Steering Pete’s Course, Maritime Songs from the Seeger Songbag
A kickstarter project that comes from the heart and soul of two of Pete Seeger’s long time friends, Rick Nestler and Rik Palieri, known as The RIX.
Rick Nestler and I started singing with Pete Seeger in the late 1970s. Now, with Pete’s 100th Birthday on the horizon, we thought it was time to honor him with this special collection of maritime songs from traditional and original songs that Pete sang about rivers and oceans.
For this project, we picked some old favorites like The High Barbaree, Hudson Whalers, Blow the Man Down, The E-RI-E , Pay Me My Money Down, The Sinking Of The Reuben James and The River That Flows Both Ways.
We wanted to also feature some of Pete Seeger's own songs that are not as well known such as The Ballad Of The Sloop Clearwater, Don’t Ask What a River is For, The Song of The Last Whale, The Sloop Woody Guthrie and many more!
Altogether, 19 songs have been recorded and are now in the mixing process.
To give this project the right spirit, a few of Pete’s friends who have sailed, sung and recorded with him have been included such as Guy Davis, David Bernz, Sarah Underhill and Melissa Ortquist . The photographers Econo-smith are doing the cover and helping with a special booklet filled with the lyrics so you can join in and sing along with the recording.
Much of the hard work is already done.
However, in order to bring our dream to life, we need your help to finish the recording, mixing, mastering, pressing, design and artwork, distribution to radio DJs, reviewers, tour support and other promotional costs.
That is why we, The Rix, are asking you to help us meet our goal of $5,000 in 30 days.
Pete Seeger believed that it was participation that was going to help change the world. So we are asking you now to participate in this special project that will help honor his memory and continue his tradition.
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge will be attracting people to buy the CD. In todays changing music world CDs are being fazed out with more and more people opting to download their music. CD players are disappearing and are not available in many of the newer cars. We strongly believe that many of our fans and supporters as well as fans of Pete Seeger still prefer CDs and that is why we are planning to make a limited run of 1000. Our CD will feature photos, liners notes and the lyrics to all the songs so that our listeners can sing along with the recording. This kind of comprehensive packaging ads even more to the production cost, but will make it both more attractive and informative. We will also offer a choice of the download card for those who prefer that option.
Another challenge will be getting this special album to radio stations around the world. We have budgeted money to pay a professional to do the radio distribution. We have already invested several thousand dollars in recording costs and we are now in the process of licensing the songs written by Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. The licensing fees ad quite a bit more to the cost, but have to be paid.
The $5000 we are asking for is just covering some of our costs, but it will help us to deliver the best project that we can make. We are happy that many of our friends who are singers, photographers & graphic designers, share our vision and have already invested their time and energy to help us. We are very grateful for their support and also for our future Kickstarter backers. Together we all can keep spreading the message and music of our friend Pete Seeger.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
