create a market where they can sell the varietal crops they plant for the purpose of replenishing the soil's nutrients naturally. It's important to create a market for these products as that will incentivize more famers to participate in this sustainable practice.

Where will the money go?

  • The majority of the money captured will go to buying/creating inventory. At launch we are planning on offering around 50-100 dry pantry staples, however the more money we capture ultimately the more items we are able to offer.
  • We will need warehousing and equipment for packaging and shipping our items. Our goal is to eventually build our own facility that runs on renewable energy sources and produces little to no waste.
  • Lastly we will need to pay salaries and wages to all the amazing people on our team!

Risks and challenges

Well, the good news is this team has already launched a food company that is currently healthy and growing (thebettermrkt.com) so a lot of the would-be risks and challenges have already been turned into lessons learned through our other company. That said, every single project obviously comes with its own set of risks and challenges. One of our first challenges will be to maintain consistently low prices across all our products.

As we aim to scale Rise Mrkt to be able to service more people and offer more products it will be important to make sure that growth is controlled and sustainable. Unfortunately, a lot of start-ups can succumb to the fate of "growing too big, too fast" and this usually leads to a price increase as the company scrambles to stabilize it'self. For us, it's all about sustainable growth and making sure that we can expand as needed while maintaining our price and mission standards.

There will also be infrastructure challenges we will be facing as we seek to make composting more mainstream. Unfortunately composting is not a common practice in the U.S. and therefore we have gaps in our composting infrastructure. We have already begun working on how will can solve these problems in a more permanent way by creating our own facilities to fill in those service gaps. Ideally, we want to see the popularity of composting grown in this country and as it does we will need to make sure there is adequate infrastructure to fulfill that demand.
