Printers and Distributors
I've now found a small selection of affordable printers! This means that I will be able to fulfill all rewards with ease and have copies left over to sell privately or in bookstores.
The most exciting news is that I've liaised with the Book Depository to see how to get my book on their website. They've told me which distributors they stock from and I've already organised to work with them as soon as I have the funds. Lightning Source distributes to over 35,000 bookstores worldwide so all I need to do is finalise the tail end of the book process and sign up with them.
The Genesis of the Story
Originally, the idea for the Paradise Series popped into my head as a teenager back in high school. The characters all started talking to each other and creating their own story in my head. I didn't have time to write anything down, so the story continued to grow in my imagination.
Eventually, my English teacher assigned us a short story over the weekend. Well, five hours and twelve pages later, the beginning of Rilla was written and I was exhausted! I handed it in with an apology for the distinct lack of "short" in my short story.
A few days later, she handed back the assignment and took me aside for the conversation that would change and elevate the course of my writing development. She pointed out that my "short" story was in fact the beginning of a novel. I was stunned!
Pretty much since that day, I've been writing Rilla on and off under the name of Paradise because initially I had no idea that it was too big a story for just one book. In the past few years, I've rewritten it twice to make it as good as I possibly could. I've now finished writing it for the last time and have started book two (Illaria).
Rilla is a fantasy book about a place called Paradise, which is supposed to be a safe haven from the Outworld, but has become a prison for many of its people. A number of “Paradises” were created throughout the Outworld by the lintep, and all of them have become dangerous for non-conformists to live in because of their leaders.
The main character groups include humans, elves, karliki (dwarves), crystal dragons and lintep, who look human but have magic powers.
The story follows Rilla, Arishen, Tika and Plyke, four Paradisians, who are led by a loner through the Outworld. They are joined by an elf who, after a number of attacks, detours, magical mishaps and political disasters, attempts to take them to the lintep stronghold.
Well ... I won't tell you any more than that or I'll spoil the ending for you! Suffice to say that it ends on a cliffhanger and I'm already writing the next book.
Les Petersen has agreed to do the cover artwork! He is an award-winning illustrator/animator/art director who has done cover artwork for many famous authors, including Australia's own Jennifer Fallon. Check out his awesome portfolio at www.lespetersen.com.au/.
The artwork is already complete (see below) and will be used for the bookmark and poster rewards.
I'm raising funds to publish Rilla: Book one of the Paradise Series. This book is actually already completed. It's been a work in progress for a few years and now I'm ready to publish it and add it to libraries around the world.
The initial goal amount will be enough to pay for the artwork, purchase ISBNs, set up ebook accounts with places such as Amazon and Print on Demand with distributors. I will also be able to purchase the necessary software to create the maps I had roughly drawn during the writing process.
The rest of the goal amount will be used to process and send out the backer awards.
As the end date draws nearer, I'm rethinking the rewards. I can't thank my backers enough, but am just blown away by the $250 and $500 pledges! As such, I'm going to ensure backers from $150 upwards ALL receive a signed hardback copy of the book.

Carol Ballantine - At home on the couch

"A page-turner from start to finish. Once you enter the world Truglio has created, you won't want to leave."
"It's The Hunger Games meets Harry Potter's older sister."
“Those who love the Eragon: Inheritance Cycle series, and fantasy in general, will agree this an excellent novel by a debut author.”
Risks and challenges
As the book is already written and an illustrator has already been commissioned for the artwork (though not yet paid!), there are few risks involved in this project.
The main challenges are:
- sourcing affordable printing options (though Print on Demand makes this easier)
- marketing the book to the world (Kickstarter support will help this aspect along)
- (30 days)
